the smoke shops are mostly gone and post smokes isnt just a hooka shop. the actually have allot in there and they support local artists also. the gas stations, lol you should check out how many other citys have gas stations. we have about as many as other small cities.
I do agree tho that salamanca could be a tourist destination. but i dont know about main street. there is little parking spaces. if you go to ellicotville the have a draw, the holiday valley is open year around with golf, the skiing, and other activities year around. if salamanca opened a resort community then maybe we could compete with ellicotville. but getting salamanca and the sni to work together is the key. |

I have lived in Salamanca for about twenty four years out of my thirty on this planet, and while I agree with you, I also have to say that it will never happen.
The problem is that whenever a business opens, nobody ever goes there (including any tourists frequenting the casino), and it closes a couple of months later. It has been that way ever since I was a child. The ONLY businesses in this town which ever really survive ARE the gas stations, smoke shops, bars, bingo hall, McDonald's, and Rite Aid. There simply isn't enough resident money (or even interest) in the town to keep specialty shops afloat. I would like to see this place become a quaint little town, but I gave up on that dream a long time ago. |

Judged: 1 1 1 Here's the problem ... NO LARGE-SCALE BUSINESSES in their right minds will get involved with investing millions (YES -MILLIONS) on an Indian Reservaation, unless they're able to lock into a long-term property lease at a rate far below market retail. |

Judged: 4 1 some guy i agree, but if the nation and salamanca got together and actually agreed on something that would be a step. we have 2 museums in salamanca, and if there was a cultural center with small shops near the casino and an arena where they could have big show, ie a rodeo and truck, motorcycle shows. if they had the casino running properly with concerts running all the time, and promote the city as well it could grow. but no one works together, they think they have to fight all the time. |

Judged: 2 2 2 http://www.cabazonoutlets.com BTW ... This outlet sits on the reservation of The Cabazon Band of Mission Indians, about 20-miles west of Palm Springs, CA on Interstate 10. It can be done, but there was a lot of negotiations involved with BUSINESS REPS representing the tribe. Salamanca's downtown would be THE PERFECT COMPLEMENT to Ellicottville as a YEAR ROUND ATTRACTION !!! |

I wonder if the Seneca nation or city realize the potential. If so,they should have bettered this town by now rather than let it get to where it is now. Very sad.

I thought they where going to open a water park at the end of state park? What ever happen to that?

Judged: 1 that would bring tons of business! You would almost HAVE to upgrade the city and create small business in order to handle the masses. Hotels, food, shopping, more camping, fishing and tackle. JMO |

Judged: 1 1 1 The city backed out of their deal about the water park...Once they realized they could do construction or trucking with out the nations approval...remember the nation owns the land the city LEASES..the city didnt want to pony up the dough for nation fees so the city dropped the ball. |

Judged: 1 1 1 I'm often accused of HATING INDIANS on this forum, but unfortunately, when you speak the RAW TRUTH they DON'T LIKE IT !!! I'd lived on and nearby several Indian reservations when I lived in the southwest after leaving WNYS. There are quite a few Indians livin' high on the hog these days, drivin' BMWs & Escalades, livin' in million dollar homes. Unfortunately, their kids are either 600lbs. from sittin' on their ass all day long playin' video games eatin' Taco Bell, or 90lb. toothless speed freaks. And, their parents COULD GIVA RAT'S ASS !!! This is a fact, and NOT my opinion ... They generally lack the judgment skills to prosper FOR THE LONG TERM ... YT just didn't roll over and give 'em the key to gettin' filthy rich by sittin' on their ass, YT started the process of them eventually destroying themselves by their own hand ... Have ya ever heard the saying: "Watch out what you ask for, you might just get it?" |

Judged: 2 2 1 PUT PEOPLE TO WORK AND BUILD A WAL MART AND STRIP MALL AT THAT LOCATION!! Don't build a off/on ramp on 86, make people travel through the city to get there thus prospective shoppers (casino, ASP and E'ville) would have to experience what Salamanca has to offer, especially if small shops/businesses opened along roadways going to and from the WM! Just like the days of the RR when workers and people stayed in or around town they became customers of the city, especially on Main Street (near the RR) to boost the economy! |

Judged: 3 3 1 I have to say I disagree...as a small business owner I know what opening a Walmart would do to the city. It would put small businesses such as Hampshire Mills out of business. I own the Salamanca Dance Center and obviously, Walmart isn't going to put me out of business. Unless of course they start offering dance classes. It will effect my business though. I sell merchandise (shoes, leotards, tights, etc) that aspect of my business would be done if a Walmart was brought to the city. I have plans to not only grow my studio, but also to start a dance supply shop within my studio for all of the local studios. Currently, to buy brand name supplies, the nearest dance shops are in Buffalo and Erie (or online of course). My dreams of having a dance store would be over. Don't get me wrong, I love me some Walmart. I go to one at least once a week! But the reality is that a big business like that wouldn't help the city (except by creating minimum wage jobs) it would put the small businesses out. What Salamanca needs is people who truly care about it. They need to care about the businesses they own. They need to care about maintaining their businesses and store fronts. And they need the support of the community. We all need to support each other if we want to change Salamanca. It isn't up to the City or the SNI. It's up to us. So instead of complaining, go down to Hampshire Mills and make a purchase. Or sign your child up for a dance class. Get on the board for the Ray Evans Theatre and make a change, don't wait for someone else to make it. Get your prescriptions at Park Pharmacy instead of Rite Aid. Bank at local banks and credit unions. Join Salamanca Fitness instead of driving to the YMCA in Olean. These are a few of the little changes we can make to all help each other! |
