"Bishop Conlon pointed out, "we live in a very transient and fluid society, and I'm not sure that society really places a high value on making and keeping a lifelong commitment."

May I please point out the transient and fluid attitude in the priesthood?

"I'm not sure that church leaders really place a high value on making and keeping a lifelong commitment to being open and transparent about their so called celibate priests, who sexually abuse their power with innocent kids and vulnerable adults."

The bishops are correct: there is a desperate need for the affirmation of marriage both in principle and in practice. There are deeper reasons for the necessity of marriage than many suspect, and these reasons are physical, psychological, social, and spiritual. These are things that those who are blessed with good and holy marriages can readily see. There is also a desperate need for reaffirmation of traditional virtues including modesty, chastity, and purity, before and throughout marriage. We need to reaffirm these virtues in order to dispose ourselves properly toward authentic marriage. When we look at the current state of society, the idea of re-instilling such virtues seems ridiculously impossible, but God is fully capable of miracles. Let us have faith!

As far as clerical scandals are concerned, they are painfully humiliating for all Catholics, and especially so for faithful priests. More careful screening before admission to the seminary and stricter discipline can be very beneficial in overcoming this scandal.

Daily Horoscope for December 1

Gemini

Spend the morning recharging your spiritual batteries and prepare for the coming Full Moon in your sign. Listen to your favourite music, surround yourself with your things and let confrontations and business dealings wait until you are ready. The Moon enters Gemini later today, so things will take on a much rosier hue.
