I guess the Union hands took a look at the want ads and changed their mind.
Plus, a strike would sure help out Farmers Market in Bloomfield. |

Funny that you think Unions give two-halfs a s.h*t about whether or not there is actual work - they just want to collect higher union dues. No employees will be making anymore REAL money if they strike. Unions: see "Foot bullet". |

Heck yes, the whole country is struggling to get by and the grocery union threatens a strike. Typical. We have given the unions the power to control, and as my old papp used to say, power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely. Shut em down, there is always Farmers Market, or Smiths.

"Attempting to head off a strike, about 300 workers employed by Safeway grocery stores in Farmington and Aztec agreed to extend a labor contract through mid-November after last-minute negotiations with corporate officials Saturday failed to reach an agreement."
Love the spin they put on this, shouldn't this say "Rather than losing their jobs altogether because they knew they would be replaced, about 300 workers employed by Safeway grocery stores in Farmington and Aztec agreed to extend a labor contract......... |

Henry Ford paid his workers 10 cents a day. He forced them to live in his personal slums, pay him 5 cents a day rent, and shop at the company store. Refusal to do this was immediate termination.
That's why the unions were formed. Corruption is much more often the tactic of the big conglomerate against the lowly worker. Anyone who thinks that a large corporation has your families personal best interests in mind is a fool. Good luck to the Safeway employees and as for the rest of you maroons, ask yourself this: Just how badly would a company have to use you, abuse you, cut your pay, require you to work on your days off, and not pay you for overtime before you would debate striking during a recession? Welcome to the Safeway employee's world. |

1 Saint you are either sadly misinformed for a flat out liar. In 1914 Ford started paying workers $5 per day and also shortened the work day from 9 hrs to 8 hrs a day. The pay rate was considerably larger than the nation average. People from all over the United States and Europe moved to Detroit to apply for jobs. Safeway workers should consider themselves lucky to have a decent job with a decent company rather than let greed cloud their judgment. Open your eyes a* hole unions have crippled the automotive industry. Union's are just like cancer. |
||||
What kind of abuse? Work on your day off.... what an injustice. I concure on the not paying overtime thing, though I doubt it is happening. |

1 Exactly! Like a strike was the alpha and omega of grocery shopping there. I've always found Safeway to be a bit higher than other chains and their selection was no better. I live in Abq and they're history there, not a store one according to their web site. |

1 Henry Ford was not near as ruthless as those in the meat packing industry and other businesses. After reading your last paragraph, I have to wonder why anyone would stick with a company that acts like this - provided it is true? Certainly these practices were in place LONG before the current economic situation came to be. |

You missed my point. This is America, no employee should be abused or maltreated just because "times are hard." I've been taken advantage of by callous employers before and it's just plain wrong. I guess you missed "Norma Rae." Without the protection of Unions, big corporations can pretty much do whatever they want, sweatshops, asbestos-filled working conditions, discrimination, unwarranted firings, nepotism, you name it. But you strike me as the kind of guy that wouldn't give a darn about his employees anyway, so I'll bet you wouldn't understand this. (Oh, and resorting to profanity is the last resort of a weak mind and a lost argument.) |

I'll add...I know the Safeway personel. They are wonderful, decent members of our community. To imply that they are greedy malcontents is an insult worthy of the mind of a small rodent....like a beaver.

Easy fellow AA meeting attendee.(Alcohol and ammo, I mean.. lol) You took the inverse of what I was saying. I meant that the union hands realized that they are lucky to be employed. Since their are no other dullard slacker jobs around, they decidied to stay. |

Side note, How is China? Got a standing job offer there, but have been rather concerned about being an expat in an evolving country. |

1 hillbilly, are you slamming the Safeway employees too? Safeway is known for giving good jobs to young people without experience. I can't count the number of decent teens I've seen working there as their first job. Add to that the overall pleasantness and courtesy of the entire staff, especially the pharmacists, and I'm completely on their side. They deserve decent, fair treatment and the state of the economy has NOTHING to do with it. |
|||
|
The Safeway staff has always been great to me. If they want to strike, let them strike. In the mean time, fire them all and hire willing employees that will work. Unions are what killed the auto industry...now they are (working) on everything else.
