So, now we have an issue because the Amish aren't outgoing enough or outwardly friendly. You might be better off to read about the Amish online if you have questions about their faith. And when it comes to unfriendly and not making eye contact, someone would feel at home here for the most part! On attending the meeting and bringing up Amish children in the street, 18 wheeler almost hitting an Amish buggy in the dark, etc., and not to mention complaining about the horses being too thin or that they poop on the streets (we have worse things on the street that are more of a health hazard) these are subjects that should have been discussed with the sheriff, not the county commissioners so did they contact the sheriff and did he go out and talk with them? If he did not, shouldn't the complaint have been about the sheriff not doing his job? Seriously, if someone in town had an issue with kids in the street would they go to the county commissioners and want them to do something about it maybe other than post one of those "Children Playing" or words to that effect signs? So, the scenario looks like they went with an agenda of finding something that the county commission could harass them over and by golly, the outhouses, even though the county was guilty themselves, became the issue they could use. The Deadline often carries articles about the Amish and they are a people to be admired not harassed and criticized. Bourbon County should be glad to have attracted a few families that were not coming here for the welfare benefits! The Amish take care of their own and they don't expect the taxpayers to write them a check each month. I cannot, well, actually I can believe that the Amish are being treated this way here. You are either part of the solution or part of the problem so please let your opinion be known to the county commissioners. Many, many exceptions are made for others!

The Amish are sorta similar and sorta different from regular BB County folk. I read that the Amish seek to maintain separation from the non-Amish world kinda how Bourbon County seeks separation from mainstream USA. For example, members who do not conform to Amish social norms are excommunicated or shunned. Amish church members do not accept government assistance such as Social Security and do not perform any type of military service.
The Amish are different in a couple big ways: their rejection of Hochmut (pride, arrogance, haughtiness); the high value they place on Demut (humility) and Gelassenheit (calmness, a reluctance to appear self-promoting, or to assert oneself). This avoidance of anything self-aggrandizing is the Amish’s motive for rejecting modern technology that they believe sparks competition for status goods & promotes personal vanity.

Most people don't have much choice as to their lifestyle? Our lifestyle is a direct result of the choices we make. I can't agree with that statement at all. It's only when you take responsibility for your actions that you get anywhere in life.
So, isn't sociology taught here? Or maybe Human Geography? Economics? I am guessing that you know very little about the working poor or poverty not to mention children born in these situations. Perhaps, your chance will come to learn first hand. I don't want to get off subject so keep in mind that the Amish have chosen their lifestyle and they had a choice to choose their community or another type. You can see by what is happening to the Amish here that other people can do a lot to destroy the lives of others and the way they choose to live.

You would have to define "Get anywhere in life" because we all have different values which is obvious from these attempted attacks on a peaceful religious group that mean no one any harm. I can tell that a lot of the problem lies in the ignorance to the Amish ways and let's face it, Bourbon County is less than welcoming to "outsiders" and especially that involve any kind of competition. Everyone knows that laws/statues/ordinances are ignored here all the time and it is a matter of picking and choosing and the individuals involved!

I have nothing against the Amish at all.I do have some observance of them. They are freindly when handing them money for goods. Those Amish carpenter boys are the first ones to pop a top on a beer after work. If they shun modern things they better get rid of those chain saws. They only have church once a month. They may not ask for welfare but we pay the medical bill when they have a baby. The EPA can fine Bourbon County for not complying to the laws on this subject. And they do have skinny looking horses.

So, were you an a member of the Amish? You start out by saying you have nothing against them but you are critical of, what, everything they do? And a beer after work is breaking what commandment? None that I know of. Are they of legal age? If so, they are not breaking the law unlike many, many others constantly arrested in town. Keep in mind that a chain saw is not like running water. So, they have church once a month? Is that a sin or against the law and frankly, I don't think attending church is related to "quantity" but "quality" but, of course, I guess you are the one that should be judging that. Do you actually know we pay for the medical bills for ALL children born or could this have been more serious cases requiring medical intervention and give me a break on that anyway since the cost of delivering a child is nothing like what those up on welfare hill milk out of the system year after year and decade after decade. Skinny horses? Might want to worry about the skinny kids in town, the pale and weak looking ones of which there are many. The starving and diseased cats and dogs. Dogs tied out without shelter, food and water. Oh, but no, that has nothing to do with the Amish.

I believe they need to go out and make sure ALL properties are in compliance and not using outhouses and not just target this one group. I am guessing they will use either composting toilets, which are much more earth-friendly than filthy septic tanks or perhaps do as they do at Gunn Park. I would still like to see the State out to inspect the feedlots and what they may be doing to the groundwater.

You show ignorance of the lifestyle and hostility toward it so perhaps you should read your post again. Being critical of them because they don't strike up conversations among the curious out in public? Do you feel that away about other groups?

Got a fascination or fear of the lifestyle? Get a book! These people want to live a peaceful life. And, you have a choice of who you buy from and if you don't like them, buy from someone else.

Seven years with outhouses, some farmers go in to complain about traffic issues but the commission can't help with that, so they manage to find an ordinance that isn't being complied with, a farmer goes out to summon them to appear in front of the commissioners where they are told they are going to try to be forced to each install a $1,000 septic system that goes against their religious beliefs and now, the best I can tell is that they are being told to find a solution. I would hope that the commission for their area is helping with this and the others also. These people are members of the community.

Bottom line is that they have been singled out constantly about one issue or another and that spells "agenda". I have yet to find one person face-to-face that doesn't think this now constant attack on the Amish is wrong and are embarrassed by it. I wonder what it will be next.

Keep digging on the Amish you pathetic excuses for productive citizens in society. The horses they use, work. Unlike the fat ass hay consuming nags running around your pasture. There way of life is very difficult and I for one admire their willingness to NOT conform to the ways of this world anymore than necessary. Madison and his little group of turds are nothing more than money men living in glass houses throwing rocks. Leave these folks be.....
Sad this is most of the people that are commenting on this all live in town. They never see the Amish unless they are in town so they don't have to deal with all of there "shit" if I have to abide by the law do should they. Guess how many of you pay for there hospital visits they have ALL OF US cause they can't. They seem more like a burden to society than anything right now.

Who cares if they want to poop in a hole in the ground!! Yes, it goes into our ground water, but where do you think our turds go when we flush!? Outer space??? They go right back to our water to be cleaned and enjoyed again.

Leave these people alone! I don't agree with all their quirks, but they are law abiding citizens...and besides a little horse dooky here and there, they make no problems. I would rather swerve around their horse mess than deal with the low life thieving creeps that seem to abound around here...buying smokes on my tax dollars.

You should be able to poop on your own property wherever you want.

So you may think that they are rude but they don't understand you. This is for HTE hey could you look up the fools taxes and see if they owe back taxes or if there are any codes that you can find on them and their feedlots? Here is a thought that was expressed eariler... People whom reside in lead crystal dwellings should not propell small geological speciments. I know big words tiny brains. I typed slow. Thank you HTE.
