Hmmm, a community wants to maintain the beauty of their area by limitin' the amount of time signs can be posted, so they attach a refundable fee to the postin' of the signs.

And the ACLU thinks that's a violation of the first amendment?

Must be a slow year for that organization, they haven't anythin' better to worry about.

'It's a violation of the First Amendment,'' said attorney Jeff Gamso, legal director of the ACLU of Ohio, which is based in Cleveland.''You can't charge people to put up a sign in their own yard for the right to speak on their own property.''

The ACLU should mind their own business! If you want to protect our rights, then go to Washington and tell Mr Bush and congress to open the oil fields to bring down gas prices. At least if you pay for a sign, after the elections we won't be seeing signs for weeks on end ,in open fields and such,in fact if city or county workers have to remove signs 1 week after voting is done, then the committe or offical who's sign they took down should be fine $5.00 a sign and all money's are then divided between schol districts.

I'm very surprised at the majority of these comments here. That lets me know what kind of country I really live in.

Heartbreaking how many Amarecians can't bring themselves to support an organization whose sole mission is the defence of the Bill of Rights.

Probably because the Bill of Rights covers a whole lot of behaviors that drive the radical right absolutely nuts. But the ACLU has very often come to the aid of the radical conservatives who hate them so everytime the rad-cons find thier rights genuinely violated. It's a non-partisan organization. Anyone who actually follows the ACLU (and not the rediculous caricature of it painted by Rush, Hannity and Savage) knows this.

It is indeed a violation of freedom of speech to charge people a fee for displaying political signs on their lawn.

Thank God for the ACLU. Defending us, even when doing so is unpopular. That's true patriotism.

How can you possibly print "ACLU, a non-PARTISAN, non-profit organization" with a straight face? Shame on you, BJ.

Tell me, has the ACLU ever come to the defense of anyone who wanted to hang their laundry in the front yard? You need a history lesson. The ACLU was founded by communists.

And the sad thing is Barry, they would defend a small minded person like you and your ilk (wether you want it or not). Just ask your hero, Rush.

Indeed it is sad, when groups like NAMBLA recieve kudos from the ACLU. Toldedo Tim, maybe you should get of Toledo and broaden your mind a bit. It's you who need help (whether you want it or not). Check out this link you intolerant dimwit; ironic you castigate me for exercising my right to free speech.

The signs I saw in Silver Lake last election cycle were of winners. Why do these people make such ludicris comments? Sorry folks, I'm no lawyer lover but I'm afraid the ACLU is right on this one. Why should I have to pay five bucks to put a dang sign in my yard? Bernie needs to do the right thing here. The sign fee needs to go.

"American Civil Liberties Union is stepping in to defend a group that advocates sex between men and boys against a lawsuit brought by the family of a murdered 10-year-old."

Hey Ducolax,

Actions are affirming concepts; play semantics, call it what you want, but if it quacks like a duck, it's probably a duck. I get it though, because the ACLU is opposed to drug testing, you mindlessly side with them. Have you considered rehab?

The death of common sense in our country both appalling and saddening.
