Multiply the plight of these two people by tens of millions of Americans in the same sinking boat and you have the Bush legacy. As his "Poppy" would say, "It's a vision thing."

People are leaving NY and other overpriced urban/suburban areas in droves. I would have loved to have stayed in NY, but just could not have afforded it as a recent college grad. Prices are going up everywhere, but at least other areas of the country are still somewhat survivable...

Does the mattituk woman know that if she moves closer to her brentwood home her gas savings would be eaten up by high taxes?

It's getting scary out there. Moving closer to Brentwood may not be the answer even if it were a good time to sell a home.

Apparently, the Aesop story of the Ant and the Grasshopper was not part of 95% of disgusting Americans that are too occupied with thumping car radios...

I have little to no mercy for the 'working mother'. The time to start saving your money is when you got your first job - idiot!

The Bush administration has done absolutely nothing to curb the rising prices of oil, gas or anything else for that matter. They continue to give big oil corporations hundreds of millions in tax breaks, while they, the oil companies, are making billions of dollars in profits.

Outside of the government placing price controls (which has been tried and never worked), the price of nearly everything is dictated by supply & demand.

If you want the price of oil products to come down you either curb demand (drive less, drive smaller, turn down thermostat, etc.) or you increase supply.

"The Bush Administration", everyone's favorite punching bag for all that is "wrong" in the world, has proposed increasing supply by allowing oil companies to tap domestic sources of oil and stop sending dollars to the arabs.

Who do you think is blocking this from happening? Pelosi and Reid.

Oil companies companies reported an average of just over 5% profit margin last quarter. Does a 5% margin seem unreasonable compared to the margins seen in the tech, insurance, pharmaceutical, etc. industries? What if you or your employer doesn't turn a decent margin in their business?

The biggest problem with oil is that it effects nearly every other segment of our economy. From shipping to fertilizer, the price trickles down to the end consumer; you & me.

Do a little research and get informed about the facts before you start listening to the sound bites offered by your favorite politician and taking their words as the Gospel truth.

Have a great day !!!

Exactly how much oil is there in these mythical "domestic sources?" You don't know, oil companies don't know, no one knows. This concept of "domestic sources" is a total and complete red herring. It would allow US based oil companies to completely destroy sensitive environmental areas - all on *our* dime, by the way children, with their tax breaks for "exploration" - with 0% guarantee of success. It is a losing proposition on all counts, but it is a beautiful distraction device for the feeble-minded. Certainly takes their mind off the fact that reducing consumption - their own consumption - is the only way out of this mess, coupled with *alternative* fuels. Not more of the same.

Finding more oil (which is so incredibly doubtful that I have a brochure here for you all to buy the Brooklyn Bridge) would only delay any compelling need to develop alternative fuels and to conserve.

"Domestic sources." Snort. There's not more oil there, there are more problems there.

If and when the oil companies pay 100% of the cost to cleanly drill these areas, and guarantee XX barrels of production per day from each of the areas in which they eagerly and greedily seek to drill, should they be allowed to do it. Oh, they can't? Then why are the feeble-minded rushing to allow them to gamble with our money, our environment, our future?

Oh, I answered my own question, didn't I? It's the lack of brainpower that has lulled these simple folk into believing the "myth" of "domestic sources."

You are probably the same bunch of smackers who believed in "weapons of mass destruction" being stockpiled by Hussein. Bunch of sheep. Please don't try to run the country again. Your leader has already run it into the ground.

----------

As to the people in this article, God love 'em. Their story is repeated 100 fold. Starving when fully employed and/or in the midst of plenty. Long Island is like being seated at a huge banquet and having the plate grabbed away from you after one bite - to feed Al D'Amato and his spawn (as a for instance.) It's sad beyond redemption.

Also if she buys less oil per delivery she pays a higher rate per gallon. If she uses the same amount of oil she ends up paying more money. How is that smart??

unfortunately for every person out there struggling, there are several more who aren't....just look at today's kids = cell phones, ipod's, cars (and insurance) etc, obviously them and their parents aren't struggling even though they might claim to be.

Yes, I would have saved a grand total of four dollars if I had filled up my tank instead of ordering 200 gallons.

To all you Brentwood bashers-quick story-my mother lived in Brentwood/Bayshore for more than half her life-just moved to Bohemia-she's there two weeks and gets a statue stolen in front of her house-a statue that was never touched for the ten years she had it in Brentwood. There's bad element in every town!Life is what you make it.
