O.K. That makes sense and I guess would explain how Sandy Bottom got that name also.

Nope. I did go with family friends down there to buy vegetables from a Hillenbrand fellow, who had a huge garden and sold things from it. I remember how black the soil was, but thought maybe he used compost.

I heard this song growing up:

If you ever go to Blackbottom
Keep your money in your shoes
'Cause the women down in Blackbottom
Got the Blackbottom Blues

I remember the pool. I took swimming lessons down there in 1981! We would dive down to the bottom of the shallow end for pennies, and any we could pick up we got to keep. As kids, we really thought that was something!

Back in the early 30's their were only one street light in Black Bottom. It was located at the end of Roan Street going around the curve back toward the baseball field. Of course the roads were dirt. That is why it was called Black Bottom because it was always dark. It's name came from the darkness. Yes the dirt is dark and rich and grows good plants. Since I have lived in the Bottom all my life and still live in the Bottom, I have tried to find out more information on it. The river bank use to have little fenced in lots on it with hogs and chickens before the flood came. The horse shoe court is only one of three in the state of Tennessee that has at least 10 official courts.

Good thought, but not quite right. It was called blackbottom before the street light. It's because of the rich soil. The McQueens have lived in blackbottom a long time, but I am from one of the original families.A good source of information would be from the Shell,Range,LaGrand,or Miller families.Keep posting,Blackbottom was a great place to live.

Remember the water slide that used to sit behind where Pal's is? I remember it being there and watching people fly down it as we drove up or down the hill to go to Blackbottom! I remember the pool too. Those were some good times!

Hillenbrand from earlier post #6 was an old family member of BB. Perry was also one. I think that the older Shell Range LaGrand and Miller Families are deceased. Who is the oldest living person to ask about this ? Anyone over 100 ?.
