Yeah, instead of building better schools or bringing in jobs (what a concept!), our county leaders want to spend upwards of 3/4 of a million dollars for a new barn, complete with useless make work jobs at extreme wages.
(While cutting teachers and classes in the schools)
I hope the voters remember all of this nonsens nest time they pay their mortgae and wonder why it is $100.00 higher than last month?
Or better yet, I hope they remember come election day!

Thank you for that short, yet prime example of whats wrong with this county/country; "nobody thinks anyone should be knowledgeable or care about a situation unless it involves a paycheck". A strong school system isn't just for our children's well being, it grazes a path much deeper. When a large industry is looking to develop in our county, one of the main things they look at is....our school system. Many people relocate when this happens. What do we say to the CEO's? "Our school system isn't worth a shit, but check out our animal shelter"..WTH A child's education in the area you call home is a very important issue. Thank you for this post. You are exactly right we need to organize some how and become involved in this political process to let OUR voices be heard. I am going to go to the next budget committee meeting we need to stand up and fight for our childrens' education. Call the County Mayor Leon Hunphrey and tell him ouur children SHOULD. COME FIRSt before.the Animal Shelter and before the Jail. We need to put money into education our children are our future.

If you parents got together and raised hell at the next county commission meeting, even inviting local media, I bet it would get these idiots' attention.

I agree with you, and some of the teachers, well let's just say they are pathetic role models from what I see outside the classroom! The schools and education system have been given enough money and it obviously benefits none of the children, only the teachers. It's time to start on a few useful projects that we need in this county. Half the girls you see graduate are knocked up within the following year, or they get prego while in high school and they never even attend college, so there goes your higher education! They know WIC, welfare, and food stamps will keep them going.

Isnt that the truth!
The High Schools resemble the audition areas of the Jerry Springer Show, dont they? Strange looking people doing strange things in strange places, and the teachers looking the other way.
If there is anything the CC school officials, principles, and teachers just wont tolerate, its traditional values.
What would be wrong with a dress code?
Perhaps if the kids had to take the hog rings out of their ears and lips and toungues and noses (who knows where else) and even perhaps pull their breeches up (so they didnt any longer drag the ground, exposing their underwear) and maybe even drag a comb through their hair, or dare I even say it...school uniforms?
Or at least, clean clothes without holes in them that were appropriate to wear in public?
Clean clothes, clean bodies, clean minds...what is wrong with that?

From the Hampton High School website. How well it is enforced.....? Of course, kids dress and act the way their parents let them.
HIGH SCHOOL DRESS POLICY Students shall dress and groom in a clean, neat and modest manner so as not to distract or interfere with the operation of the school.
More specific guidelines appropriate for each level of school (elementary, middle, junior high and senior high) may be developed. Prinicipals, faculty members and students shall be involved in the development of each appropriate set of guidelines.
When a student is attired in a manner which is likely to cause disruption or interference with the operation of the school, the principal shall take appropriate action, which may include suspension.
In keeping with the educational purpose of this school district, students are expected to dress and groom themselves as individuals with a sense of responsibility. The district's dress code is established to teach hygiene, instill discipline, prevent disruption, avoid safety hazards and provide a postive learning enviroment. Each student is expected to keep his/her person and his/her clothing clean and neat. It is expected that each student, while exercising the right to dress and groom himself/herself in an individual way, will also show, through his appearence, a high degree of respect for the standards of decency, cleanliness and style acceptable to the school. The administration has discretion in determining the appropriateness of dress. If it is determined that the dress or grooming of a student is inappropriate, the student will be sent home or removed to an alternate setting. Any class time missed during the time the student has gone home to change will be unexcused.
A partial list of guidlines include:
Shirts, blouses or sweaters, pants/dresses and shoes must be worn at all times. The practice of "sagging" is considered to be gang related symbolism and will not be tolerated. No head apparel, including caps, hats, headbands, bandanas, tobaggans, or hair stockings will be worn in the building. Clothing shall fit properly and shall not be unreasonably tight or unreasonably baggy. Pants must be worn at the waist. No sagging allowed. Shorts cannot be any shorter than below the extended finger tips when standing. Skirts and dresses cannot be any shorter than two (2) inches above the knee. Dresses must completely cover the shoulders. No spaghetti straps, tank tops or muscle shirts are permitted. Bare midriffs, bare shoulders or backs, and excessively low cut clothing, along with clothing made of see-through material is prohibited. The midriff area must be fully covered at all times. Hair styles, unusual hair color, sideburns, and mustaches must be in good taste, clean and well groomed. Clothing that exhibits written, pictorial or implied references to illegal substances, drugs or alcohol, negative slogans, vulgarities, or that which attracts undue attention is prohibited. Prohibited items include:(1) long, large and/or heavy chains (2) studded or chained accessories and (3) sunglasses, except for health purposes. Leotards, body suits, biking or jogging shorts, and skintight outer materials such as spandex are not appropriate. For the safety of the school population, trench coats and dusters will not be allowed. Facial jewelry shall be limited to the ears only. Book bags must be clear or mesh; otherwise they must be placed in locker upon arrival at school. The principal may make exceptions in special circumstances or on occasions such as holidays or special performances and may further prescribe dress in certain classes such as physical education, vocational classes and science labs

It is great to have a policy but it is not enforced uniformly and without bias towards certain cliques. This is pretty much a county-wide policy because I got the same thing when my kids started at Unaka. Certain kids or groups could pretty much do as they pleased, kind of -- "who you know" determines how the policy is enforced. Seen it for myself so I am speaking from experience.

Your right!!My opinion of our Mayor sunk when many local counties were trying to recruit a certain industry up north. The company was looking to expand, and our region was being looked at as a option. Mayors from Greenville, Washington County, and Hancock was among a few that pressed hard for this. Our mayor didn't even put Carter County's name in the boat, and that was a huge mistake in my eyes. You must keep your mind on the main priorites as mayor, and I've yet to see what his main priority is. Our school system is a huge impression of our counties values and we must give these children the best possible. Are all children going to come out as, educational master pieces?...no Are they all going to dress like my 30 yr old self?...no It's pathetic that we can only see in that direction when it comes to education. You've got to give a child a backboard to lean on when LIFE comes their way. As a tax payer, I have no problem giving our school system the means to succeed. Parents may fail a child, but as a community....we cannot fail these's kids, by not giving them the funds to have the best. I'm not sure if the mayor doesn't realize this or is to busy trying to get near six figure jobs created for a "oversee" to a animal shelter. What a joke!!!

The Mayor is the only one that has put things in proper perspective. The County Commission and School Board are caught up in a terrible spin zone. Carter County Government and the school system are both broken business models. The tax payers will not continue to bear the expense for total mismangement of their hard earned dollars. Bowers, Arney and Chambers are clueless in advocating a tax increase when there is a surplus of approximately 2 million dollars in the current budget. It's obvious these guys are working solely for their own self interest. What a family affair this has turned out to be!

with the trillions of dollars spent every year, this shouldnt even b an issue, we should have both! we pay way to many taxes here in tn almost 10 per of our income, just intaxes on goods, 40 cents on a gallon of gas, or more, last time i checked, may b higher, just look at the gas pump next time, u hemorage ur money for a tank of gas, 33 percent of the top of our checks, thats one of the higest tax rates in the country! Both the shelter and the school need funding now! One big cause of our taxes being wasted #1 corrupt officials, we need to make them accountable!#2 100s of thousands of ppl using the system, lying about income, or straight up, just doing nothing, and profitting off our sweat, using every excuse under the sun for not caring, oh i hve a drug problem, or i dropped out of school, ect.ect. not to mention how hard they make it for u too get out of the system some ppl would b worse off for getting a min wage job. fact: a 100 per of ppl, who makes minumiam wage can not afford the average too bed room apt in america anymore! we as a ppl give so much to this facist government to not hve essintual things like, txt books computers, decent food or an animail shelter.

The money is there for the animal shelter, and the crazy idea of wasting our tax money for a "project manager" for a animal shelter is nuts. Our mayor should just find a chair beside the director sense this is the only thing he find important in our county.
We've got problems when our children is faced with cuts in education involving; art, music, after school programs, library cuts, this is just drop in the bucket of the cuts. This will cause another problem, more parents will resort to the city. In turn, we get more cuts from the federal level.
We must figure out what is wrong with this county when the animal shelter and school system is compared as...What's more important? The CC schools is the largest employee base in our county. If parents, employees, and people that care about the future of our kids let their voices be heard, then I think the mayor may rethink his off base priorities.
I find it a insult that my child's education is being overshadowed by a animal shelter, that is already funded. I'm glad some officials are fighting for the school system, because this is priority 1 in my book.

They'll always will be kids that will fall through the cracks. The situations that some children are exposed to at home, some of us could never understand.
It's the kids that yearn for a life full of educated values, and will strive beyond high school, that we as parents need to make sure have the best within these schools.
What a lame idiotic way to approach this; "the schools don't need funding because the way kids dress"....come on now.
