There are two possibilities here. Either he's a lowlife gang banging criminal that's guilty of this crime or a lowlife gang banging criminal that's had a miraculous change of character and simply the unfortunate victim of an exceedingly rare chain of statistically improbable events - not unlike getting struck by a meteorite.
I say we bet on the safe odds and follow the common thread for both scenarios. Lock up the lowlife gangbanging criminal.
In the unlikely event that he is innocent of this particular crime and these events were of the "struck by a meteorite" variety, I'll sleep easy knowing the "meteorite" was a special delivery from a higher power.
Karma just ran over his dogma.

The proper thing to do when he got the *chirp* was to call the police.(assuming this *chirp* story is true - probably not)

Because he failed to call the cops when he should have, he gets to spend the rest of his life in The Joint for being stupid.

If I ever get into trouble, I hope I have a better story than this fool's.

If he got a text message, it was either still on his phone, or they can retrieve it. His cell phone bill would also show all calls made to it, so it ought to be pretty easy for him to clear his name, if he is innocent. But why run from the cops and jump fences if you are innocent? That part simply doesn't make sense to me. I can see ducking, I can see laying down to keep from getting shot, but jumping fences? That's not a natural reaction.

Another innocent man on trial. Give me a break, if this jury let's this dirt bag go, I hope he goes to each of thier house and rob them. If it walks like a duck and quack like a duck it must be a duck.
