Let's say your getting ready for work, you watched the weather the night before, and knew it was going to be a little chilly. You grab your keys and head out the door to start up your car/truck, run back inside and finish getting ready. Only 5-10 minutes have passed, you go to leave, and BAM! your car/truck is gone. I have heard from a friend that the Florissant PD has had a rash of vehicles stolen, in the last week, from people leaving their cars running unattended. Three just today. These thugs are driving around, just waiting. Keep your eyes open for anyone/vehicles that look out of the norm, and call the Police.

The kiddo has one of those remote starters for his car which I will use to start for him on the days he drives to school. Thats the best way to go if you don't have a garage.

you would be surprised at the number of people that did this clint.
Florissant is full of hoosiers with no garage like that one guy with 6 "room mates". Remember him? I'd bet my next paycheck he lets cars run in his drive way.

Drive stick. Thugs too dumb to operate a manual. They might bust your window out of spite though.

Pretty sure he's referring to houses overcrowded with adults that have cars with expired tags packed all up on the driveway and easement. In which case, yes most of the time its a house full of hoosiers who don't bother cutting their grass or paying the trash bill for that matter either.

We have a carport and two cars so both cars are cold and one is covered with whatever precipitation the Lord blesses us with overnight. I have a small ceramic space heater that is basically a hair dryer that looks like an 8 inch cube. I have been using it for years to warm my car without even starting the engine. I set on the floor on the passenger side and plug in the extension when I we get up. By the time I finish breakfast, the ice or frost is melted and the car is warm. There are a lot of heaters I wouldn't use, like anything with a flame or where I can see any glowing red coils. But the enclosed ceramic heaters are pretty safe and I check it occasionally. It works great. I rarely scrape anymore and when I do it is easier because the heater softened up the ice. It does all the windows. It is probably safer in terms of fire or theft than running the engine. The cost of the electricity is likely less than the cost of gasoline to get the same amount of melting.

This has been going on for several years. Its no secret. Every winter the news stations tell people not to leave their car running unattended. In fact, its illegal in some cities. I'm betting most cities have an increase in similiar crimes this time of year and most of the stolen cars end up flying down east bound 70. I know it happens at gas stations along 70 all the way through wentzville, Im sure it happens at homes too. THis is nothing new at all.

Don't leave your car running unattended. Seems logical enough. You can't trust EVERYONE.
Since we can't trust everyone, maybe we should also take other precautions.
I'm sure the police would say, "By all means...DO!"
If you have kids you may remember a point when you had to "kid proof" the house. Anything let out within reach could tun into a problem.
So you had to look at everything and try to think what a kid could get into and what the repercussions might be.
Try thinking about your home and possessions and your safety like you were one of the idiots out there or one of the criminals.
It makes it easier to see the weaknesses.

Many moons ago I purchased a heater for my car. You had to splice this round metal device into the lower radiator hose and plug er in. Well it worked great for all the years I owned it,the heated water circulated all through the block all night. In the a.m.,the car was ready to go,warm oil, engine and heater. Haven't ever seen one since and don't know why. I also remember an electric dipstick that was like those little coils people use to use to reheat their coffee. Pull out the dipstick and push in the "oil warmer" and the car started much easier on those sub-zero mornings. There are a lot of solutions beside starting the car and idling it for a while and they don't leave your car open to theft or waste a lot of fuel.

Most crimes are based in opportunity. Easy pickings will tempt a lot of would-be criminals. It is not right, but it does seem to be basic human nature for many.
