I just heard about this and am very upset. It will certainly lower my property value and what will it do to my water supply. How can the city force us on their water system if we have our own weill? |

To whom it may concern..
The citizens of the tiny town of Fanning Springs, FL have been keep in the dark about a mayor who is trying to create a "legacy". Only 80-100 residents & less than 50 businesses along hwy 19/98 have just received their first letter/notice in reference to a wastewater collection & treatment facility that is schedule to be built in the fanning spring's area. A gathering of apx 80 citizens at a city hall meeting on August 25, 2009 at 1:00pm became very heated... Of the public that attended not one person was in favor of this and 75% or more had only heard of the plans the day prior to the meeting and had never been notified of the plans, only due to 1 or 2 citizens informing all the neighbors of the meeting otherwise very few people would have attended. and yet the mayor says.... "it is what you have been asking for" ?!?! Who ask for a wastewater treatment plant" The mayor announced the plans of spending $6.3 million dollars for this project... with currently only a $600, 000 grant from Community Development Block Grant has been awarded to Fanning Springs. 40 acres of land is under contract that is not even part of the city of Fanning Springs and this land is currently zoned residental and has homes on 3 sides of the property as close as 50'... not a single land owner anywhere around this proposed property was ever notified of these plans. Mayor Cherul Nekola announced that this project would have a proposed cost of $6.3 million "should" be paritally covered under "anticipated" 50/50 grants which would leave a balance of a $3 million loan to be paid off over a 40 year loan by the 80-100 home users + 50 ish business. however later when asked when this system might need to be upgraded, the mayor answer was 10 years. So in 10 years we will need another loan!?!?! and the Mayor also said there was nothing we could do about it..."it was a done deal!" in attendance was a single council member-Bob,(did not catch his last name) was completely against it for fear of where this will leave the city of Fanning Springs in financial trouble...How will the loan be repaid by apx 200 individuals & business... this is ridiculous what happens when the city can not repay it and the Mayor is long gone.. The next council meeting at the city hall in Fanning Springs is on Tuesday September 1 @ 5pm. Many of the citizens of Fanning Springs feel this is simply "abuse" of the system... and you can expect more people attending on Tuesday's meeting letting the council members know how they feel about this.. comments and suggestions greatly appreciated Thank you for your time. |

I am upset about this. I had just heard about it from a neighbor. I moved here to get away from city living. Now they are going to force us to pay to use city water that we don't want? Why are politicians always trying to fix things that aren't broken? Money, money, money. You'd think that with the state of the economy right now that spending (wasting) money would be a priority. If we here in Fanning Springs wanted city water, we'd let those greedy politicians know. I want to see the proof that we asked for a water plant! Let's see all those signatures from Fanning residents. If you can't produce the papers, then LEAVE US ALONE!
