Full story: Columbus Dispatch

No one has characterized our heavy reliance on ash trees for suburban yard and street trees in te midwest (and elsewhere) as a "relentless march." While there are perfectly good reasons to regret the arrival and spread of emerald ash borers, they are not an army of invaders intent on pillage and territorial gain. They are insects increasing in population, with no intentions at all, and no geographical awareness-- just an instinct to disperse and a fortuitous juxtaposition with usable resources. Describing their advent in military terms is a political ploy, not a horticultural solution.

No matter how carefully it is planned, release of biological controls always has unforeseeable risks, especially in the long term that politics has generally abdicated responsibility for. A short term improvement may have long-term consequences. There are no pat answers or easy solutions to these problems in a society based on free movement of people and materials.

KRW: The parasitic wasps that are being released for EAB management are very small, and no, they do not sting. They do not look like the 'typical' yellow jacket or other insect that is commonly referred to as a wasp. The only way your backyard could be infested is if your backyard was infested first with EAB.

Daily Horoscope for December 31

Gemini

You'll need every ounce of patience today because even the best-laid plans could go up in smoke under the Full Moon lunar eclipse. It seems that certain people are doing their best to throw spanners in the works, and the more annoyed you become the more they'll goad you still further. If there's dissent in the ranks about how to spend New Year's Eve, you may decide to go your own sweet way and prove that you're an individual in your own right. But try not to let any bad feelings mar the celebrations. Have a fantastic night!
