The so called most powerful Nation on the Planet can not feed or educate it's children, does not have the cash to pay for gas for it's Police officers, makes a substantial portion of it's population live without health coverasge and makes women sleep in parking lots on California. But we have the best aircraft carriers, submarins and rockets. Too bad these can not win and finish a war against even a 3rd world nation that does not have an air force or a navy! I bet the politicians and strategists in the capital of the next superpower will be watching this with interest. Time to learn Mandarin, folks !

Dude, cops get free gas to drive to the donut shop. That's already a big benefit. Normal people like myself on the other hand have to drive to our $200k/year jobs.

I think it's unconscionable that they get ANY pay raise considering their salary comes from local taxpayers who are being squeezed by rising energy and food costs.
Shame on any municipality who thinks their employees are more special than any hard working citizen.

So what? I earn less and less every year at a government job because they can't afford to pay university positions. A 2% raise does very little with the way inflation has been lately. Last year we got a 0% raise. This isn't a recent trend either, but a 10 year trend.

That is not a totally bad story. Those of us in manufacturing are lucky to see 1 or 2% a year in raises.
5% for any wage earner is good. Nevertheless, this gas issue is going to pound many middle and lower class folks.

I'm sorry, but I would love to have a 5% raise right now. Our department has had to settle for 2% for the past few contracts.

Different perspectives.

5% is nothing to turn your nose up at, for some people thier employer caps raises at 2-3%. SO take the money and put in your gas tank like the rest of us.

Everyone else is driving slower and most cops are still cruising along at 75-80mph. Most also leave their cars running when they are on a detail.

Nobody is giving out raises right now.

maybe the officers should start turning their cars off when they are not in them. i see far too many cops leave their cars on while they go in places such as the court house gas station etc. i saw one the other day leave his car running, go into a little restaurant, order food and then sit inside for thiry minutes eating. maybe thats the reason they spend so much on gas. give turning the car off a try and it might save some money.

Hey, 5% is well above the norm for most people so I hope they aren't crying over that.

Shame mine people who don't think police should get raises. Do you have bullets shot at you in your job? With what cops get paid today it is a wonder anyone would be a cop. Hopefully if you ever need a police officer I hope one is still available to take your call because at the rate of pay they get and the cost to live they may look elswhere for employment. And no police do not get free gas they pay like everyone else. And if you think they a spoiled brats you try and do their job I dare you.

Are you kidding? You think cops and other public servants don't suffer during these times as well? Keep paying cops low wages and you'll see that the more qualified and educated officers will go private and you'll be left with the GED and high school diploma kids of the world. Of course it'll be people like you who'll bitch and moan that the government isn't hiring quality individuals or providing top of the line training for it's employees.

It's a shame that there are people out there like you who believe that cops and public servants should be paid slave wages. We've got families and mortgages also.

Why not give them the same raise most are getting in this Country.... lay some off! You hired them with promise by the Bush administration to fight terror... what are they really doing other than helping write tickets and the occasional 'Real' call for help.
