Mayor Suddenly Resigns During City Meeting

EUSTIS, Fla.-- There are a lot of questions being asked in Eustis Friday morning, after the city's mayor suddenly quit. Eustis Mayor Scott Ales walked out of a city commission meeting Thursday night without warning.

The Eustis City Manager does not know why Ales quit, either. Eyewitness News has been speaking with people who live in Eustis Friday morning and many say they are disgusted.

Ales was originally appointed to serve as the Mayor of Eustis in January of 2009 and now, less than eight months later, he is out the door.

Ales' unexpected resignation came in the middle of Thursday night's city commission meeting.

Eyewitness News found out the board was discussing city codes when the mayor recused himself from the discussion involving the First Green Bank. Ales sits on the bank's Board of Directors.

As soon as that discussion wrapped up, for some unknown reason, Ales announced that he was leaving and walked out of the meeting. One resident said chaos erupted after the mayor left the meeting.

Deana Donovan has lived in Eustis for five years and was speechless when Eyewitness News reporter Mark Boyle told her that Scott Ales is no longer the city's mayor.

"When I tell you the mayor just up and quit last night, what do you think about that?" asked Boyle.

"That's…he up and just walked out, and quit? Wow, I don't know what to say," said Donovan.

At this point, there is no word on why Ales stepped down only a few months after he got the job.

"It kind of leaves us in a lurch. Now what? Now what do we do? We have to go out and vote now, we have to find somebody else to do the job he's been doing. It's kind of like a parent taking off," said Donovan.

Eyewitness News has learned that the city's Vice Mayor will step in as Ales' replacement for the time being.

An explanation from Ales is expected later Friday.

I invite anyone that is even slightly curious why I resigned to simply call me. My number is in the phone book and all over the web. I didn't resign after months on the job, I have been fully engage with matter concerning the City of Eustis and the surrounding area for 4 and 1/2 years. It is time for someone else to take a turn in the barrel. I resigned for personal and family concerns, BEFORE Senator Martinez did!

I'm a retired Gulf war vet hard to understand on phone do to shooting wound but would be interested in knowing more as to why . Will take you at word it being personal family concerns.
As to Senator Martinez think he has other reasons.

There be theories as to the "why" until the cows come home, long after Ales is exhausted on the explanation. I just find it disappointing when, after an oathe is taken before God and Country, Ales can just pick up his toys and go home - full knowing the obligations he made to the taxpayers. Military members take an oathe too...and look what happens if they "quit".

My official obligations were,

Scott M. Ales, Commissioner Elect, as a citizen of the City of Eustis, of the State of Florida and of the United States of America, do you hereby solemnly swear or affirm that you will support the Constitution of the United States, the Constitution of the State of Florida, and the Charter of the City of Eustis; that you are not a member of any organization or party which believes in or teaches, directly or indirectly, the overthrow of the United States by force or violence, and do not so believe or counsel yourself, so help you God?

Armed Forces oath:

I,(NAME), do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God.

You'll notice the difference between the two, "according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice.

Apples and Oranges

That is why Senator Martinez, Governor Palin, and a laundry list of both Republicans and Democrats have resigned throughout the history of the USA and not been sent to jail.

No matter Mr. Ales - you made a commitment to the taxpayers. You will always be known as a "quiter" in Eustis. Not much credibility here amongst the working class, and I'm sure you don't care. You can justify your actions until you are blue in the face and nobody's buying your story. You made a rash decision at the spur of the moment, and have been justifying it with BS ever since.

Btw - this childish action will cost the taxpayers, your neighbors, and people you were once committed to, over $15,000 - let's see you put your money where your mouth is.

I will submit to your assessment. Yes, I quit. No reason to respond on any issues further because as you say, it cannot be justified to anyone. I'll take that and learn from it. You wouldn't know it because it is easier to assume than take the time to research something before making statements but I did put my money where my mouth is. I hope this inspires you to serve on a commission or council somewhere. Every community needs people of dedication to help in this troubling economic time. Maybe you could make a real difference.
