Carl Ashley and Betsy Dixon studied up on state history, called on their decades of living in South Florida and six weeks later came up with what they hope will become the new official state song: Florida, My ...

Floridas' state song should not be changed. To many people have nothing to do but worry about things like this.

Why not keep Swanee River and redo the minstrel-era lyrics? Nobody's going to write a better tune than Stephen Foster.

I agree 100% Nothing wrong with the current song. I listened to the three 'finalists' for a replacement. The first two put me to sleep and the last one was just awful. Each did nothing more than conjure images of old people moving down to St. Pete. or Miami Beach to live out the last few years of their lives. I'd rather listen to Muzak.

The old song was fine. Most people didn't even know the words let alone that it had anything offensive in it. You want to be offended just listen to a few rap songs! The "n" word is okay as long as a cracker didn't write the lyrics I guess.

The word white person will now replace cracker as not to offend anyone else!

Political Correctness is going to kill us all.

Why not just make the song, "Old Folks on the Golf Course" instead? Or, perhaps, something more like, "In the Grand Ol' State of Foreclosure."

Bah!

Keep the old song preserved as a historical document. The three songs proposed are terrible. When I moved to Florida in 1954 there was a song we sang in elementary school that goes like this: "I want to wake up in the morning where the orange blossoms grow. Where the sun comes peeping into where I'm sleeping and the song birds say 'Hello'!I want to wander through (can't remember the words) and I'll make my home in Florida where the orange blossoms grow." I though that was the State Song. It was nice, quick little tune that was uplifting and I think that should be the State Song. Does anybody remember it?

I agree 100%... Yes, there was slavery in the Old South, you can't that fact. But removing all reference to it from history doesn't mean you will create a Utopia you are offended by the lyrics of a song, don't listen to it. I don't like Gansta Rap lyrics but I don't hear anyone wanting to change those lyrics. Maybe the Florida Song should be sung in Spanish, that should make everyone happy.
Why are so many people "soft skinned"? This PC crap has got to stop.

I cannot believe that Charlie Christ has wasted some much tax payer money on this stupid issue. How about not changing the song and get rid of the governor.

Keep Swanee River, as the poll indicates 80% if the populace wants, and substitute, for the "offensive" term "darkies", blacks. Or afro-americans. Or whatever the NAACP dictates every 15 or 20 years as they go from one en vogue identity to another ...

The idiots are running things again. Really, darkies - blacks, what is the difference? Do we have a D-word now, to join the N-word, the B-word and H-whord and .... geez, we are going to run out of alphabet soon.

It is a sad day, indeed, when this state is run by a PC consensus. Florida is lost and will become another California. We have the illegal aliens, we have the gangbangers and we have the socialst yankees that have invaded our state and brought their Constitution-raping ways with them.

How terrible. If I were a yankee, I would be ashamed of myself to the point it would disrupt my life. If I were an afro-american, I would be likewise ashamed of myself. If I were an illegal alien, I would also be likewise ashamed of myself. But I am not they, and they do not share my good American values.

It just goes to show that a lot of people in this country are in a position that sets them one step from losing the mental capacity to properly function. Half this country is flat-out dysfunctional.

THIS IS THE MOST INCOMPETENT POLITICAL LEADERSHIP IN THE UNITED STATES. MY HOMEOWNERS TAXES & INSURANCE HAVE SKYROCKETED / ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS ARE FLOODING OUR STREETS / OUR SCHOOLS ARE GRADUATING ILLITERATES & PUBLIC UNIONS ARE RIPPING OFF THE TAXPAYERS. THE ENTIRE MIDDLE CLASS IS EXITING THIS STATE. NOW OUR STATE LEGISLATURE IS GOING TO REWRITE HISTORY SO NOT TO OFFEND THE MINORITIES. SPECIAL INTEREST ARE RUNNING THE STATE OF FLORIDA.

I love living down here, and I don't care what the state song is. Before this, I didn't know what the state song was and had never heard it played anywhere.

What an incredibility sad state of affairs this country and state have become! Rap Music glorifies RAPE, MURDER, and disrespects’ just about everything that is our country and someone is offended by the word darkeys???? This CRAP MUSIC is spewed daily throughout our state, like sewerage from a sewer pipe, and we think that a so called “exaggerated plantation dialect” might be offensive? Is there any wonder why Charlie and the rest of Florida’s politically correct legislators never get anything done for the citizens of this state? Have these guys ever had a coherent thought let alone a constructive idea? These clowns are about to trash the most beautiful and historic state song ever written and they won’t even put ‘Old Folks at Home” on the list for a vote because they know that it would win overwhelmingly! These delusional poor excuses for Americans think they know what is right and do not give a damn about the people they are suppose to be serving! This is why 26 states now have SECESSION movements that are growing like wildfire! Get ready for the storm because it’s coming!!!!!!!!!
