Downtown projects in Apple Valley, Burnsville, Lakeville adapt ...

While the economy is causing road bumps for some suburban downtowns in the south metro, others are adapting to the market and attracting businesses.

Adapt???
Both the Arts Center and the Parking Deck were "approved" by the City government over the VAST majority of people opposing this. These two projects are being built with the City residents footing most of the bill.

It's one thing to force business owners to sell (Eagan), it's another thing to force people to buy something (3rd tier assembly spaces) that historically doesn't generate revenues to replace lost property taxes.

The mindboggling thing about this article: This same PP "reporter" wrote about the failed deals, changing proposals, and heavyhanded Burnsville tactics 6 months ago.

Adapt???

The Burnsville thing is nuts. Many of the condos/townhomes sit empty, funded in part by tax dollars of Burnsville's citizens. A level 3 sex offender just moved in right next to the "heart of the city". Mediterranean Cruise Cafe owner should be wary.

We have seen many municipalities around the metro waste hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars on developments like Heart of the City. The wost part about them is they do not directly attract better paying jobs to the community. Studies on tax burden show these types of developments only burden other taxpayers more and end up requiring more services than they pay for through taxes.

I think this is good they are at least trying. Where we live in the northern metro the suburbs up here are getting run down with old housing stock, crime issues, and fewer young families each year so I think the southern burbs could have more future potential if they try to improve things.

This is ridiculous. I can't think of a time when I've been to BV and have not found a place to park. Maybe I'm just another naysayer, but I don't think the arts center is the answer to BV either.
