The law makes of Wisconsin should get off their fat asses and make strict laws against puppy mills. But what can you expect from a state that hunts it's bird of peace, "The Mourning Dove".

Channel 4 out of Milwaukee is doing an excellent piece on the puppy mills of Wisconsin, tonight they report on the Amish and the puppy mills they have....

AMISH RUNNING PUPPY MILLS;

By Holly Zachariah

MILLERSBURG, Ohio -- The cream-colored Pomeranian, no bigger than a basketball, arched her back like a riled-up porcupine.

Atop the plastic table, she stood on shaking, spindly legs. The auctioneer's call rang out, and the bidding began. As the pace picked up, her price increased even as she deflated. The little dog had lost her bluster; her ears drooped and she tried to hunker down.

But she was on display, and her young Amish handler would have none of that. He straightened her legs and gave her a quarter turn so the crowd could get a better look.

In less than 60 seconds, the gavel fell. She went for $350, high by any standard. But the sale bill says she had bred with a Yorkshire terrier. She could be pregnant. That almost always ups the price.

This was business as usual yesterday at the Buckeye Dog Auction even as a protest raged out front.

About 50 demonstrators came to spread their message that puppy mills are bad and that dog auctions should be outlawed.

"Got morality? Stop puppy mills," the signs read.

And from the gravel road in front of the auction house, they shouted at those driving through the gate: "Read your Bible. It calls for tender, loving care of animals."

Animal-rights activists set their sights months ago on this auction, a daylong event held about six times a year in Holmes County. Opponents say the breeding dogs are kept in awful conditions and that their physical health is even worse.

But an inspector on site yesterday from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which licenses dog breeders, said she'd seen nothing wrong. She wouldn't give her name.

The catalog listed 339 dogs. Interested bidders browsed the pole barn and studied the animals, most in metal cages stacked four high in 25-foot-long rows.

It smelled of urine, and many dogs huddled in the corners of the cages. That didn't deter buyers. More than 100 appeared to be registered, and nearly double that came as onlookers.

Finally, WI is taking a look at the puppy mill problem. Tonight there is a meeting at the technical college in Appleton. Politicians and anti-puppymill folks will be having a question and answer session.

Let's just say a prayer that there will be LAWS made to protect these innocent animals, since they can not protect themselves.

It is my firm belief that until the public truly understands and appreciates the cruel aspect - not to mention the corruption and consumer fraud - connected with "dealing dogs", puppy mills will continue to generate millions of dollars for their breeders and their distributors.

For more information of efforts to address puppy mills and dog auctions in OH, I invite you to visit our website www.BanOhioDogAuctions.com .

Mary in Ohio:
I believe I get emails from you in my hotmail...It's been pretty quiet here - no news on any laws or anything pertaining to these awful puppymills, I would like to treat these owners the way they treat these poor dogs, especially gerald schultz and his pretty penny kennels.

Muskyhusky, I just purchased a puppy from Mr. Schultz. His pup was in perfect condition, even the vet said so. She was of great temperment and great health. I just love it when people sit and bitch about puppy mills but none of you bother to really look at the bigger picture. What about all these animals that are forced into show dogs? What about all these animals that are put into Humane Society's and they say they are "no kill" shelters. Leave Mr. Schultz alone. I've raised, bred miniature schnauzers since I was 9. And I found nothing ... did you hear me NOTHING ... wrong with Mr. Schultz puppies. I was even an unannounced guest intentionally cause I wanted to see for myself. This is the second pup in 20 years we've purchased from him. I'd do it again in a heartbeat. Leave the man alone!

No I'm not and my puppy passed all vet checks and is doing perfectly fine. I've read that site and actually any animal can come down with any illness months or years later. Amazing that nobody can prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the illness that westie had was cause by Mr. Schultz farm.

Kathleen- Does this sound like an educated person to you?

From: http://www.nowisconsinpuppymills.com/mill-int...

Schulz has been raising dogs for 30 years, and he's got an answer for every complaint raised by the puppy people:

He says there are not "too many dogs" in each pen: "They're much better dogs if you get 'em with more dogs. If you've just got one dog to a pen or even if you've only got two, then one's dominant and when you get 'em home, he's always fighting you for who's the boss. When you've got more in a pen like I do and they're mixed up once in a while, they're more submissive, easier to train."

Schulz says they don't need to be let out for exercise: "Then they'd be unhappy, they'd want to get out again. This way they don't know no better. They're happy where they are."

He says dogs don't need to be indoors during the winter, "There's no need for it. They were outside for a million years. It's only the last 200 that people have been putting 'em in the house."

Read the article or don't be ignorant to horrific problem...

If those so so-called government officials in Madison doesn't make some stronger animal abuse laws and shut down ALL the puppy mills in Wisconsin [that includes the Amish] we are well on our way to becoming the puppy mill capitol of the the US of A:-(

I just purchased a beautiful 8 month old Lhaso Apso from Mr. Shultz. I have had him about 2 weeks he is in perfect health, a little shy, but otherwise a very nice little guy. I saw nothing that looked like his dogs were underfeed, sick or suffering. I did see happy healthy puppies. And everything was very clean. What makes a "puppy Mill'? Isn't it neglect? A person that breeds dogs and sells them is not a "puppy mill" just for doing so. If you must lable something a "puppy mill" than it should discribe a place where puppys are neglected, underfeed, sick and so on. This is the 3rd dog I have gotten from Mr. Shultz in 15 years. All of them have been healthy, and lived long and happy lives with us. There is ad after ad of people selling puppies, alot of these people don't have a clue what they are doing, Mr. Shultz has been raising dogs for years, a person can get a very nice animal, at a reasonable price from Mr. shultz. Come on people go after the real "puppy mills", not Mr. Shultz.

Oh the lazy people always pick on gerald schultz because he is only one hour from Milwaukee, Go to Kingston where the amish breed its horrible makes gerald look like holiday Inn. I purchased a dog from pretty penny the Vet said it was sound and in good health I havent had any problems plus I have AKC papers to prove its a purebred. The petstores in milwaukee want 1200 for a mutt with no AKC.

Kathleen: What planet are you from? If you think Schultz is such a "good guy", check out the Channel 6 investigation called "Puppies Left out in the cold" and see if you feel the same way. I think you need to go to the Wisconsin Puppy Mill Project site and see what documention they have on Schultz. Let's stick him in a cage at 10 below zero, on a wire floor and sit/sleep in his own urine. Kathleen -- you must be a relative -- get real!!

Gilbert and Carol: You must have been lucky. How can you people support this cruelty. Besides, do you really think the hundreds and hundreds of people who think he's scum are lying or do not have evidence. How ignorant can you be? You're just fueling the fire.

Note to Gilbert Sullivan, AOL
Apparently you don't realize that your AKC papers are as good as a piece of used toilet paper!! The AKC is just another scam...the AKC has no idea who or what they are dealing with in regard to breeders. They just collect their money and send you your useless piece of paper. AKC is a joke. Schultz is not a joke he is for real and is one of the worst Puppy Mills in the State of Wisconsin. Wake up Gilbert, or perhaps you are his kin!!

Gilbert Sullivan is right, the Amish have disgusting puppymills, their a religious lot but apparently their religion does not include the creatures [dogs] that God put on this earth.

Just because one pup was in perfect condition, that does not mean the place treats all of its' animals well. Gerald Shultz and his wife should be put out of business. I have been there and witnessed up to 6 dogs crowded into one kennel and the dogs have to walk on wire and have no comfortable place to rest. My friend purchased her cocker spaniel there and when he took him out of the cage, he grabbed him by the scruff of the neck and dragged him out of the cage opening, scraping his belly against the metal. We were told that he was 12 weeks old and when she got him home, she found out he was 5 mos old but was athin and small. He was probably never bathed because on the ride home he stunk so bad of urine that all of us in the car were getting sick. He had infected ears and got a cherry eye days after she bought him. He was not socialized at all and piddles when he gets excited. There have been stories done about the place on the news and people have witnessed unsanitary and unsafe conditions there. Also, noone needs to breed hundreds of dogs at once like they do.

PEOPLE who care about animals as LIVING beings, have a right, no. A responsibility to *sit and bitch* about puppy mills AND anyone who harms animals. The law needs to change and the ONLY ones who should be allowed to SELL animals are LICENSED breeders. Ones who actually care about animals and breed to continue the breed NOT for money.
I can't help but notice you left off your last name. Is it because MR SCHULTZ you felt the need to come on here to defend yourself? don't bother. People are aware of the *type* of business you run, and it has nothing to do with breeding animals per AKC standards.
You have my official contempt. As well as my unflinching attention. And that, is never a good thing to have. I am like a dog with a bone. I don't let go.
For everyone else, start calling your local reps and tell them to get up off their asses, because you ARE watching and want them to pick back up Senator Plale.
