Give teens something to do

Full story: Vallejo Times-Herald

I am a student at Jesse Bethel High School in Vallejo. Since winter is right around the corner, most teenagers will be forced to stay in the house due to lack of activities.

for many years youths have grown up here in vallejo WITHOUT what you are asking for. most have grown up to be responsible citizens and again WITHOUT what you are dreaming of. how did they do it? most didn't go to other cities either. how did they do it? looks like another that wants to sit and whine. ever hear of asking your folks, or were they some of the ones that just sat and whined as you?

you could paint over your graffiti, you could pick up the trash left by your friends, you can put down your cell phone, or you can sit around smoke pot and complain

In a free market economy, the secret is find a need and fill it.

Sounds like you think there is a profit to be made and a service to be provided at the same time.

Suggestion: convince a business person to make the necessary investment or find a way to make it yourself.

Make this idea successful and the future is your's to design.

Yeah, let's turn Kentwig into another melee place with guns and knives. NO THANKS! Quit your whining and go figure out something consytructive to do instead of expecting someone else to PROVIDE it for you. Soooooo sorry you are bored, waaaaaaa. I hear there's lots to do in other cities. Go try them.

Did you ever consider what causes kids to create a "melee place with guns and knives"? Boredom!!!

Let me see... I grew up in Benicia - rumored to be one of the most boring towns around.

I've been bored...

"melee place with guns and knives"? nope, I never did that.

It takes more then boredom to move onto melee, guns &/or knives.

Bullsquat. It's because their parents are idiots too. Poor parenting = kids in trouble and causing trouble. Get a grip.

Well put them to work then. Oh yeah, that wont happen, their parents are too ignorant to push that. It's not the taxpayer's fault theyre bored! Why is it society's fault and not the "bored" kids

Many of us grew up in Vallejo when walking downtown with family members was a regular Friday night event. Vallejo was safe, clean, and a pleasant town, devoid of hipsters, druggies, and trouble makers. Unfortunately, those days are gone!

Jeesh, why can't kids just get stinkin drunk and drive around cruising like we did in high school?

Seriously though, I went to watch my nephew's band play at the Napa Boys and Girls club about a year ago and was really impressed with what I saw. The center was full of high school aged kids, but they were all getting along, playing games, listening to music and eating food from the cantina. PARENTS were there too! They had a battle of the bands that night, and I saw no signs of trouble from anyone. The key was ADULT supervision.

You rang… I think I have the answer to your issue, Dennise, and thank you for caring.
There’s a really cool teen center in the town of Petaluma. Check this website out.

Forget having fun kid. You need to focus on a good paying job to help pay down the trillions of dollars you owe.

Let's all face it Vallejo is G-H-ETTO!!

Nobody in their right mind is going to want to make any sort of monetary investment in some sort of rec center for the youth. Sad but true. I keep holding out hope for Vallejo to turn the corner and become a somewhat nice place. Not gonna happen. The things I have witnessed growing up in this city make me not want to raise a family here. On the other hand I seemed to turn out alright I guess. Probably because I had parents that actually cared about me.

Let's just make sideshows legal!!! Then you kids will have something to do.

In the summer there are soccer games in Washington Park almost every day. Nobody outside the group organizes them or pays for them or advertizes them. People who like to play get together and have fun.

The word I object to in this is GIVE. Take responsibility for yourself and find what you like to do then find others who like it as well and do something for yourself.

Denisse, I commend you for being creative in looking for solutions. You can and should try to find business leaders willing to work with you. Perhaps start with the Chamber of Commerce. In the meantime, I would suggest looking into volunteer activities. You'll likely learn valuable skills, including event organizing and other group activities. GOOD LUCK!

Dennise! thank you so much for your letter! Lack of youth outlets is a real problem facing many towns.

This is a big issue in Napa and the youth in Napa are getting together to do something about it. We are also working with some people in Vallejo and they are starting to form a group in Vallejo to address these issues. E-mail at alexshantz@gmail.com. I’d love to help you get connected to some people that are doing something about this crap.

I guess when everyone wins a trophy for showing up for a game... and parents go broke giving their off spring everything they want, I guess it's predictable for a kid to tell a City in bankruptcy, with 12% unemployment, elderly stuggling to survive, people loosing their homes because some mortgage slime convinced them to use their house as a bank, homeless children, crime at an all time high... screw those things... let's spend money the City doesn't have so bored kids can have playdates.... sure.. why not?

Dennise, I wish there were safe hangout places in vallejo or activity centers, but the ghetto people in vallejo always mess things up. Just drive through downtown vallejo at midnight and you can see most of the trouble makers loitering, dealing drugs, and walking with their hoods over their heads, long white T-shirts that look like skirts, and their pants draggin on the ground.
There should be a curfew implemented for ghetto people.
