Letcher County is a beautiful place but unfortunately pain pills have have taken over not only the younger generation but also the middle age generation. With all the deaths in the coal mines,I think the inspectors are not making enough rounds to ensure the safety of the mines and there would be less deaths if these mines were inspected on a weekly basis. The efforts from UNITE to clean up the drug trade is admirable and I hope they continue to make Letcher County a safe place to raise a family without druggies or drugs being prevalent. My heart goes out to all the survivors of the mine traumas. God Bless Your Police Force!!

I agree with you wholeheartedly. My solution is to create a "drug offender registry" for those who sell illegal drugs so we can brand them with a big Scarlett Letter D!

I come to Kentucky once a year to visit my family in letcher county its A shame to see the mountains top gone when I come back there,it looks worse every time I come in,
its just not the mountains and the beauty the water is ruined homes are being damaged from the blast that goes on top of these mountains and people are so greedy about the Coal they have no compassion for the people there how it is hurting the people.
drugs is big problem in letcher county but first need to clean out the crooks that is in office in whitesburg first before they can get rid of the drugs.

Wouldn't be Donald Trump by any chance, lol...
Hi Cindy,
I was in the Navy in the early 60's with a fellow with the family name of Combs, who was from Eastern KY.

We were together either in the Reserve Fleet in Philadelphia or the USS Fremont, home ported out of Norfolk Virginia. Between early 1961 and late 1964.

Or it could have been boot camp at the Great Lakes Facility...

Let me know if that rings a bell.

Sorry I can't help you with your original question...

To Ronnie:

I'm not sure if you really talk like that or if you think that is how us "fellers" from Kentucky speak.

I was born and grew up in Jenkins. I have written a book about eastern Kentucky. It is all fiction and hopefully fun. You can review the book on www.amazon.com Just type in: "An Eruption of Decadence". If you are looking for a book to enhance your life - This ain't it. Dick

Elbert was my great grandfather. My grandfather was John Paul Vanover, and my father was John Paul Vanover JR. My father was born in McRoberts.

I was raised near Blackey, Kentucky, hated every minute of it, left as soon as I could and never returned. Different reasons... no future, ignorant people living on welfare not attempting to further their lives...not everyone...but certainly the majority. And KCoNiMi, we both know that IS how people talk "in the hills."

Margo, You must be speaking of your own relatives and yourself! There are many very intelligent, talented, motivated people living in that area. You may not have been able to make a living there, but that says a lot about you, doesn't it? The more intelligent folks of that area wouldn't disparage you for being as ingnorant and as biased as you are. Glad you left.. hope you don't return.

If I am correct the name is Alan Stump and he had purchased it from a Hylton man.

Margo, I'm glad you're gone too. When we get rid of a few more like you who run and hide rather than try to address our problems, maybe we'll make some progress.
