If they are already willing to drive 50+ miles to a mall or Wal-Mart then probably not. They'll still get their money

You are the one that's dreaming. I am reciting facts. Facts from many many scholars like myself. I know more about the navajo people than all navajos under the age of 55. Only the older navajos know more than I. So go suck on an egg.

Feel free to harass the tweakers, because that's all the Biliganna's you'll see while there. Count your money twice at the counter and enjoy the warm feelings...once was enough for me.

Your comment is exactly the reason why businesses don't and won't want to come...plus there are enough personnel disputes already. A good place to start would be making Tribal Offices actually serve their intended purpose...like housing for instance. To bad that many young educated people don't want to come back, or when they do they get worn down by the overwhelming lack of accountability, graft, bickering and mismanagement.

My guess is the casino will only serve to multiply dollars at a little over 1:1, kinda like dollars to donuts or donuts to dollars, which is not much of a multiplier effect to build an economy by or buy stock with, considering another local example. What will multiply is the folks who get addicted to sitting for hours hearing the ding, dingaling of pennies while contributing to their own heart disease.

I'm glad to know not everyone thinks the way you do--and I'm sorry. I did my time and know what I came away with...a t-shirt that reads, "tag your it."

Now for the history lesson:
According to most recognized anthropologists, the Navajo were most likely the last wave of Asiatic people to cross the Bering Strait and emigrate south on the American continent. Along the way they found other tribes already living so they kept moving until they found the southwest.(BTW: 99% of these tribes encountered along the way were later eradicated by the white man and his diseases.)
The Pueblo:
Most the residents encountered by the Navajo in the SW were Pueblo tribes. They lived in small villages atop Mesas with their livestock and farms below. The wide open areas were mostly unclaimed so the Navajo settled in the open areas. They traded mostly meat from hunting and livestock for farm goods with the Pueblos. Today, most of the conflicts between the Navajo and Pueblos (Hopis) was and is a result of the white mans meddling so as to exploit (steal, actually) the resources (mainly coal and navajo aquifer water) from both tribes. The tribes fight while the white man steals their resources.
Other tribes.
When the white man entered the Uncompaghre Valley (present day Grand Junction, Montrose, Delta, etc), they killed or drove to the south, the Utes who lived in that valley. The Utes were forced to move south to the area that is now Ignacio, Cortez, where they encountered the northern edge of the Navajo who traveled and hunted there. Conflict arose and white men like yourself tend to overly exaggerate this for nefarious reasons.
The Apache is mostly early splinters of the more warlike Navajo, such as the Jicarilla, the Mescalero, etc. There is no notable conflict then or now.
The Mexican? There were conflicts with Mexicans because the Mexicans did raid, kill and enslave the Navajo. Any people worth their salt would respond in kind. And the Navajo did.
I repeat, the problems on the Rez started and ends with the white mans government and its concentration type control.
So scholar please explain to me where the Navajo got the land in the first place to call it theirs? You say the other tribes or pueblo's were there first occupying the land and the Navajo's came in and took it? This is exactly what you are saying the "white man" did and you are condeming them for it. In the times you are talking about it was a society of strength, the strongest won and did what they wanted with what was left. There was no race involved then and shouldnt be now. The Navajo were stronger than the other tribes/pueblos but werent strong enough to conquer the mass of the white man. Yes you are right the white man brought disease with them from other areas but so did others who traveled, most of these diseases were already in this area but the mass population pronounced it.
You say the prejudice is only shown in the first posts? But your twist of the facts shows your prejudice and hatred. We all should be above this prejudice and when others are acting this way we should stay above it. We are all people and we are all different in many ways, there is no need for any type of hate or prejudice. With this post I know I will see several posts about my ethnicity, which none of you know and it should matter. Thank you

Re-read the second paragraph: It's pretty clear to me the supposition; ie, the Navajo settled on open (repeat "open") land, meaning most likely that land was unoccupied, unsettled and unowned. They didn't "take" the land from anyone. The Pueblo Indians (Hopi and Zuni) that lived in the general area lived in little villages on top of the mesas and probably didn't care if the Navajos settled in the open lands because they never used any open lands except for small farms below the mesas. Which BTW, the Navajo left alone. The only conflicts were between the Navajo and the Ute. And this was because the whiteman either killed off or drove the Utes out of the Uncompahgre Valley into the Cortez area where the Navajos were already living.
