Japan has had the lead in Mass Transit for years. Okinawa Prefecture, has dedicated bus lanes on the inner lane. You can only use these lanes for turning at an intersection, otherwise you stay out of them. There are signs posted every block or so, and the asphalt is marked with a bus symbol. Motorcycles and motor scooters have the right away when traffic is stopped. They can go to the nead of the line - so to speak -and start at the stop-bar when traffic starts up. Route 1 needs to be widen to three lanes first and it should work. Courtesy and obeying the traffic rules is a big factor - being a homogenious society - Japan has the edge and always will.
