But if you detect criticism, then perhaps there are indeed things to be critical of regarding my issues with irresponsible pet owners.
I just really want to know what Merry,Weber, Tyler and of course you see as reasonable solutions.
Is it still pet registration and mandatory spay and neuter?

Toto Too, that's a lot of criticism for four out of the seven directors. What exactly do the three that you praise think the solution is?
The remaining three primarily support forward thinking veterinarian recommendations as do I.

The three directors that Toto Too praised (Merry, Weber and Tyler) opposed the recommendations of the original task force that studied the animal issue for months. Merry and Weber refused to accept the task force's belief that registration was unfeasible. Merry didn't agree with the tethering recommendation and all three voted against accepting the cat recommendations.
Weber and Merry were the ones primarily responsible for the task force being set up and then when they didn' t like what they said they wouldn't approve their recommendations making the whole thing a waste of time for the good people on the task force.
I say shame on Directors Merry, Weber and Tyler for pushing personal preferences above the recommendations of a committee they helped appoint.

From what I have heard, they have reconsidered. I don't know, maybe it is hearsay.

I support preventive heatlh spay/neuter for dogs and cats,Trap-Neuter-Release of feral cats,spay/neuter of stray adoptable dogs. Professionally licensed and certified breeder's purebred/pedigree could be exempt from any required spay/neuter. Current vaccination status, microchip ID insertion, minimum standard of care and spay/neuter of "mutts" should be required of 21st Century pet owners. Affordable pet services should be available. There are many "Vets" who would gladly support such services. All that is needed is to coordinate the effort. That takes leadership.....coming soon to a site near you!

What is wrong with mandatory spay/neuter for non-pedigrees?

"Research consistently points out that one of the primary reasons people don't have their pets altered is because of cost. For low income pet owners, the cost of spay/neuter is cost prohibitive, and many are not aware of low cost spay/neuter options in their communities......
......by creating a law to MAKE them do what we want (vs providing services to help them do it), we make it even harder for people who are struggling to keep their animals in the first place to keep their pets.
That recipe will lead to failure -- and more dogs and cats seized from homes and thus, dead in the shelter.

$40 for spay/neuter is cheap enough to get it done. Who wouldn't do that for their pet's health at that price?

For less than 25 cents per day for the first year you can get your dog "fixed" and vaccinated with nails trimmed. That's only about a quarter per day. Isn't man's best friend worth it?

Gee Cheapskat that is less than the cost of a lottery ticket a week or a pack of cigarettes a month.

Are you saying that if the service to appropriately spay/neuter pets is available at an affordable price then an ordinance should be enforced to require the petowner to have the animal "fixed"? If so,than how should the police enforce the law? I guess that is the real issue?

just saying if there is a law that requires pet owners to comply, the law should be enforced! I don't make laws but think that we are a nation of laws and they should be enforced! hope I answered your question.

A law that does not exist in Fort Smith is mandatory spay/neuter. The disagreement comes as to whether it should be required or not for dogs and cats with some exemptions such as for professional breeders of show dogs, etc. For the average family "mutts" like mine it is healthier for them that she has been spayed and he has been neutered. They're not only healthier but more sociable and less agressive(stressed). Such is truly kindness to animals when they have a family, food, water, shelter and health care, etc.

So the right thing to do is to take advantage of affordable pet health services as recommended by Veterinarians.

For those who think they are in only for the money, think again. The Vet ain't gonna git rich on $40 for spay/neuter or another $40 for all required or recommended vaccinations (rabies, distemper, etc.)

Veterinarians are as smart as physicians. The Vets choice of profession oftentimes has less to do with money and more to do with compassion and professional satisfaction. No matter, our felines and canines deserve what 21st Century veterinarian medicine provides and conscienious pet owners deserve help affording that service to our animals.

I think the animal control laws we already have are adequate. Just enforce what we them. While I personally believe that spaying and neutering is best for most animals, I don't think we need or want the city to get in our business to the degree that the police are checking to see if Fido still has his manly appendages.
i would like to see more free rabies clinics and free microchips with coupons for reduced spay and neuter given out. More education, maybe a concentrated effort in the schools to teach kids how important it is to give their pets a good quality of life.
But mandatory spay/neuter and registration, no way.

Before teaching the kids, why don't the adults teach themselves the importance of necessary spay/neuter. To do otherwise is like "do as I say, not do as I do".

You were doing fine until you fell short with your short explanation,"no way!". Why do you feel, "no way" the authorities should be in a position to make sure that there is compliance. You cannot go halfway with fixing the problem. Everyone has to get onboard as if fighting an epidemic. That is what is has come to due to procrastinating. Time is running out.
