Affordable housing: an opportunity

Shame on those mean ol' suburban planners for structuring their own communities rather than allowing outside homebuilders, nonprofits and the Metropolitan Council to legislate their futures .

James, you realize that by purposing the use of foreclosed properties you are leaving your own community of Lakeville open to this type of development. From what I've read foreclosure is a big issue for all communities

Using up our domestic oil reserves would be a big mistake.

Ok, so we get a few years of cheaper oil. Then what? We'll be right back where we were, dependant on foreign oil supplies, but without a reserve for emergencies.

And what if they cut us off? If we use up our reserves now, we'll be S O L. If we do tap into our reserves, it would have to be in conjunction with a major reduction in our need for oil, period. It's like running through your retirement savings in you 30's and 40's, going on vacation and living it up, knowing that you will probably end up having health problems in your 70's and 80's, and end up penniless an miserable in a state nursing home.

While I'm in agreement with Mr Adams-Westin on most of his points, unfortunately, stores and malls have to be brightly lit after hours. If all lights were out at most stores, shopkeepers would come to work in the morning to find all their merchandise stolen under the cover of darkness.

Mark E. Adams must have early onset of Alzheimer's if he believes there was a single US car that came even close to 40 mpg unless he is referring to the gas mileage going down a mountain. LOL!!

Yea not sure which car's Mark E Adam's is referring to, maybe diesels which still get great mileage but most cars back then were big V8's that probably got 10mpg on leaded gasoline and no emissions’ controls. Remember the air was really bad back then.

Certainly if AL Gore can gobble up energy like there's no tomorrow, then why can't everyone else?

One thing I can't quite figure out, if there is not enough oil in ANWR or the Gulf Coast as some environmentalists are claiming, then why have a no drilling restriction in the 1st place? Doesn't make any sense.

Yes, everyone living outside the inner-city is clamoring for pit-bulls and the violent thugs that own them as neighbors!
I wish there was housing-diversity in my neighborhood; there aren't any crack-houses within miles of here!
It's insensitive!
It might even be RACIST!
Shouldn't every neighborhood have a couple crack-houses and lots of drug dealers?
I feel our community is being inordinately deprived of Diversity!

You'd have to be a chick. ;) I won't appear on Jerry Springer for less than $100, but I won't go back on the Maury Povich show for less than $10,000!
;)
Happy 4th pumpkin!

Lucky you! You're living the dream that MLK talked about.
Oh wait. You aren't.
He talked about judging people based on the content of their character, not the color of their skin. What you (and I) have are people that use the color of their skin to excuse their lack of decency or character.

You should consider channeling your dislike for Blacks against the Taliban and join the Marines!

I'll admit to prejudice regarding blacks, but I've also been educated by others that not all blacks are doing stuff like this 24/7.
I've also worked with quite a few blacks over the years, and they have nothing in common with criminals like that.
Black people are accustomed to think of themselves as a collective, where the actions of one reflect upon them all, but it needn't be so. Either good or bad, ultimately everyone is an individual.
I have problems with collectivists of any stripe and I still have a lot to learn, but you've chosen the more ignorant lock-step brain-dead position where any criticism of any black person somehow automatically constitutes an example of "racism".
Even most of my detractors here @ Topix wouldn't make that leap, at least not on this story.

My Saturn SL (2002) can get up to 40 mpg. It actually got 42mpg on a road trip (driving from gas station to gas station, not stopping once). Strangely, that make/model has been discontinued and no other Saturn gets as good of gas mileage anymore. No wonder I keep getting letters from Saturn offering to buy my car for top dollar.

Which "them" are you talking about? Poor people in general, or just certain ones?

Wouldn't it be easier to just build more of these?

The 2002 Saturn SL is rated 24/25 city to 34/36mpg highway for the manual transmission. Fhttp://www.fueleconomy.gov/FE G/bymodel/2002_Saturn_SL.shtml

I'm sure in some cases and conditions you can get rather good mileage but you have to average that out over time.

I'm looking at switching my Caravan out for a Pontiac Vibe, good mileage 1.8 ltr engine and you can actually carry some decent gear with it.

take care
