Our BOE has been fairly successful in reducing expenditures for Gilmer County and in light of the reduced tax digest for the past three years, some of the decisions were extremely important. However, they have done so at the expense of our kids.
The education of the children was not brought up once during the past year. After they closed Oakland and moved all those kids into Ellijay Elem. creating an elementary school with 1200 students, they didn't bother to put anything in place to help alleviate potential future problems.
Just plain common sense would tell you that this was going to be traumatic and difficult for the kids and teachers. So if you have a background in education as our superintendent is suppose to have, you would know that the potential for failure was daunting.
Of course, if they had studied the situation of closing Oakland for more than 2 weeks they might have been able to come up with other solutions or have put into place some before and after school programs to help the kids adjust and to help the teachers with the burden.
Did they consider something like making 3 "subgroup schools" within EES and foster some kind of competition among the kids? I'm sure they didn't think of this because it would be unique, but if there were meetings where the public could make suggestions, they might have done some of these things.
There are so many things they could have done or tried, but they did nothing. And now the scores show that we have a school full of failing children that we cannot undo. We will promote these kids to the next grade without the foundation or basics to build on so they can fall further and further behind.
They have reduced the annual budget, but at an irreversible expense on your children. So go out there and vote for the incumbents on our Board of Education if the education part of the job is not important.
