Tim wrote: Certs? Education? References? Bonded? Certs is a joke, my cat could pass that. I have repaired computers for 20 years and have built over 40 computers for family and friends. I am not the person who posted this and I don't really do computer repair for a living but the main thing you need to know is how long he has done repair and if he is self taught (like me) or has a degree. Just because someone is self taught doesn't mean they don't know what they are doing. Besides most problems can be solved by looking the problem up on the internet and fixing it that way. The best thing you can do is either have the person come to your home or you go to their business. Most computer repairman can tell you the problem in 10 min or less. I should start a repair service on the side. I always loved those calls at any time of night or day when my family has a computer issue I might as well make them pay.:P

I think you can even do it online without having any supervision. So if I wanted to I could get you to take the test for me and just put my name on it if I didn't know how to repair computers. 14 years experience is good. And since your "Bonded" how much are you bonded for?

The industry standard certifications like CompTIA's A+ certification are administered and proctored at an authorized testing center. Exams like these generally cost hundreds of dollars. A true professional will validate his skills, knowledge, and ability by earning industry standard certifications.

Thanks. I'm just afraid it won't be compatible with my laptop so I'd rather get someone to install it for me that knows what they are doing!

Hey Computer Tech, you can see what a waste of time this site is for advertising. Newbs will keep pretending they they know things man. You will find that local word of mouth is the best advertisement. Do what you claim and in a reasonable amount of time and you'll be successful. Sorry for the stupidity you faced here, good luck man!

Microsoft, Cisco, CompTIA, ISC2, all of these are proctored. Most fail these exams when they first attempt one. They most definitely validate a person's skillset and employers always look for certifications when hiring IT personnel.

And since your "Bonded" how much are you bonded for? I am not sure of the certifications you are talking about but 6 volumes and 4800 pages of study guide isn’t a small deal. As far as being bonded, you have to be bonded to work for businesses. I am an IT professional and I am bonded by my company. Don’t belittle someone’s effort and act as if their education is not a big deal. It is a big deal and it is what gets you the paying jobs. Assembling a home computer doesn’t make you an IT guy, it makes you the guy your neighbor calls when they do not want to spend any money.

Assembling a home computer doesn’t make you an IT guy, it makes you the guy your neighbor calls when they do not want to spend any money. Certs is no where near 4800 pages. If it is then they changed it since I studied for it. I actually passed but never spent the money on the diploma. So I don't have a diploma for certs. If certs is all he has then yes I can and will make fun of him if he thinks he is a computer tech. I was going to be an IT guy before I went into gas pump maintenance and that's how I know. If your bonded by a company for a million bucks that just for the company. If you own the company then that is a different story, but if you work for some place and they pay the bond then it doesn't cross over to daily side jobs. I am bonded as well for a million dollars. That is a basic minimal and I wasn't making fun of the man. But the technique the guy was trying to get work. He obviously needs to advertise in a paper or something other than Topix because people get burned here all the time. There are few IT jobs in Somerset and about the only way your going to get one is if someone dies or quits. And that rarely happens because of the few good jobs here. And skilled IT guys are usually young so they don't die.
