Does anyone have a link to the list of properties that are scheduled to come down in Fitchburg?? As far as I'm concerned this is the one thing the city should be VERY active on. Tear Down The Junk!!

I weep for Fitchburg .. all those shuttered mills .. everything has gone so wrong for the United States.
Maybe, just maybe, they can turn this whole area around.

Grew Up in Cleghorn

I have owned in home in Fitchburg for 25 years, paid taxes and raised my children. I too grew up in Cleghorn in the '60's when Fairmont St. and Daniels St. had many shops and small neighborhood markets. As a kid, every Sunday I would go to Rene's Pastry Shop after Church with my brother and sister. There was a five and dime store and a small pet shop that I could walk to. I had a Sentinel paper route and picked up my papers at the Oak Hill Fire Station. My route covered a vast area of lower Cleghorn where now most of those buildings are gone. My parents have lived in the same building for over 60 years in Cleghorn that I grew up in. I know there are many other people out there who will agree with me that it makes me sad to see how Cleghorn has fallen into such decay over the past 3 decades from a vibrant, thriving community where it was safe to walk and play. Tearing down the buildings is not a solution to the problems in the area or most of Fitchburg for that matter. The problems are much deeper. The people who now reside in this area do not have the work ethic or pride in their neighborhood as those who resided there in the 40's-60's. It is even sadder to think that given the state of this city that it will probably never get better.

I grew up off Electric Ave in the late '60s when Fitchburg still had a chance. Stores on Main Street and not burned out buildings. Best shot it has now for rebuilding comes form the college outward, start at the old train depot (T station) which they tore down in the '60s, that started the demise. No where to go but up, if you work outward from the college. Then "vermin" will relocate to less desirable areas.

Making it nice will make it unaffordable for the people you say are bringing it down... Simple answers don't exist... but one bite at a time Is the way to consume an elephant. Start by picking up the trash on the street where you live. You don't have to clean it all up because "many hands make light work". Don't wait for someone else to do it... just start... all of us.. just start.
