Sounds like one loser took out another and at the same time has taken himself out of society. Win-win for non-criminals.

Your comments are ignorant. One of you assumes that both men are losers. The other should re-read the story and fully comprehend what was reported before submitting a third response. Clearly, neither of you know the parties involved. You both rushed to make statements that lack insight, empathy, and prudent conscience.

A mother lost a son, a wife lost her husband, a son lost his father, and a sister lost a brother defending her against a domestic assault. Please, think about that for a moment.

Rahman Garrett died a hero!

As for the shooter, no explanation, excuse, nor comment can rationalize his behavior. He was obviously troubled and lacked self control. As with most circumstances, his choice chose his destiny. He must deal with how this decision altered his own life and his fiancee's, as well. May God have mercy on his soul.

My thoughts, prayers, and heart are with the Garrett family...yours should be, too.

I would just like to have an explanation for this part of your post: Rahman Garrett died a hero! He was choking out his girlfriend and he got shot for it. Nowhere in the story do I see any reference to him being a hero. Please clarify this statement.

Typically, I would not respond to such a remedial and misguided statement. However, since you obviously have a problem with reading comprehension, I will spell it out for you. THE BROTHER WAS NOT THE SHOOTER!!! The brother did not have a gun. The brother did not pull a trigger. The boyfriend seems to be the only "bad actor" in this case. The boyfriend choked his girlfriend. Just read the article.

The foul language is unnecessary. Find better words to communicate if you want others to take you seriously.

Rahman Garrett was the brother. Carl Marion is the fiancee. Carl Marion choked his girlfriend. The brother pushed him off her. The boyfriend (Carl) then retrieved a gun and began to shoot the brother (Rahman). So, Carl Marion was the "choker" AND the "shooter."

I say Rahman Garrett died a hero because he intervened (without a gun) during the domestic assault. Rahman Garrett, according to this article and others, never had a gun, nor did he pull a trigger. He became involved to get Carl Marion off his sister. And Carl Marion responded like a coward who lacks self-restraint.

I hope this helps. Thanks for asking for clarification.

OK, I guess this is the part of the story that confused me because they're saying that Garrett is the one that choked his own sister and that Marion shot him for it. The story is very confusing. This is the part I'm referring to:'Garrett "put his hands around the throat of the sister, and the other guy decided he wouldn't have any of that," said police Sgt. Jeff Decker.' I think they got the names mixed up. Really bad reporting eh.

Can people not read? The punk a@* fiance shot the brother. The brother was defending his sister from domestic violence. Nowhere in the report does it say they were both shooting at one another, which means the brother didn't even have a gun. My prayers go out to this family beacuse especially the sister/fiance beacuse it a moments time she lost 2 people she loved and cared about.

Wow! All I can say is that I knew the people personally. This brother was defending his sister and the boyfriend decided to shoot instead of fight. This story is so tragic being that we just lost her other brother less than 2 years ago. People say things not being sensitive to the family. How horrible that you don't realize that this was some one's son, husband, brother, friend, cousin, uncle, and a human above all. He was trying to protect his pregnant sister from being abused. There was no prior abuse by the boyfriend to forsee anything this horrible coming. Please know some facts before you speak on it. This kind of stuff is hurtful.

Everybody is losing in this, Carl is going to miss his little girl being born & raised, & Carl will miss his family & the brother is going to miss out on just living with his wife & son & family, just everyday oh living, this is really SAD, Big Carl would be so hurt for both families(Marion's & Garrett's) my prayers go out to both families!!!!

This story is really sad and I am still in shock after finding out about it today. I know all of these people and their parents. As Nicole stated in her post Rahman lost his brother to a shooting in 2006. Their mom is still grieving and now she has to bury her surviving son. Carl's story is also tragic because he lost his father around 2004 or 5 and that sent him into an emotional tailspin. We have a family tragedy with two mothers who know each other and whose children grew up together attending the same church. This is more tragic than you can imagine. These are not young people who are ignorant and losers but human beings who have been touched by violent tragedies that have unfortunately continued to take a toll on their lives and their families lives. If their is a therapist in the audience, how about volunteering some counseling for these grieving human beings and help them try to make sense of these horrible events. Lose the sarcasm because all of us are but one event away from a life changing circumstance. This world will not get better until we learn to see everyone as human beings in all of their humanity which is not always pretty. Consider yourself and your family and how you would hope people will respond to your tragedy if it happened.

I don't normally leave comments like this, but I just felt I needed to say something. Rahman Garrett has been my bestfriend for 21 years. He was my friend, my brother and my heart and I don't know how his family or I will ever be able to get past this.
For those who read the story with the misquote from Sgt. Decker, I found the correct quote in a story from another newspaper and just thought you should know what it was really supposed to say.

"Rahman Garrett, a Rialto resident, died at the scene. His sister's fiance shot him 10 times after they fought over the woman, Decker said.

Just before 4 p.m., Garrett saw Carl Marion, 22, of Apple Valley, put his hands on his sister's neck, Decker said. A scuffle ensued and Garrett was shot, Decker said."

So, before anyone calls this a "win-win for non-criminals", look his 6 year old son in the eyes and tell him that, or how about looking into the eyes of his mother, his wife, his sister or even me...his bestfriend?

Yes, this was a senseless act of violence that never should have happened, but the fact is that it did! The fact is that now this world is without a very wonderful, loving man. The fact is that wether a senseless act of violence or natural causes, it still hurts! It still feels like a part of me is missing.

To The Garrett's, my family...my friend's...I love and miss you all. I will see you all soon!

Nicole you got it right. My wife and Lanetta are good friends and she explained it The same way you did. All Rahman wanted to do was watch out for his sister. I knew Roc and his wife and lil Roc and they would come to our home when we lived in Moreno Valley,Ca. We loved him like a son and his brother Shariff. Our hearts are hurting for Lanetta, Ty, Carol and lil Roc. The papers need to print a correction to this story.

So true. Thanks for every body who actually knew all involved. I pray that the family can take it day by day. The pain is still raw from Riff and now this. Some people just talk without speaking. This is truly rough. I had not had the chance to meet the fiance, but I pray for his family as well. It is a loss-loss situation. May God be with every one ivolved.

You know what I'm not going to comment on your lack of empathy. I'm not going to even comment on your ignorance. You obviously have no idea whose children these are. Above belonging to Lanetta Garrett, they belong to the Father the Son , and the Holy Spirit. It's easy to say leave a situation you've never been in, it's easy to be judgemental, and not have all of the facts. Lanetta has lost two boys to senseless acts of violence, Children have lost their fathers, and a sister no longer can hold either one of her brothers, and is left to explain this to her child once she's born. Rahman did what any brother or man would have done if he saw his sister in a bad situation he jumped in and the lack of judgement displayed by the assailant, cost Rahman his life. All we should be doing is uplifting the family, and keeping them in prayer. Blunt you should be slower to speak, and be kind you have a lot more life to live and during your time of you would want someone praying for you not passing judgemennt. God bless and Keep you Blunt, and the Garretts! Love always Ms. Justice!

<quoted text> No you are ignorant, because it is people like those, you speak so highley of getting innocent people killed, while trying to protect little sister from her abusive boyfriend, how can you say these guys were good? maybe they were once, but the reality is, one of them tried to choke his girlfriend (against the law) and the other took the law into his own hands and carelessley, shot the other not once or twice but ten times. Of course I feel sorry for the family, especially the dead guys, but what if an innocent person had gotten killed that day? Would you still say that those are good men? People like you not understanding these things (unless it happens to you) you are the reason that the world is so f.u.c.k.e.d. up today, I do not feel sorry for idiots who carelessly discharge guns in public places where any one of our family members could have been So take your key board and stick it way up your a.s.s
