Excellent article. I live in LA and I have to say, there is something special about going behind the "Redwood Curtain". Life feels like it slows down. The frantic, hectic pace of the city melts away as the highway narrows and the traffic thins. So much of California is getting to look the same. I don't know why anyone would want to lose that charm and uniqueness. I find it unfathomable that they risk these trees which are thousands of years old; many, many lifetimes for something so nonessential. I guess it's the old "Drill, baby, drill." mentality. Crazy when half of our energy is wasted, but that is another story. So "truck baby truck." Guess I'll have to go out of California for that getting away from it all feeling. RIP redwood country.

The real question is this a wise choice to be spending so much money on during these tough economic times. The writer is right regarding the state of the roads in the County. There are certainly other places where the money could be better spent. Personally I think CALTRANS should assume responsibility for the Shelter Cove road. Improvements to this road would certainly encourage visitors and residents alike to visit the coast.
Bottom line, base your arguments on fact and not misinformation.
Your facts are wrong. Check it out before you post.

Actually redwoods are fire resistant. The Canoe Fire was a good example of that, killed a lot of doug fir but not many redwoods. The dead fir will open new seed sites for redwood release and regeneration. So maybe setting it all on fire is what the redwood forest really needs. Is that what you meant? Redwood response to fire? Fire is also good for maintaining oak meadow ecosystems. So you're right. Fire is a good thing!
Dag-nab it! That's what I was gonna say. Unless you burn it to the point it falls over (rarely happens), you can't kill a decent sized redwood with fire.

Re-alignment notwithstanding, it would sure be nice if CalTrans actually re-routed highway 101 around the main grove in the park. Sure, the Prairie Creek bypass had a lot of bad effects, but the end result was sure a nice "Parkway." Imagine the same scenario at Richardson Grove, a couple miles of low speed, interested in the trees traffic only...

Just add money!

The 1960's bypass worked when US101 was re-routed around "Avenue of the Giants". I can only imagine all of the traffic going up "Avenue of the Giants" with the growth that has come to Humboldt County since the 1964 flood. I remember US 101 before the "bypass". Lots of city dwellers have "escaped" their urban environment and recently "relocated" to Humboldt County, bringing their "urban philosophies" to "ram down the throats" of older Humboldt County residents. A bypass would be preferred for Richardson Grove and maintaining a more park like environment for visitors to our area. The critters don't care in the hustle and bustle that occurs in Richardson Grove, unless they get hit by a car while crossing the road of course. Things were different here prior to the 1955 and 1964 floods as I remember it. But the 1964 flood also brought floods of money to our area too, as "natural disasters" are oft to do. Money follows disasters.....maybe funding for a future bypass?

So you in LA want to dictate how we here live and do business? Are you kidding?
Believe me you won't even notice the difference in the road, but thanks for trying to keep us in the past now that you have destroyed where YOU live. Selfish selfish selfish.
People who live in cities have NO say as to how the rest of us who LIVE here decide to run our county.

Chesbro and Hockaday arent business owners?...nether is Save the Redwoods League. They all support the low impact environmental solution. Political polar opposites agree. Seems like all sides that have to pay attention to the details have no real problems with the project.
Why do you, Redondo Beach? Read the docs before you make a fool of yourself next time.
The author does not seem to want to look past her own doorway and personal profit to a plan that helps businesses, jobs and protects the environment.
Doesn't take much in the facts department to get a letter printed in the Times Standard.

This forum is just "chit chat". All informed individuals know the project is going to happen. A few individuals are spreading environmentalist lies to promote opposition to the project. Still lies though. Nuff said.

The Richardson Grove widening project will be to Caltrans as the Horizen oil rig is to BP. Once the gusher is opened, there will be no stopping it until the black ooze of sprawl spreads all along the 101 Redwood corridor.

Pre Dick

Are you really that clueless or are you making a special effort here?

You are working from a point of fear. Not a good point to advance any form of reason....unless reason would get in the way of your paranoia.

Get some rest.......you need it.

Great article by Loreen. She offered viable solutions. We're down with her 100% from Fortuna to Santa Rosa. 20+ very large old growth redwoods are scheduled to be eliminated and they're much larger than the 7 inch diameter trees misrepresented in the "stinking report". The final number hasn't been determined yet but when you drop huge trees accidents conveniently happen and then more trees must go. The sky isn't falling down here "Jus Defax" but the "Gateway To The Redwoods" means something to us and we will not allow it's destruction.

I dissagree that this project is frivolous and unnecessary.

There is no alternative to the ingres and egres of commerce via roads into and out of Humboldt County.

The sooner it gets started the better.

There are so many other options for visitors to enjopy the big redwood trees, like Redwood National Forest or Grizzly Creek on highway 36 and
Avenue of the Giants. Neither place is a main route for large commercial vehicles. One can cruise through those areas at their leisure without slowing up trafic necessary to stock our shelves with food and materials necessary to exist for the majority of the citizens in this area.

Just Wrong from Redondo Beach and Doorgunner your ignorance is laughable. Doorgunner...you should be ashamed of yourself...."20+ very large old growth redwoods are scheduled to be eliminated..." Where do you get this information? Your either a liar or you're a liar. Either way you have no credibility.

Here's the link to the EIR/EA: http://www.dot.ca.gov/dist1/d1projects/richar...

Why should Caltrans do any work on the road? Do your homework, it's not a state highway, it's the counties problem.

Daily Horoscope for June 4

Scorpio

Today's Lunar Eclipse at the Full Moon stirs up powerful emotions during the next two weeks (as it has done since the Gemini Solar Eclipse last month), and it may not be a very pleasant experience. Are you feeling rather compulsive and obsessive? Financial issues could be a problem,, especially if they appear to threaten your sense of emotional security. Don't let jealousy or envy make you do things that will set other people against you.
