I read in the front page of the News Enterprise today that a Methadone Clinic is in the works for Elizabethtown! The only thing holding it back from being a reality is approval from the DEA. I am having mixed feelings about the clinic being here if it does get approval. I'm sure they help people that are seriously trying to beat opiate addiction, but also I'm sure there are more than a few people who would start going to it just for a fix. I have seen first hand how methadone makes people behave and I don't see how doping someone up on some other substance will help them beat any addiction. I just don't get it.. I guess because I've never been addicted to anything. But I have seen it kill people and I've seen people act really spaced out from it. My friend was on it and he would pass out in mid conversation. he called it "nodding out". and the sad thing is, he would DRIVE himself home from the methadone clinic everyday after his dose!!!! What does everybody else feel about maybe having a methadone clinic here in our town?? Whats the pro's and cons??

The con for me would be paying for this mess. Rather, give these people copious amounts of whatever drug they so crave-opiates are good(a bucket full) and a monogrammed cardboard coffin waiting; so they don't engage in crime for habit support and to get them out of the gene pool sooner.

Personally I think it is a good idea. The clinics are legal, and while on the program these people are to be drug tested on a regular basis. I also think it is a easy way to get addicted to another drug, but it is a choice that they have. I have never taken it, but have been very close to someone in a clinic and it completely changed their lives for the better. I have noticed the "nodding off" but it always happened at night, a good 12 hours after they dosed.
Frankly, I would rather there be one in E-town. If anyone is nodding off behind the wheel, at least they won't be doing it on I65 going 90 miles an hour. Chances are they will be home or at work before the drug even kicks in. It can take up to 45 minutes.

I must say that when I read the paper this morning I was completely disgusted. I highly believe that this will have a negative impact on our community. It was said in the paper that a clinic would be better to help people beat their addiction rather than put them in jail like the system does now. That is bullshit. Why do we want these people driving to go get their fix and driving themselves home putting everyone in danger, how does that fix anything? If you want to help them, then give them treatment while they are in jail. All this is going to do is bring a bunch of low life druggies to our town. The guy that runs the clinics said himself that he hasn't seen a higher rate in crime but has seen numerous traffic accidents when his patients are leaving. Another thing, having a methadone clinic is bad enough but it's going within 1700 feet of the highschool. This is ridiculous!! I hope and pray that the mayor, sheriff, city council and other elected officials run his ass out of town. This is one thing that Etown can definitely do without!!!

Most Democrats that I know are very much in favor of taking tax payer dollars and funneling them to drug addicts and lazy welfare recipients.

I had to take methadone, not for an addiction, but for severe pain. I was awaiting surgery on my back. The doctor put me on it and took me off of the regular narcotic pain medicine I was on. It was the most horrible experience I have ever had. I would literally fall asleep, while eating, while talking, sitting up. Completely a zombie, drooling.. It was not pretty. Then it got to where when I laid down my heart rate would drop so low I could not breathe, and it would wake me. I finally went off of this medicine (cold turkey.. NOT a good idea lol).. The withdrawals I had were unreal. I call methadone prescription crack. It has to be similar. Although I have no experience in street drugs, I reminded myself of one of those t.v. show addicts who had just shot up heroine. I couldn't stand the way I felt, nor the fear of falling asleep and never waking again! And the doctor put me on this because it was supposed to be "less addictive than the other narcotic pain medicine I was on". I believe I would of died taking that had I continued.

Vote hell-to-the-no.. Keep it out.. I can only imagine the people it will bring..

I understand. I'm an old school Dem. I care about working people and the small business person. Sometime back it all changed in the 1970's to what you see as the modern Dem. However the alternative side seems to be more song than substance of recent so why bother changing? So I didn't.

In fact, I consider work the core of one's self and a reason for being. Therefore people who waste time doing drugs and living useless lives are for all purposes useless eaters and consumers of my fellow working people's efforts whom I have no sympathy or regard unless they clean up on their own accord and live a constructive life after. I do have sympathy for the guy that gets out of bed a four in the morning, thirty degrees out, and goes to work on framing houses. Or the single mom working a job and going to school at night for betterment, both paying taxes to support silly treatment centers or incarceration "homes" for useless druggie people.

Druggies I'd drop from a chopper at sea in international waters to solve the issue. Does this clarify things?

My husband goes to the Southern Indiana Treatment center Mon-Friday and has been for the past two years. My experience with someone on methdone isn't a good one, let me tell you. He has worn out our car that was almost brand new when he started going there!! He will just doze off during conversation, during dinner, during everything. It really bothers me. We don't even have sex much anymore because of his methadone use. He has also went from around 170 lbs to around 220 because all he does is eat and sleep and he is constantly sweating. It is ruining our marriage!! Our kids don't understand whats wrong with daddy, they just know that he isn't as outgoing as he used to be. He became addicted to prescription pain medication after a car accident a few years ago. I'm glad he wanted to kick his addiction, but I think there were probably better alternatives to the methadone clinic. It costs us around $500 dollars a month for him to go to the SITC. It is helping him because he doesn't go out on the street and try to buy oxycontins and pain killers, but he's still not drug free like I'd like him to be. His best friend started going there with him last year..and his friend nearly died from overdosing on Methadone and some other medication he took with it. I think it was a nerve pill or something like that. It scares me to death everytime he leaves. I don't think bringing a treatment center to E-town will help because all the people that are just going to get a fix will probably knock the people who are seriously trying to change their lives out of going. I don't know what is going to happen, but I hope the right choice will be made.

Unfortunately Etown is full of drug addicts and people living on welfare. As a result of that the people that do work and try to make a living can't, because we are spending all our money on these pieces of shit that wont get off drugs or like having seven kids so that we can support them while they sit on there lazy asses at home and do drugs. So yeah thats just what we need is a methadone clinic, another drug for the lazy ass baby making drug addicts to use....

To join a methadone clinic is a huge commitment. The shortest program they have is 2 years. I've heard of people who become so dependent that they stay for 10 years or more. Mostly because they are scared to stop.

I say lets not let these clinic come here . and check out the other one I'm telling you about . If they want to use drugs let them , let them get busted ( which they will ) and at least we will pay to keep them in jail not out on the street seliing to our kids and They WILL SELL TO YOUR KIDS FOLKS . SO please on this one we all need to stick together and not let this happen . And yes they want to stay on the drug , it is highly addictive read up about it , also read up on suboxone . Please for the kids sake please im pleading lets not let this happen . You ask why Im pleading I have had a very close person die from this stuff , I have worked in a clinic for very short time , I have also worked at a jail and I know .

be very afraid. I know I was taking the methadone. I took myself off of it. Granted it wasn't the smartest decision to go cold turkey but.. I knew I would die. I just knew it. Dont let them come to your town, nothing good can come of it. Fight it with every breath you have in you. It may sound exaggerated but I firmly believe methadone is nothing more than a legalized crack. Its much more addictive than any pain medicine I have been on. Thank God I am off of it and doing much much better!

To the individual who mentioned patients getting "lots" of drugs--methadone clinics don't hand out a supply of medication like the suboxone clinic does. Also, if the patient is going to sleep or nodding, then they are taking too much of something and the clinic needs to know. The patient isn't being honest about his/her effects and is WANTING to be over-medicated. Regarding the person who almost died--if he/she took something he wasn't supposed to, it isn't the clinic's fault and he should be thrown out of the program. Hardin Co. seriously needs this clinic and many of you will live to regret your narrow-mindedness when it is your child, grandchild or even yourself in need of the service.

True. This country has a $1.4 trillion deficit now. Our national currency credit is failing, true unemployment is over 10 percent, the social systems are the largest federal budget item, and we make little of what we consume to build wealth. All the while, supporting a cradle to grave social welfare system. Public housing, big budget jails, counseling outfits, public schools, medical cards ,food cards, AFDC, and assorted state social welfare departments.
Meanwhile, China and India is producing thousands of well educated people in science and the professions. One is well on its way to surpassing our production on a sounder economic base. One that has no compassion for substance using self destructive individuals.
We need people that work and live productive lives, not trouble making drug-heads costing society, supported by those that do endeavor.
