Teen accused of killing man in Flower Mound

Full story: www.dallasnews.com

A 19-year-old is being accused of intoxication manslaughter after an early Thursday morning accident in Flower Mound, police said. Flower Mound police said a man was walking in the 400 block of International Parkway about 2 a.m. when he was struck. Lauren Huskins, who was not injured in the accident, was taken to Flower Mound jail. A bail hearing was scheduled today. Flower Mound police spokesman Paul Boon said he did not immediately know the hometown for Ms. Huskins or the type of vehicle she was driving. The Denton County medical examiner's office was trying to identify the pedestrian.

Nineteen, drunk, out at 2:00 AM and behind the wheel of a car. Those factors can add up to nothing but TRAGEDY for all involved.

Young people! Read my words! The LEGAL age for drinking is 21 -- not 15, not 17 and not 19. 21 Period.

There is NEVER any excuse, no matter your age, to get behind the wheel of a car if you have been drinking.

I'm sure this young lady wishes today that she had called a cab or a friend to take her home. You can always go back and get your car later.

The life you take may be your own or, worse yet, that of an innocent victim.

...what about the "victim" walking in the street of a major roadway at 2:00AM? What was this guy's BAC?! I would not be surprised if he was struck from behind. Innocent...no, more like ignorant.

And alcohol is only one impairment to driving. What about talking on the phone or eating a big, juicy 10k cal burger. The only disadvantage for Lauren is that she could not mask alcohol in the blood stream. I wonder what the percentages of alcohol/drug related accidents/fatalities are compared to handheld/fatso related accidents/fatalities. Unfortunately, that comparison could never be made.

Seems like you guys have already convicted this young lady. Last time I checked in this country you were innocent until proven guilty. You probably ought to wait until the facts come out. Facts Like:
What was the blood alcohol level in this girl. Intoxication Manslaughter could be found on someone that has a BAC of .01% which you could get from drinking too much cough syrup.
When was the Breathalyzer last calibrated by the FMPD.
What was the BAC in the victom?
Why was he walking in the middle of a NON-LIGHTED Roadway where the speed limit is 55mph?

My point is if this young lady had NO alcohol in her system this accident would have still occured. This young man would have still lost his life.

There's more to this story. Let's wait till the end of this play and not get up and walk out when it is only at the intermission.

In response to these ridiculous comments the girl involved was intoxicated-no question and the victim would still be alive today if she had not made such bad choices that night. I happen to know all the facts and will not dignify your ignorance by explaining why he was walking on that road that fatal night but trust me when I say that he was the victim.

The article doesn't say he was in the street. Just that he was walking down the street. Streets have lovely little things called sidewalks. When you're on a sidewalk, you are "walking down the street" without actually being IN the street.

You can walk down a highway without being in "the middle" of it. In doing so, when you are struck, you can bet the car that struck you is NOT where it was supposed to be.

Nothing is going to happen to her. Same situation. Girlfriends grandma was killed by a drunk driver while delivering the Dallas Morning News. Nothing happend to the 18 year old girl who ran the red light drunk. That's just the way it is. Sad Sad indeed.

I do know that there are no sidewalks along this stretch of road and at this time of night/ morning it is very dark here. Yes this man was in a dangerous place walking. Where or why we don't know but I do know it was a mixture of circumstances that existed in this situation. No excuses for this girl who was underaged and drinking. None.. but all of the circumstances around this were bad and I came down that steet shortly after this and I know alcohol was not the only contributor. And this is a sad situation for all involved. victim, suspect, and the families.

some other things to think about.. we don't know how fast she was going.. and we don't know if she was distracted in any other way.. or what her alocohol level was.. but i do know that this girl after the accident was with it enough to call 911 for help and to ask passerbys to block the roadway so that others coming down the road would yield and not hit this man as well. i just hope all things are taken into consideration for the sake of all parties involved.

For those of you unfamiliar with that stretch of roadway I offer you this. There is no sidewalk and no shoulder. There is a grassy area approximately 25 feet in width that is serperated from the roadway by a curb. The young man was walking in the outside lane of traffic in the center of the lane. 500 yards prior to the POI you are on a hill and curve. There are no street lights. I don't think speed was an issue as the vehicle came to rest less than 100 feet from POI. The speed limit on this stretch of roadway is 55mph.

actually "Just the Facts" is very accurate on describing the roadway with the hill and curve. And the location of the incident. It is a very dangerous area to be even in a stalled car. The girls vehicle was in the lane stopped not over the curb.

The facts seem hazy in this tragedy, but one thing is certain: Flower Mound is pedestrian/cycling unfriendly. We should really try to accommodate bicycles and walkers as much as we do cars. We like to walk to the stadium for Friday night football, but it can be treacherous. Lets stop designing our community around the automobile. Someday when we pay $7.00 at the pump,
we will wish we had more bike lanes.

I miss Joe!!!!! He did not deserve to die. I had the pleasure of spending the last week of his life with him everyday was amazing. He had so much opprotunity and could have done so much with his life. We met in the funniest way but it was like fate, and we started to fall for each other almost immediatly, opening up to each other and both wanting to change the way we had been and get to the way we should be but with the support of each other. Now the chance has been stolen. I hope that who ever that girl is she thinks EVERY SINGLE DAY about what she has taken from the world, from me, his family, and his friends. I had to leave for florida just 2 days before this happened and just keep thinking how he would still be here if i didn't have to go. He kept telling me not to go. We spent almost every second together since the moment we met. GOD I MISS HIM SOO MUCH!!!!!!!!

This is no time to be fighting over senseless comments about 2 teenagers that have both lost their lives and yes I do mean both. I know Lauren and she is a sweet girl and I do not believe she was drunk and intentionally hit that person. It was a matter of both of them being at the wrong place at the wrong time. I feel for both families very deeply. The hurt both families will go through for the rest of thier lives is something that we can never repair for them. Both of these kids lives were just starting. If all of the hurtful things could be turned and around and help these parents and Lauren at this time it should. And please Don't forget about his friend that was there also.
