This is why there is a need for metal detectors and cameras in the hallways... it's sad...

Why did they erase so many comments just now? Some were offensive, but some were fine.

See, it's things like this that scares me about teaching with gangs in the area, crazy kids, crappy parents and many other factors. If you catch my drift..

The 'boy' should be tried as an adult. Why is it that when Americans of this age bracket do heinous acts, they are described as 'kids'...but, when it occurs in other countries they are described as 'men', 'terrorists', 'insurgents'....we all know that AbuGhraib has(had) 12 year olds in the American-run prison.

the teacher's name was Mrs. Gilbert, i believe she was a commucations teacher. And no, they don't have metal detectors at the site but the school admin. does partake in random searches whereby they used metal wand detectors. there were also cameras in the hallways which were installed over the summer of '05-'06. and honestly, try living in Elgin before you make comments on gang violence and all the other sorts of nonsense being said here...it's not as bad as it's made out to be.

I agree with you. There has been no connection to gang activity with this story. The % of gang members as compared to population is less than 1%. Let's work on those clowns and encourage parents to let their kids know that they should NOT stab the teacher.(last sentence was sarcastic)

Yes, this is a horrible, sad situation for all involved and it could have happened ANYWHERE. The teacher involved is new to EHS for any grads who think they might know her; she taught Child Development, Teen Living, and other Consumer Science Classes. The student in question has no known gang involvement and is the last student you'd ever expect to do this. Do you think our out-of-state, rich, superintendent will feel any guilt for taking money that could be used to beef up security, reduce class size, and help identify potentially violent students?

There are incidents in many schools with metal detectors. If someone really wants to get something in, they will. What we really need to do is quit making excuses for trouble makers. The jails are too full, they will end up on the street, we need to turn them around and make responsible citizens out of them. In the meantime, students and teachers that actually care need to live in fear and less gets done.

An Elgin Alum wrote: <quoted text> When I was there, they had metal detectors...I doubt they were removed. they do not currently have metal detectors at the entrances, nor have I EVER seen a dean with a wand, except in the lame video they showed us on school safety last year. She should be lucky he didnt have a gun. I have friends who claim to have seen classmates with weapons including knives, brass knuckles and yes, guns. I'm just glad I wont be there anymore next year!
