A Virginia Property Tax Exemption for Veterans statewide ballot question is on the November 2, 2010 ballot in Virginia as an legislatively-referred constitutional amendment. The amendment will ask the voters of Virginia if they will approve or reject a property tax exemption for a armed forces veteran or their surviving spouse if the veteran had a 100 percent permanent and total disability related to military service. The ballot question reads: Shall the Constitution be amended to require the General Assembly to provide a real property tax exemption for the principal residence of a veteran, or his or her surviving spouse, if the veteran has a 100 percent service-connected, permanent, and total disability? How will you vote on November 2nd?

I can not believe that anyone would vote NO to give a Tax Break to veterans that is totally 100% Disable and can not work. If it wasn't for the veterans fighting for our freedom you would not even be able to vote. It is a big "YES" for me.

No. I don't kiss veteran's asses. Once they're retired from the military, they're normal citizens. I would gladly support people IN service having their taxes exempted, but not ones OUT of service.

Petsound, I suspect you missed the part of the proposed amendment that read, "if the veteran has a 100 percent service-connected, permanent, and total disability?" Does that change your mind?

my husband has served 18 plus years in the military and he is still in. we have claimed virginia as our home of residence since he has been in which means he pays virginia taxes.. we don't visit there very often sometimes it goes 3 yrs. before we are there but i wanted to tag my vehicle while we was in germany so when we come home on vacation we would have a vehicle but since we bought the vehicle in georgia and we didn't have to pay taxes they want us to pay taxes to virginia just like we bought it .... they are so stupid... i think with all the taxes we have paid and got nothing for we should not have to pay taxes on our vehicle.... tell me what you think about this virginia

Does that change your mind? No. Disability is disability, and it shouldn't matter if it was connected to being in the military. When you join the military, you have to expect to get hurt or killed. It's like being a cop: There is a danger, and YOU have to realize and accept that if you enter that profession.

It makes more sense that a veteran be exempt from paying property tax than a church.

Sounds like you never served a day in the military. When you leave the military you are put on inactive reserve which means they can call you back anytime. People like you make me sick. Maybe you should kiss their ass as they should save yours.

During the VietNam war most states gave Veterans a 100.00 bonus if you served in VietNam. Virginia did not to it but they still took their tax money. Thank you and you husband for serving our country. Yes if you are a spouse you are serving too.

You're calling me a dummy for my belief? That's an unintelligent way to argue, and you deserve to have your IP banned. I'm sick of people like you. I don't believe anyone OUT of the military, disabled or not, should get their taxes exempted. If you're inactive, to me, that's OUT.

Yes by all means disabled veterans should have a Property Tax Exemption. I believe veterans should receive the exception before churches, preachers, and the non veteran disabled. They served their country so we can have our freedoms such as a simple thing of being on Topix.

My nephew took a job out in Oregon for a couple of years. About a year before he moved back to Virginia, he bought a new truck. When he moved back to Virginia, they charged him *sales* tax on his truck, in order to register the vehicle here. How the "H" can Virginia enforce a sales tax on a transaction that did not happen here, and did not involve a Virginia resident? That is just seriously wrong!
