Jodene Louise Aubrey, a passenger of one vehicle involved in an illegal street race that claimed the life of a 9-year-old girl and seriously injured her mother, was arrested in Crescent City Tuesday morning.
According to officials with the California Highway Patrol, 32-year-old Aubrey was arrested without incident at 8:51 a.m. as she was riding in another vehicle on Pike Street.
She was taken into custody on a bench warrant related to charges of possession of a controlled substance, possession of a hypodermic needle and driving an unlicensed vehicle -- all misdemeanor allegations.
She was transported to the Humboldt County jail Tuesday afternoon, where she remains on $20,000 bail, the Humboldt County Sheriff's Office reported.
Authorities began searching for Aubrey following the Oct. 6 street race, which took place on State Route 299. According to CHP information, Aubrey was one of three passengers riding in a silver Mustang that was being driven by Anthony Flores.
Flores, 19, was allegedly racing Jason Whitmill, 31, when Whitmill's 2004 Pontiac Sunfire clipped a Chevrolet Tahoe that was driving the same direction. The Sunfire and the Tahoe drove off the road, and the Tahoe hit a utility pole, leaving the Tahoe driver seriously injured, and killing her 9-year-old daughter.
According to a court document, shortly after the race, Aubrey took possession of the Mustang, telling Flores she would “take care of” the damage to the vehicle.
When the Mustang was found six days after the collision, the vehicle had been spray-painted black.
Flores now faces a manslaughter charge and Whitmill, who was allegedly driving under the influence at the time, faces a murder charge.
However, District Attorney Paul Gallegos has said he has decided not to charge Aubrey as an accessory.
