How about ending feeding programs? Or even reducing or eliminating child tax credits? If society is going to raise the child why does the parent get to pay less in taxes? It seems much more fair for the parent to may the extra taxes that the child uses.
The class size argument is a union talking point that has been made into a truism, even though the results are that it makes little difference. And then the Teachers could give back some pay and benefits to make up the shortfall. |

Finally, someone with some wise advisers.
No spend thrifts in Ferndale. |
mentally handicapped children should go to handicapped schools.
we should do away with teachers aides. No special teachers to teach the Mexicans English. No free lunches or after school care ..... People have to take care of these things themselves. No give away programs!!!!!! My grandparents came here from Italy and had it very hard but America is where they wanted to be. Why are we catering and caring for everyone that comes into the US? |
Did you know the schools are also handing out free breakfasts? |
With all the government give aways our society isn't learning how to take care of itself. Both my parents worked and I was never in any after school programs because they didn't have any then.
I was taught to be responsible at a young age not depend on the government to take care of me. Have one program for kids and their parents, teach them how to take care of themselves and be responsible as necessary. |

"$25,000 from two special education students transferring to a lower cost program, "
$12,500 is just the CUT for ONE special needs student? That is just ridiculous. What is the COST???? And is that money well spent? |

And this is just how THEY like it. Keep the little people squabbling over "undeserved" crumbs for children while corporations loot the public treasuries from Wall Street to Main Street.
The biggest U.S. entitlements are received by the fattest U.S. corporations that pay ZERO taxes but enjoy the security of 730 foreign U.S. military bases, a stable currency, and a massive justice system enforcing corporate contracts!! No money, indeed. They discovered half a century ago that poor kids did as well as the rich one's in school when they had access to a nutritious, low cost breakfast. Who cares, we don't need them since corporations outsourced tens of millions of jobs to foreign children. Put those ungrateful U.S. school-kids back into the factories and watch our corporations repatriate. |

My child attends Ferndale Elementary and does NOT receive free food. And to what "after school programs" are you people referring too? There is no such thing in Ferndale. The only official "after school" place to go is the Children's Center...and it is definately NOT FREE! California is a state with a tremendous amount of financial issues; the cuts to our education system are painful and sad. The little that is spent on the "free breakfasts" or even lunches is not going to make even the smallest of a difference.

Really? Sometimes the right to free speech is annoying. |

Adam Smith the greatest proponent of free market capitalism wrote the book on the subject entitled, "An inquiry into the Wealth of Nations", in 1776. Ronald Reagen and his conservatives were the first to quote Adam Smith and self reliance. Capitalism not government was the source of wealth etc..etc.
What these conservatives failed to do was read his book. He had chapters on public education. Capitalism needs an educated workforce to prosper. Everybody benefits from a public education. It amazes me how many people are against public education. |

Remind me again how much the "interim" superintendent is getting paid each month... that is where the FAT is!!
Teachers get paid WAY too much for what they do....oh, they will tell you over and over again how they need to buy pencils for poor students out of their own pocket, but yet, they don't mind all those days off they get every year. Does anybody know what their "contract" is these days...? like 188 days of work for the whole year? So, if they make 40k a year, not bad. if they make more...well, let's not forget the pension they get for the rest of their life.
End Teachers Unions. End the Dept of Education, leave it up to the States. Cut Administration Positions that soak up big tax dollars to push paper and agendas. Let the School Board have more control on how the money should be spent. No more Fancy Schools. You could build 3 "institutional" solid, safe schools with the money they now spend to remodel one...these makeovers cost hundreds of thousands of dollars alone, and need to be redone in a decade. School uniforms mandatory. Stick to the basics on what should be taught. My child had to learn all about "Islam" and who "allah" is and what he stands for, but Christ was left on the back burner. My child also had to memorize all the countries in South America, etc, but not AMERICA. MULTI culturism, diversity, tolerance, homophobia, are not subjects to be taught in school. |
Are you kidding me???? They start at 24K a year. Substitute teachers get paid $90 a day!!! That is about 11.00 an hour. You couldn't pay me to be a teacher who has to deal with all of the retarded parents that shouldn't be parents. And yes, Ferndale does not have a free breakfast program or any afterschool programs like the rest of the county. They choose to spend the money that would go to those programs on education instead. |
I made no comment on free breakfast or to after school programs. You are harpooning the wrong whale. I made the argument that if society overall is going to have to pick up more of the costs of raising children, then the tax write offs should disappear. Why is it fair for someone without children to pay for your childs education? Do you know why the cuts have to come from "education"? Because that is where the majority of money is spent. Police, Fire, Roads, and Infrastructure have been on life support for years. Each Union has it's powerbase, and the most liberal wing of the Democrat party has taken charge in a brokered agreement with the most conservative wing of the Republican Party. And what has happened is that the average citizen has no say. My thoughts were simple ones, the tiny class size thing has been shown to be a fallacy. That perhaps Competent teachers do not need paid aids, that was ably done by Juniors and Seniors back in the '80's. And done as an educational part of the program. But that would undermine the union. Actually the amount of money that FSD needs to come up with, could be solved quickly. But it would require the union to concede to reality. |
What grade, what class? That would be really helpful. OK you might be nut burger. You learn all the countries in SA as part of learning Spanish. That was part of my College program. American geography, not taught out west since at least the early '80's. Do we need to look at teacher contracts? Yes. Do we need to look at admin contracts? Yes. Do we need to take the "sick, lame and lazy" out of regular classes? Yes. Do we need "GED academy's" so that kids that are destined by their parents to go to prison, are separated from useful people? Yes. And yes, if your child is not mentally there, he/she doesn't go to that school. Unless the parents pay all the costs, which is in fact impossible. Mainstreaming is a limited success, we can come up with better plans. I saw a commercial that showed a Downs woman winning the Homecoming Queen for the Parade, do you think that the real ballot wasn't #2? That the class figured they might gain some revenue if they elected the Down's girl? |

California is still one of the largest economies in the world.
Arnold needs to get over his political phobias and open a Bank of California. European nations have had gov. banks for decades, banks that didn't allow trading in derivatives and fared better in the crash. It would be a source of billions. We fail to invest in our children at great peril. For those who have never had the rapid leaning experience of being tutored, you have NO IDEA about the effective learning speed in smaller classrooms. |
