I am the sister who has to explain to her kids why you talk so weird and were in jail. I am the school friend who turns away sadly, seeing how much you have changed and can no longer relate. I am the mother who had to pay your lawyer fees. I am the child in therapy, who doesn't tell you to your face how I really feel, or if I do, you don't bother to remember.

I am sad, and arguing with you is just my trying to say what I should have said to those who are gone and I cannot say it.

You guys are all posting old studies, the newer and more technologically accurate tests and research contradict what you posted. Do some new research guys.

Just because you argue in numbers, doesn't make you right.

Ok, i'll identify myself. My name is Bob Hopton, and I am a Deputy Sheriff with the Tehama county sheriff's department. I have been a law enforcement officer for over 19 years. Among other duties, I work with the Avoid the Five DUI task force, which is funded by the state Office of Traffic Safety.(OTS)

We conduct monthly checkpoints and roving patrols, for the purpose identifying and apprehending drivers who are driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs (23152a/b of the vehicle code) We are required by the grant to operate during every three day holiday weekend.

During this holiday weekend, we conducted two roving patrols, on friday May 28th and Saturday May 29th. I personally made one DUI arrest on a female riding a Harley/Davidson motorcycle, who admitted to be coming from the WHEE festival. Riding with her was a male riding a motorcycle/sidecar rig. He came back to the scene while I was giving field sobriety tests, was contacted by other officer's there, and was arrested for DUI. He met the female at the WHEE and was going back to her residence with her.

I was present when a male sleeping in a black vehicle was arrested for being under the influence of Marijuana, to the point he could not care for his safety. He was extremely confused and disoriented and admitted to being on the way to the WHEE festival, but was from out of town, and couldn't find it.

I was working and heard radio transmissions from another Sheriff's Deputy as he contacted and arrested one other person for DUI. The reason this vehicle was contacted was because it had run off the road on riverside avenue near the WHEE festival and became stuck in a ditch.(but I guess that doesn't make them a danger to the public)

I was present when a female was stopped and eventually arrested on Hwy 99w near the entrance of Friendly acres mobile home park. She was from out of town and admitted she had just come from the WHEE festival. She was wearing a green wristband from the festival. I was personally present during the field sobriety tests, and agree with the conclusion of the arresting officer that she was under the influence of marijuana to the point her driving was impaired.

As far as the rest, jail booking logs and patrol logs are public information, you can go to the Sheriff's department at the corner of hwy 36 and antelope blvd and ask to see them. They will give you names, dates and charges of the arrestees, but no specific information on the location of arrest that I recall. That should give you the rest of the "credibility" you desire.

There you go. Five arrests that were directly related to the WHEE and coming from or going to it, that I have personal knowledge of. Plus my name. Hope that is enough credibility and lack of anonymity for you.

so where is your facts to disprove any of it ?...ok heres what the A.M.A. has to say now after so many years of saying marijuana has no medical use

Recommendation (adopted AMA policy)
The following statement, recommended by the Council on Scientific Affairs, was adopted as AMA policy by the AMA House of Delegates at the 2001 AMA Annual Meeting:
The AMA calls for further adequate and well-controlled studies of marijuana and related cannabinoids in patients who have serious conditions for which preclinical, anecdotal, or controlled evidence suggests possible efficacy and the application of such results to the understanding and treatment of disease; (2) The AMA recommends that marijuana be retained in Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act pending the outcome of such studies.(3) The AMA urges the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to implement administrative procedures to facilitate grant applications and the conduct of well-designed clinical research into the medical utility of marijuana. This effort should include: a) disseminating specific information for researchers on the development of safeguards for marijuana clinical research protocols and the development of a model informed consent on marijuana for institutional review board evaluation; b) sufficient funding to support such clinical research and access for qualified investigators to adequate supplies of marijuana for clinical research purposes; c) confirming that marijuana of various and consistent strengths and/or placebo will be supplied by the National Institute on Drug Abuse to investigators registered with the Drug Enforcement Agency who are conducting bona fide clinical research studies that receive Food and Drug Administration approval, regardless of whether or not the NIH is the primary source of grant support.(4) The AMA believes that the NIH should use its resources and influence to support the development of a smoke-free inhaled delivery system for marijuana or delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) to reduce the health hazards associated with the combustion and inhalation of marijuana.(5) The AMA believes that effective patient care requires the free and unfettered exchange of information on treatment alternatives and that discussion of these alternatives between physicians and patients should not subject either party to criminal sanctions.
is the American Medical Association also just a bunch of potheads ?.. all this wont matter in a few years anyways .. and DUI's are DUI's i am a smoker and agree get them off the road, i didn't drive while taking doc prescribed narcotic pain killers, why would you drive after useing marijuana ? some people just don't have common sense

AMA meeting: Delegates support review of marijuana's schedule I status
Houston -- It is time to re-examine whether marijuana should be legally categorized as a schedule I drug, the AMA House of Delegates said at its Interim Meeting.

The goal of such a review is to facilitate "the conduct of clinical research and development of cannabinoid-based medicines and alternate delivery methods," says the newly adopted house policy.

The current scheduling "limits the access to cannabinols for even research -- it is very difficult," said AMA Board of Trustees member Edward L. Langston, MD, a Lafayette, Ind., family physician. "We believe there should be a scientific review of cannabinols in the treatment of pain and other issues.... We support research on the use of cannabinols for medical use."Scientists researching marijuana's medical properties must get the Drug Enforcement Administration's approval every step of the way, and the sole legal national source of cannabis for scientific purposes is the National Institute on Drug Abuse. A number of bureaucratic hurdles apply to cannabis research that do not impede other drug investigations, said a report from the AMA Council on Science and Public Health.

Previously, the AMA called for more medical research on marijuana but balked at questioning its placement in the DEA schedule. The science council originally recommended retaining marijuana's schedule I status, but delegates objected in reference committee testimony."Schedule I is very appropriate for heroin and other noxious substances that have no place in medicine, but cannabinoids are useful drugs," said Melvyn Sterling, MD, a palliative care doctor and California Medical Assn. delegate who spoke on his own behalf. "There is compelling research that cannabinoids are helpful in treating the spasticity associated with multiple sclerosis and in persistent nausea associated with chemotherapy, and they may have other uses yet undiscovered. Why are they undiscovered? Because it's a schedule I drug."

Though delegates called for reviewing whether marijuana fits into schedule I, the house's new policy said the recommendation "should not be viewed as an endorsement of state-based medical cannabis programs, the legalization of marijuana, or that scientific evidence on the therapeutic use of cannabis meets the current standards for a prescription drug."

Last year, the American College of Physicians adopted policy supporting a review of marijuana's schedule I classification. By this article's deadline, the DEA had not responded to American Medical News inquiries on the AMA's action. The Food and Drug Administration cited an interagency memo reflecting policy of the DEA, the Office of National Drug Control Policy and the FDA stating that the agencies "do not support the use of smoked marijuana for medical purposes."

Thank you for being forthcoming. If indeed the above is true it now appears that the Sheriff was either misinformed or intentionally mislead the public in what might appear to be pandering to the voters. Consequently my concerns pertaining to his worthiness for re-election have increased. It is nonetheless not unusual to have such a number of incidents when the patrol efforts are hightened and an added several thousand folks come to town don't you think. All in all the event was peaceful, and with the exception of the incidents you cite without negative consequences.
