Newsday replacing some home delivery contractors -- Government,...

Fire the editorial board and all the writers and maybe then you will have a product that these people can deliver. Newsday is so out of touch and so arrogant they cannot see that their yellow journalism, along with constant writings in confilct with most of their customers views are killing the paper. Keep advocating and using this rag to push your agenda and I will see you all at the unemployment office!

They might want to replace some of the delivery people they have, too. We have a paperbox that says "Newsday" on it, but they still throw the paper on the ground.

why do you get it delivered when you can read it on line for free ?

This is the beginning of the end of Home Delivery. The paper obviously can't raise the price because then no one would buy it and with the cost of gas you can'
t afford to pay drivers to deliver a .50 cent product six days a week and a 1.50 product one day.. and since the ciculation bandits have left (got caught) they can't even cook the books anymore for th advertising revenue. Newsday will be available at your local 7-11.

How does newsday expect the papers to be delivered for less money with $4.00+ gasoline? Maybe we will see the return of bike riding paper boys.

What happened to the youth of America? Ohh yea they were replaced by illegal aliens. NO wonder Newsday supports illegal aliens.

They sholuld go back to having teenage age kids deliver the papers, just like the good old days. I had a newsday route from 1979 to 1983 and made myself around $35,000 dollars during that time. not bad for being a kid.

What a scam that was in hindsight. having 12 year olds shell out for in my case over 700 papers weekly and being responsible for collecting the money. If I recall, we did not even get break a on the cost, all our money was in tips

You are absolutely wrong...youth carriers had a definite profit structure built into the price of the paper not including tips. If you had a 100 paper route when you were younger you made at least 70 bucks a week plus tips..probably closer to 130 to 150 a week depending on tips. I spent 25 years in the circulation dept. mainly in the Huntington area...I probably know you.

When I was a kid I used to deliver the LI Journal ( a weekly similar to Penny Saver ). I was paid two cents a paper. By the time I stopped, I was delivering 600 papers a week for a whole $12. Then I started to deliver Newsday. When I delivered the weekly, I could deliver on Thursday, Friday and/or Saturday. Tough part of having a Newsday paper route was you had to work 7 days a week.

Perhaps that is why I learned to have a work ethic. You had to work, in the heat, in the rain, in the snow. You had to get the job done. There were no acceptable excuses.

I too have a teenager that I would be concerned about letting her deliver papers. But, I really wonder, are things really so much different then when we were kids? Are there really more psycos today then there were back then? Are we really bubblewrapping our kids too much?

When I delivered, we did get a break on the paper. I think we paid eighteen cents for the paper, and we charged twenty five. For that seven cents not only did we have to deliver it, but we also had to assemble the paper when there were extra inserts, or on Sunday. My customers really liked the fact that they got all their Sunday inserts delivered on Saturday, this way, al I had to do was wake up early enough Sunday to deliver the regular paper, and not assemble everything first.

The big money was in the tips.

The scam of course was that as a 13 year old, you were an independent contractor. You had to pay for the papers, even if you had not collected the money yet. I often had people that owed e money for three or four weeks. These were also the same people that would just give you like a dollar tip, so when they did pay once a week, you would get a dollar a week. When they didn’t pay you for a month, when they finally did pay you, they still only gave you a dollar (so an average tip of a quarter a week).

and now that tips are factored in to the carrier's base rate, those who constantly get greater tips, get a lower base. it's like telling a waiter you'll pay him $2.00 an hour because he provides great customer service and always gets a 20% tip. while the waiter who isn't good will get $3.00 an hour because he averages only 16% tips.

bingo. newsday wants its paper delivered for free or practically at no profit and illegals would certainly fit that bill. who wants to get up 364 days a year to work between 2am and 5:30am regardless of weather for practically $0 money You do this while ruining your car and paying record gas prices. We'll get better customer service by paying less is the same brain trust logic as when they moved Home Delivery Customer Service to the Phillipines.

Jane your right..I'm talking youth carriers 20 years ago. Even adult carriers back then made 1.10 a customer per week..guaranteed. The carriers techinally bought papers wholesale and sold them at retail..anything above and beyond that was theirs. At one time Newsday had 10000 thats right 10000 kids a day delivering newspapers. The circulation dept had to be doing something right back then. Ask almost any middle aged person on Long Island about their paper route. Hundreds of thousands of kids delivered over a 50 year period including some famous people like DR J.

Look out brothers and sisters. Thes is the beginning of the end. Just like in the nineties. Only now it will be dolan who will cut jobs and still get fat. Bring back 550 Stewart ave.

It depends when you delivered Newsday. I had 65 papers to deliver in the 50's when it was five cents per day and no Sunday paper.

Oh I forgot. It was a rag then and it is still a rag. Wait til Cablevision puts it under. (I hope)

i know, i worked in circulation too until HW, "the paper killer" axed most of the employees. and before Newsday did collections and carriers were responsible for collections, Newsday would resell the paper to deadbeats and the delivery person would be the one that would be stiffed again and again.

HW and RC..two of the most rotten snakes in the grass..funny huh HW is taken out of the building and RC should be going to jail.

it is ashame that the agents never got together to have a voice in all this. they should tell the idiots in management to deliver the papers themselves. but this probably would never happen because the agents cut each others throat to save their jobs....very sad
