Dance studios are a racket.....extorting money from Grandma and Grandpa because some business woman says little knock kneed Sally is the next Ginger Rogers.

No more so than T-ball or soccer when there is no score keeping, no try-outs, just come and play. It is a form of exercise for your child and goodness knows more of our children need exercise.

True enough, Mema. It's also a great way to help our children accept each other, find things in common and develop other skills and virtues.

While it is true that only 1-3% of dance students actually go on to do something dance-related as adults, no price can be put on the confidence and self-esteem that can be built in the dance studio.

I read an article recently stating that, in today's tough job markek, creative people are getting the jobs. Dance classes boost creativity.

As the owner of a small dance studio (with a website that needs some major updating, lol) I can say that I don't force anything out of anyone. I open my doors and the people come to me. I offer a service that people have been more than willing to buy for almost 12 years. Even in this poor economy and without my having to advertise, people have come crawling out of the woodwork to get into one of my programs in September.

If you have ever enjoyed watching an episode of So You Think You Can Dance, loved a classic musical like Singing in the Rain, gone to see a theater show in your neighborhood, or aren't afraid to get up and dance at a wedding, chances are you feel diffrently about dance studios than some others.

I would say the real waste of money is on the video game systems that take kids away from physical activities and reading books...today's kids are too overweight as it is.

I don't think many parents think their kids are going to be pros, any more than parents of kids who take gymnastics or piano lessons do. It's just a nice activity that gets kids exercise and social time.

I'd have to agree that dance and cheer help a young girl's self esteem and general confidence well past the time they stopped participating.

Exactly. Parents don't let their kids play hockey, football, baseball, soccer, or any other sport, thinking they're going to be pros. Instead, these things are good activities in their own right - even though a miniscule percentage will go on to make a living at it.

Absolutely! It would have been nice if we could have afforded dance or gymastics for our daughter (3 of 4 boys were in Little League) but she did learn clarinet (I know it didn't satify the 'little dancer' born in her...) In high school, she was a cheerleader, active with the 'jazz ensemble'(song/dance) as well as 2 of her brothers -and they enjoyed it.
Community service organizations are great too. My brothers and sisters were involved with 4-H as kids. Two of my sons were active with the fire dept.
Let the kids get involved in something, get them inspired, help them dream... just don't overdo it. Having time pursuing family activities may even be more important to their esteem and development.

I can't vouch for all dance studios, but, I can hoestly say that Angel gets her kids into doing community service. They are required to do parades, they raise money for the Salvation Army, donate their time and talents to nursing homes, for local charities, and various organizations around town. That in itself is a life lesson that will last them a lifetime....learning to give back to your community and to others.....so much better than kids hanging on the street corners with nothing to do but get into trouble....

I agree with all the posts regarding physical exercise vs. video games for children. I'm also a believer in kids participating in community service.

In my community students are required to perform several hundred hours of community service as a condition of high school graduation. Does PA have such a requirement, and do you think they should?

I don't think so....but, I think that it is a really good idea...they do, however, have to do a senior project to graduate...many times that has to do with community service....

No, cretin ... sorry. No pictures of overweight children -- just little two-headed anomalies like I HOPE Satanstar will get to take home with her after she delivers her latest evil spawn.
And as far as dance -- So You Think You Can Dance is the most boring, useless show on television ... and I think that anyone who makes an "occupation" out of some low-level, obscure little neighborhood dance studio simply couldn't cut it in the academic (brains!) department! Takes no smarts to dance! LOL, LOL, LOL!

Right! Kind of like "paying it forward", learning to look out for the needs of others. It's so great to see these kids step up and give a hand in their small way. Angelstar will someday hear someone say, "Thank you!"

Cretin? Wow you have balls. I'm not the idiot posting brainless photos of deformed babies on internet forums and wishing ill upon the unborn. I never had a problem with you until that post yesterday, it angered me, regardless of whom it was directed at, and I suppose that was intent. Your posts used to seem fairly well thought out and well written, whether I agreed with them doesn't really matter. However, yesterday you crossed a line that should never, ever be approached. IMO ~KP

Daily Horoscope for January 8

Scorpio

Self-worship is easy and obvious, today. The real prize is when you turn from the mirror to see that others think just as highly of you. Take in all this love and amazement, and store some away for lean times in the future. Someone may give you an unexpected compliment later in the day, but don't let them know that it caught you off guard. After all, you still have your reputation as an egomaniac to uphold!
