my family owned the Buckhorn Saloon in McArthur Ca. In 1949, it was a small, Bar, and my Dad and Uncle added food to the menu, simple things like big hamburgers, and home cooked dinners. It was the place to unwind after work, and talk of the deer hunting, and fishing in the area, it was owned by Roy Blakley and Glenn Blakley.
In 1949 the ABC requested that out family to not allow Native americans to drink, alcohol, and I know my Dad found it hard to tell a customer no, due to racial reasons. We Moved Back to Napa Ca. and my father returned to being an operating engineer, and the place was sold to a Johnson Family. I was a child but I remember the hard winters there, and the Bell, family it was a good experience living there, and I think if I could I would go and work there, it was a nice place. |

To some guy in Chester: It's the only bar in town. There is all demographics of people, loggers, tweakers, farmers, cowboys, mexicans, indians, blue collar workers. How can anyone discrimate against any of them and still stay in business?
Loretta Ertl, The Buckhorn was opened by a man by the name of Rainwater in 1935. In the early 60's was owned by Jack and Heilda Marymee, who divorced, then Heilda married Skip Cook who then operated it. They sold to George & Ellen Greer in 1966, who then sold it to Gerald Pope in 1970.He sold to Wally Link,(Fred & Pam Chapman). They sold in 1988 to Mike & Terry, Jerry & Linda Chandler. Jerry bought out Mike in 1991. Jerry & Linda then sold to Fred Chapman & his young wife who you bought it from. |

The 1935 original owner's name was Stormy Rainwater.

Yes, everywhere used to be a nice place to live and enjoy. The Buckhorn was a great place to visit with the horseshoe designed bar, you could visit with friends across the orther side of the room. Dance, have a drink and play cards all night and have the crumie pick you up in the morning and go out in the woods as a logger and work all day. Yes, they could enjoy having a good time with friends and family. We used to live in town and would always go to the Buckhorn before going to the Inter-Mountain Fair, coming up this next Labor Day Weekend, 90th year having the fair, it was the place to meet up with old friends.
If drugs have been coming into the Buckhorn who is the fault of that? There isn't any work, or college, you have to move out of town for college not much future for the young people that have growen up in that society. Drugs have changed our hole society, and we all look the other way because of the all mighty dollar. The forest service has stopped the logging in that area, wood mills have closed, effecting the hole community. Tourisum is the echo friendly why to make a living now. Yes, the town of Mc Arthur is a beautiful place to live, but bring bags of cash with you because there are not to many jobs, only seasonal. There is good and bad in every town we have to know evail and the good will win hands down. See you at the fair, bring cash, the 4-H and FFA kids need money for their projects that are sold at the fair Monday morning, Labor Day! |

The Buckhorn was a great place to go to in the 80's when Pam and Freddie owned it. Loretta was great too. I love their BBQ's. They made it lots of fun in a place that didn't have much to do!
