Accused racketeer to
appear in court

The owner of Los Angeles' Numero Uno supermarket chain is set to be arraigned in federal court today on racketeering charges that include allegations that he ordered three slayings and bribed a city planning commissioner.

George Torres-Ramos, 50, of Arcadia, is due to answer to the charges this morning at the Roybal Federal Building.

Press reports have said that a prosecutor said her boss, City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo, pressured her to drop a 2001 misdemeanor case against Torres-Ramos.

His brother, Manuel Torres-Ramos, son Stevie Torres and five other defendants are also due in court today, including ex-planning commissioner Steve Carmona, who Torres-Ramos is accused of bribing, and another former planning commissioner, George Luk, who now sits on a city convention center commission and is accused of conspiring with Torres-Ramos.

The 59-count racketeering indictment unsealed following the brothers' arrest last month alleges George Torres-Ramos and his 53-year-old brother, who also lives in Arcadia, were involved in the killing of a worker at the 11-market Numero Uno chain.

Just another fine example of how government works. At every level you can find terrific examples of government helping their constituency. Just yesterday our president commuted the sentence of a convicted felon because he realized that the sentence was just not fair. I can just envision mass commutations of all such "unfair" sentences across this great nation. Where else but in government can you find such compassion. In fact, I could not think of a greater career than government service/politics.
Most places a felon (read that as a kid who made a poor choice) can't even get a decent job but in our Congress you needn't worry. You'll still get your pension. I'm sure the pay raises include pensions as well.

Mr. Torres is due in court in March 2009. The government is rounding up all the convicted dealers and killers from the neighborhood to tell stories about Mr. Torres. Don't believe all you hear just because the government says it. They want Mr. Torres' money for all the time they spent investigating an innocent man. Shame on them!

One day I went to #1, "San Pedro" grocery shopping & I remember being at the produce dept.
when I met Torres, talking crap & screaming at the employees infront of all the customers. He was complaining that the store look bad, that it was a mess. Then Torres went to the meat dept. and did the same thing. When I asked one of the employees who he was, the employee was scared when he told me, he said, he's the store owner, excuse me. It was like a movie from la India Maria. It make me angry to see this .... taking advantage of these employees that were just doing their job. They keep the store clean. Another thing I found out my next visit, was that they're not allowed to talk about him. What's with the mistery? I mean if he's guilty?(Then).
