Richardson Grove project is frivolous and unnecessary

Full story: Eureka Times Standard

I was one of the many persons who spoke "out of turn" to the Board of Supervisors last month regarding the proposed road "alignment" at Richardson Grove.

The "alignment" has already been bought and paid for. Much of the bribes will be spent in our community, raising the standard of living for drug dealers and prostitutes. They will in turn buy fast food and packaged liquor at our fine bottle shops, giving up the multiplier effect. So cry yourself a river for the trees. Boo hoo!

Frivolous and unnecessary? Great comedy writer. Sure, why not, as long as you're going to make a silly argument, you might as well go over the deep end.

The sky is falling.... No wonder these folks don't get any respect. Read the stinking report. The largest of the 20 redwoods to be removed is 7 inches in diameter. Look at the photo simulations.... No tourist will ever know a couple trees were removed.

The real question is this a wise choice to be spending so much money on during these tough economic times. The writer is right regarding the state of the roads in the County. There are certainly other places where the money could be better spent. Personally I think CALTRANS should assume responsibility for the Shelter Cove road. Improvements to this road would certainly encourage visitors and residents alike to visit the coast.

Bottom line, base your arguments on fact and not misinformation.

A closed minded person complaining how supporters are narrow minded?

As for the 7 million, 700-800 is going to be spent on the Novato Narrows 101 widening project, another 22 million was approved to widen 101 south of Santa Rosa, etc, etc, so I don't see the big deal about spending 7 million up here.

Actually, I think these first 4 comments prove her point about 'closed-minds' quite well.

And 'Jus'?, Where are the FACTS that show this will magically bring jobs and cheaper goods into
Humboldt? All weve seen is sketchy arguments via CalTrans, who OF COURSE think this is a great idea!
It gives them another project that they can spend millions on.

Seems to me just more non-thinkers angry about actually having to slow down for five minutes while driving through a beautiful and unique area.

Im not missing a dang thing living up here.

Yeah, why should we waste taxpayers money on barrier rail that prevents head-ons? Or yet more taxpayer money spent on an interchange that removes an at-grade intersection where the accident rate is higher that anyplace in Humboldt county expect maybe Indianola Road and 101 (get ready for that project, folks)? Sorry, Loreen, but it's 2010 and your clouded vision of 'your' world today isn't a viable alternative to the rest of us. But since you live in Phillipsville, I understand why you didn't wait your turn.

I sounds to me more like the original commentator is worried their business will be bypassed with the road being changed. If they had just come out and said that I'd have much more respect for the rest of the comments that he made.

If you work for or with a company that ships products to or from this area you will quickly recognize just how the length limitation affects this area. All of our product has to be shipped out in shorter trucks before being cross-loaded into bigger trucks somewhere else or it takes more loads to move. That increases the traffic, fuel use and cost.

The STAA restriction in Eureka at Broadway and 5th Street was removed years ago. Why does this keep coming up?

Also, about the curves south of Standish Hickey: It is not the shoulder width that determines if an STAA truck can get through safely, is has to do with the geometry of the curve and the road immediately before and after the curve. I have seen STAA trucks swap to the very short (and unsafe)tractors across from Standish Hickey for years.

Wow you sound like an idiot. Most of the backroads are rutted? You must not spend much time on them, I have no problem driving our local PAVED back roads.

You make it sound like they are cutting down Richardsons Grove, when they are not, or do you even know that?
Your letter supports the project because your protests are so clearly wrong.

Here's the deal. Growth is inevitable, so the best thing to do is ensure intelligent, thoughtful, sustainable developments, including improving infrastructure. The self righteous "I-got-mine" attitude around here has stunted progress for years. You can have your opinion, but a lot of thought and factual justification has gone into planning a project that has taken environmental concerns very seriously. It's time to move forward. If people of this community in the 1800s fought this hard to prevent growth what would this place be like today.

Oh, and the Alton overpass....was a much needed interchage which was justified based on numerous injury/fatal accidents. Unlike unbridled nay-sayers, projects aren't built based on emotions.

Eveyone has an ashsole friend who always complains about 'unfair' treatment. But everyone knows the friend is an ashsole so thier complaining ends up being an endorsement.

This letter is an endorsement of the Grove project.

Highway 101 is frivolous. Protect Richardson Grove for good, just remove the road altogether. Then see what people say about not having a road. But maybe the critters will like it with no traffic whatsoever. The park would be so nice with no cars and no people. In fact why don't we just take out all of our roads and stop driving cars. Horses and mules are the answer for future transportation needs. Sure am glad we have two horses and pack saddles to transport our goods to our house. And while we're at it we need to do away with all internal combustion engines too. Our use of internal combustion engines caused the oil spill and dead animals in the Gulf Coast.

If we do all this I think the sky will stop falling. LOL

I totally agree with you. And I can represent myself as an ashsole too, as I'm human and opinionated.

Actually, the information regarding tree removal is highly scrutinized and must be documented in environmental reports that are signed off by various environmental agencies including State Parks. Lying about what is to be removed is a huge no-no and punishable by law. No one on board is going to take the risk of losing their liscence. Sorry, there is no grand conspiracy. There are rules as to how projects get built and those rules a strictly followed. If you want to read lies, read the opniion, hype based "reports" provide by the Save Richardson Grove group.
FYI: I actually consider myself an environmentalist. But in a world of billions of people, drawing lines in the sand is not a productive practice.

Actually redwoods are fire resistant. The Canoe Fire was a good example of that, killed a lot of doug fir but not many redwoods. The dead fir will open new seed sites for redwood release and regeneration. So maybe setting it all on fire is what the redwood forest really needs. Is that what you meant? Redwood response to fire? Fire is also good for maintaining oak meadow ecosystems. So you're right. Fire is a good thing!

So what I want to know is why people still believe government authorities or corporate business. These people lie constantly and have gotten away with MURDER! What more will it take to teach people who don't live in the Redwoods that they are fast disappearing at the cost of "progress". It's the end of the dinosaur gas guzzling culture. The oil in the gulf will put a big damper on future oil drillings and force us to seriously use solar and other alternative energy. There is a revolution happening in the world, the battle is over the human mind, who will you listen to and what will you do with what you believe? Are you for the planet or money?
