1 "Among the unresolved issues are wages, health coverage and policies to protect nurses from H1N1 flu." do nurses who make staggering incomes from what I've heard, think they're immune to the recession?? |

1 you are right on and i'm not even a nurse... nurses worked hard for their education and deserve to be rewarded. ceo's, cfo;s, vp's, etc make a heck of a lot more money with more flexibility and no one complains... walk in the shoes of a nurse and then see if you complain about the pay. |
Being compensated for their skills is not the issue. Being overly compensated regardless of the experience or quality of the work is. In the real world, non union, you are paid in accordance to the value you bring to the organization. more value more pay. With a union this is not the case.
Whether you perform at a high level or perform poorly the compensation is the same. We are all overpaying because of this situation. |

Nurses make pretty good money, they make wages that are comparable to engineers. Engineers don't have unions to protect them during economic downturns, engineers get laid off all the time and have to move continuously. They need to reeducate themselves on new technology. Engineers have a lot more schooling than nurses do. Bachelors degrees for engineers just doesn't get the job and people now have to get their masters to be competitive. If engineers were in the medical field they would be doctors or biomedical engineers. You can't compare nurses to doctors, just like there is no comparison between nurses and engineers. I respect nurses for their education and hard work, but the knowledge base for engineers is much higher. The work may be equally stressful depending on the kind of engineer you are or who you work for, the same goes for nursing. An engineering technician may be at the same level as a nurse. They have basic knowledge of the technology but don't know theory or have the mathematics background as full fledged engineers. And no, I would prefer having nurses over nurses aids; if I am just having my blood pressure, body temperature, and bpm taken then a nurses aid can do it but I hope a nurse is there to interpret the results. |

Let them strike, every time someone stubs a toe in Santa Cruz County they are airlifted to Santa Clara so why do we even need them?
Can you tell me how many engineers have a client die in their 'office'? |
Hey Pittle.....you are so full of it. |
Bunny, engineers are designing products that can do just that. Kill people. If the engineers do not have it correct at the Lawrence Livermore ignition Facility they could wipe out all of california.
Lets get back to the issue of unions and compensation. Union compensation is based on job title and tenure not productivity, quality of work and metrics data. |

Sure wish we had a choice both with care and another Hospital to attend! Maybe its a good time for the UC Hospital system of Ca. too take a good look at this!
You didn't answer the question. How many engineers have a client die in THEIR OFFICE? Union compensation is not based on title/tenure. It is based on delivering the services that the contract specifies. The union members are under contract to deliver services based on the education, expertise and experience (people dying in their charge comes to mind). If they don't do that then the compensation ends. This is a very basic contract law principle. |
Bunny.....not in the business world. You talk about delivering services in the contract. Agreed. It doesn't say how the services are delivered and how work performance is measured to justify pay increase. All nurses good or bad get a pay increase with new contract.
The engineer nurse comparison is irrelevant and you know it. We are talking about unions driving up the cost of healthcare. There is no beef with nurses what so ever. They are victims of a corrupt system. ALL professions are equally honorable. |
Ignorant!!! |
The comparison is relevant because both professions are made up of people who have the public good in their hands. Nurses get the added benefit of seeing the success or failure of the outcomes for their clients first hand. For some reason you seem to think that only 'unions' drive up health care. How about doctors, administrators, physical therapists, medical supply vendors, energy providers, food service vendors, health insurance providers, ambulance drivers and the stockholders? Are you saying that all of these players should have their incomes controlled? If not, is there a reason why you are picking on the nurse's union as the sole cause? |
Once again I will state it. Unions drive up the cost of healthcare. Doesnt matter which one. I clearly stated all professions are honorable which they are. Unions have systematically destroyed all businesses they have had a hand in.
If you do not beleive unions are corrup ask to audit their financials and see where your union money is going. You would be very surprised and outraged. I know a union accountant and they have told me many horror stories of corruption and waste. All professions have the public good at hand even dishwashers so that is again not relevant. You are obviously a nurse and I mean no attack on you or your profession. I will take umbrage with unions and you belong to one. I am sorry for that. |
But you evade the question, are unions the sole cause of the increase in health care costs? If not, should we impose controls on ALL of the contributors to the increase? And I'm confused about your one-sided treatment of unions. Unions sign a contract for their services. This, of course, implies that there is another signer of the contract. That would be the business owner. Why don't you rail against business owners for signing these contracts. After all it takes two to tango!! |
