Does anyone here other than engineering firms and those that do "studies" make any money here? I have never been anywhere so "studied" in my own life. It is sort of like that money just goes up in smoke or down the crapper. If I were going to spend money here studying something...OK, that wouldn't be nice!

Well, considering the study in question is going to determine more or less where a bypass is going to go, I'd say it's of some importance.

We all have our idea of important. I think it is important that the State of Kansas serve the over 3,000 people with developmental disabilities that are on a waiting list because the State doesn't have funds. When I called KDOT about this study and asked why on earth this was important, they said "don't you have this tourist thing going on" - well, as you can imagine I was able to clear that up for them. In studying the corridor, it is my understanding that is just the stretch through Fort Scott and with the ideas of how to improve what is already there (I guess to handle all this traffic?) so I would guess that money that could be spent improving the streets within Fort Scott will be spent on the corridor to bring in all those "tourists" - you all got to get out and see what this country has to offer to tourists to help clear up some things. All that money will be spent with the hope that the projects will be funded. Look at the contributions that the city and county made to the aquatic center study - money gone - pipe dreams up in smoke. Cathy

I wouldn't say this is like the aquatic center, in that a bypass and realignment of the highway is pretty much a certainty, and one that is going to be a reality within a relatively short time frame. And the vast majority of the information culled by the feasibility study on the pool will still be relevant whenever a new pool is constructed.

Nick, Nick, Nick. All I can say and still be kind is "watch and learn". I was young once too - Kitty, bless her heart, in another post says that people in their 50's are still young but Kitty is young at heart. I always liked that movie "My Step Mother Is An Alien" because at the end in order to show the alien leader why she wanted to stay on earth, he was able to look back through time and see her memories of the things that had passed but since we can't do that, "watch and learn". If this City doesn't bankrupt itself, I will be surprised - you know they announce those emergency budget meetings and yet, to my great horror they just keep spending on things that don't appear to be a matter of life and death or benefit to majority of taxpayers??? What are they thinking or not? A few dollars here and few dollars there - that's how the youth inexperienced with cash management always end up broke. The City has potential but will it ever be realized with this kind of management - no chance. Cathy

Agree to disagree. Assuming things don't slink back into the same old same old, I'd be willing to bet within 5 years we will have some visible signs of improvement/growth in this town, and the population decreases will have slowed. 10 years from now, I think it will be in much better shape than it has been in ages, assuming fresh/progressive blood keeps in the COmmission. And that's coming from a pessimist.
5 years from now, somebody needs to resurrect this thread.

From your statement "fresh/progressive blood keeps in the commission" you seem to be implying that we have someone fresh/progressive right now? After this next election the voters will hopefully have a chance to get people into the commission seats that have no hidden agendas and buddy buddy relationships and will hopefully NOT be so out of touch with the voters.
