BREAKING NEWS: New details in Katlyn Long investigation

Full story: The Ukiah Daily Journal

After a year of protecting details that might damage a potential court case, Sheriff's officials have released a great deal of new information about the death of Katlyn Long, 22, of Fort Bragg, on May 29, 2008.

Oh and from the Press Democrat story and I quote;
"Investigators do not know where Long obtained the fatal dose of methadone, a drug used to help drug addicts quit using opiates. She was not known to use drugs recreationally and none was found in her bedroom, located in the basement of her parents' Fort Bragg home, Noe said."
Check your facts wow.

The victim had no known history of using the drug. No sign of the drug was found at her residence. Her ex had an argument with her that day and allegedly vandalized her vehicle. He then returned to her residence, was with her continuously, and less than nine hours later, she was dead.
Call me suspicious, but does this strike anyone else as slightly more than coincidental? Unfortunately, he is not willing to give a statement.
He does have the right to remain silent, but in this case his silence screams out his guilt. If he truly cared anything for her, he would freely tell all he knows in hopes the truth would come out. Unless, of course, he knows the truth and knows it would convict him.
This case will not be solved with any help from him. It will rely on someone with a conscience to come forward and say what they know about the case, about the ex, about where the methadone came from, about something the ex may have carelessly said to them.
Someone out there is very bothered by the knowledge they have about this case, knowledge that would solve the case and provide answers for the family. They deserve to know the truth. You need to clear your conscience.
If you feel bad now, how do you think you will feel the next time an innocent person dies because you withheld information that would bring the person responsible to justice?
Thank-you! You are exactly right on!

He didn't do it. I know for a fact she popped pills all the time in High school. Her choice of drug was Vicadin back then. She also smoked pot all the time. She was a big stoner. I think she accidently over doesed and her parents need someone to blame so he is the scape goat and I feel soo bad for him.
You must not be a parent. Parents do not want to cast blame or build up lies surrounding their children't deaths. They want to know the truth and honor their children's memories. They want to prevent other's children from dying the way theirs did. It would be very strange for this girl to fall in love and make definitive plans to go see her man knowing she was going to die. People about to kill themselves don't make future plans like that. I hope the family does have lawyers because if people keep slandering Katlyn such as accusing her of doig drugs, they can subpoena internet records and determine who is attacking their child who cannot defend herself. Libel and slander are serious.

Seems to me they should look into his past ex girlfriends. I know of one that was in a relationship with him that was not so good. Digging up ones past might find a pattern!

So its the families thinking that he drugged her? If so, how?

Also, some people have said things about the suspect's family. Are they rich or something?

There must be a lot of holes in his story or statement because if there wasn't they would not be investigating it further. As far as the person who made the comments about Katie and her alledges drug use, don't you know how wrong it is to make statements about someone who is no longer her to defend herself? If there is one thing I cannot stand is those who speak ill of the dead. Katie is not here to defend herself but her family and friends are and they will keep doing so until justice is served.

Facts about methadone:

"The chief serious hazard associated with this opioid when used for pain management is respiratory depression. What makes this particular opioid more problematic than most is that accumulation to steady state can take a week or more. This slow approach to steady state levels brings with it the possibility that side effects can also appear slowly. In the majority of cases, the drug is administered to outpatients; therefore, the patients are unmonitored as the drug accumulates. Specific populations such as the elderly or those prone to abuse of medications may be at particular risk for delayed respiratory depression caused by methadone. Data strongly support the notion that methadone's slow accumulation can have lethal consequences. For example, Sims et al.1 found that the number of methadone deaths increased 1,770% from 1997 to 2003."

Translation: this drug is dangerous because it metabolates very very slowly, so slowly that this young woman could have taken what would eventually become a fatal overdose many hours before she and her ex-boyfriend spent the night together.

Don't you think the authorities have experts they talk with? They do. It also kills outright for that matter. They know the levels. They know the half-life. This has been a very thorough investigation. The evidence is strong. All avenues have been checked and rechecked with one conclusion.

Really?

Since there's no way to test her metabolic rate with this particular drug, and since the rate is varies for everyone, and since some of the first dose could have still been in her system when she o.d., please tell us how any toxicologist would be able to pinpoint how much methadone she took and when?

Again, all avenues have been checked and rechecked. It will all come out in the trial. There is much you do not know yet. We are not at liberty to divulge any information at this point. Please remember this is an investigation that has been going on for over one year. Also please remember that this is our beautiful Katlyn that we loved dearly that we are talking about. It may be easy for you to talk about this like just some passing interest but for us it was a blow to our hearts. We will never get over her loss. She was innocent and trusting and it cost her her life. Talking about the facts we have gone over and over for more than a year is not something I want to do on a topix forum. I want the chance to do it in a court of law. That's all we ask. Rest assured no stone has been left unturned.

It was a lethal dose. There was no sign of it in Katlyn's room. The ex-boyfriend was with her for several hours or more before she died. If it metabolizes slowly, at some point wouldn't the ex-boyfriend have noticed she was in some sort of distress and called for help?

And why did he take so long to make a statement? He should have been eager to clear himself.

Also, what do you mean "some of the FIRST dose could have still been in her system when she OD'd." Are you saying there was more than one dose? Why would you think that?

Saying it was a "lethal dose" means absolutely nothing because whether or not a dose is lethal depends on the individual's body chemistry and how fast they metabolize this particular drug.

Drug mfgs have been heavily marketing methadone under different brand names as a pain medication for over ten years. It is one of the cheapest and most widely prescribed pain pills in the U.S. which means if she didn't have a prescription herself, she could have gotten some pills from a friend or even a family member.

"Public Health Advisory

The FDA issued a public health advisory in November 2006 to provide patients and their caregivers and health care professionals with safety information to prevent serious complications from methadone use. The advisory stated: "Prescribing methadone is complex. Methadone should only be prescribed for patients with moderate to severe pain when their pain is not improved with other non-narcotic pain relievers. Pain relief from a dose of methadone lasts about 4 to 8 hours. However, methadone stays in the body much longer, from 8 to 59 hours after it is taken. As a result, patients may feel the need for more pain relief before methadone is gone from the body. Methadone may build up in the body to a toxic level if it is taken too often, if the amount taken is too high, or if it is taken with certain other medications or supplements."

Please take your anti-police and pro-drug bias somewhere else. You are neglecting the fact that the victim had no known history of use of methadone. She spends time with the ex, he is with her constantly in the last hours of her life, he summons help only after she is dead, and refuses (to this day) to be interviewed by the police and only now has released a statement written and approved by his attorney. All the facts point to only one person as being responsible for the death of the victim, and it was not the victim. Quit playing devil's advocate at the expense of the family that has already suffered enough.

What is your agenda? What do you mean by saying, "Saying it was a "lethal dose" means absolutely nothing "? It was lethal for Katlyn and that means a lot to us. If you want to educate people about medications and supplements go somewhere where it is more welcome, all you are doing here is causing more pain.
