Well I wish I could answer all those questions for you. I just moved out to Elephant Butte not very long ago and came across this forum lastnight. With a quick google search I came up with that page I linked. Other then that I don't know anything about T or C or E.B. but after reading that it seems kinda shifty. It wouldn't be the first small town I lived in where people claim that the police and town run the good ol' boy system. The last small town I lived in the police showed up at my door and wanted to see my I.D. stating that there have been 911 hang up calls coming from my address. I didn't have any phone service at my house just a cell phone with a number from another town. So far nothing like that has gone on like that here for me. Maybe its because I have no record, never been to jail. I have heard stories about cops around here doing speed traps and even heard about someone getting a ticket for 1 mph over the speed limit which I find hard to believe. I use a radar detector and half the time I see a police car they aren't even running their radar. As far as anything I need that they have for sale in town with jacked up prices, thank god for the internet always better deals on here... except gas...
Out of curiousity, where did you relocate to?

Yes, my wifey works at a local retailer, and she was coming home one night not too long ago, and on the curve by cw's water place, a cop clocked her at 35 in a 25, and when the ticket was written, the cop asked her how she would plead, guilty or not. So, they do run radar, but maybe not at all times.

I googled the name and the location but I couldn't find anything related to the city manager, thanks again for that link.

Yes, seems everything around here has 2 prices, we shop the internet too, usually ebay, or specialized online suppliers. Lately we were looking for canopy fittings, and ended up going to a tarp supplier online. After walmart opened, we thought that they were going to be similar to other walmarts we've visited in the past, but this one in T or C is somewhat of a disappointment. We still shop Bullock's Grocery, and I was sad when IGA locked their doors, as we used to buy our cheap thin cut sirloins there, among other value and sale items, IGA much like Bullocks are/were unique grocers. I am glad True Value Hardware has managed to survive, but, I don't see how ALCO is making it. Whenever I become dissatisfied with walmart, which is quite often, I thumb my nose at the giant and shop ALCO and Burkes Outlet to spite them. Big isn't necessarily always better. I like the little guys. And, BTW, ever since walmart opened, the retailer where my wifey works? Is suffering, and she has had her hours cut, she's job hunting right now.

We are not lifelong residents here. I came here because of health problems, and doctors back east (Chicago/Milwaukee) told me to go to a more moderate climate for my final months or years. The weather here has been an improvement for my body. I do not necessarily love it here though, but that is taken into stride and consideration after moving from an over-populated area.

Thanks for the reply, you seem most level headed, showing common sense than some others have on other threads.

Re: Jaime Aguilera

Do understand that all kinds of people have authority and responsibility to take action against Aguilera. But, they're all keeping each others' lies. It's incestuous, and corrupt. Watch their interactions. His newbie is Green. The underhanded shananigans that go on in T or C are mind boggling. And, Green is the voice for the arts and tourism people. Have you noticed debit card transactions for Wal-Mart read "Asbaugh" on your bank statement?

The fact that more and more state and grant monies are coming into T or C DOES raise the opportunity to confront to a new level: the State of New Mexico, and grant agencies.

Some action is now being taken, but T or C has a very long way to go.

NO, ABSOLUTELY NOT. MY BANK STATEMENTS FOR WALMERT PURCHASES READ AS FOLLOWS:

{POS PURCHASE - WAL-MART #4341 WAL-MART #TRUTH OR CON NM}
You're wrong. What else are you wrong about? are you one of those who tried to have Green recalled for no apparent reason? If you are, you are the minority, because only about 300 citizens were on board with the falicy, which equates to only about 5% of the total population of T or C. Who else are these nuts trying to recall/remove from office now? Let me tell you something, you cannot remove people just because you suspect they've done something wrong, there must be proof. So far, the city manager and recently recall attempt Green must have a clean noses, otherwise, people would have unseated both. City officials must have to do something wrong, and it must be proven. Basically, from what I have seen, it is this group of about 300 people who are wasting taxpayer dollars bringing these lawsuits. Not to mention the city attorney's time.
Which "grant Monies" are you speaking of, stimulus package dollars?

I don't think it was 300. The turnout was about 100 to recall and almost 400 to keep Green. I believe more people showed up to vote to keep him than voted in the original election.

Yes, well, the population of T or C is roughly 7,500, and I would hardly call 100, or 300 a majority of residents. I would call it a handfull, or smattering of a movement which should die. These might be the very same obstructioists who tried to kill the Walmart opening, some may even be local business owners, who knows what their motives are?

A bit of concern has surfaced in my mind. Who is watching over the City Manager?

Why isn't his past common knowledge? didn't the papers ever get a hold of the info?

T or C could be ripe for missappropriation of funds, and who would know?.

...now about the corruption in gas pricing? Isn't there some sort of law about price fixing/gouging?

I actually don't think it matters if a person is renting. Property owners might be concerned about him though.
truegrit wrote:

Probably because it is not publicized. How are people supposed to know about this person's past dirty little dealings? If it were in newsprint, people might become aware, and ask questions. Since I'm renting, and not a property owner, his past doesn't really matter to me.

Maybe. and yes, there are laws on the books for price fixing, but as lax as most city departments might be, in enforcement of codes, I really don't see much happening to the largest land baron of Sierra County.

Folks, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to observe the corruption in T or C - from gas price fixing to back room deals going on throughout City operations. Why do you think they hired Jaime? He's perfect! Now, they have a "front" (or should we say "back room") man.

For those supporting or seeking justice - forget it - at the local level. Even District Court has "discretion" which means Jaime, Rubin, and other insiders like the Green Machine, including Bryan, all get their way....for now.

And how about gay boy, news editor, Pudilla, getting off after HITTING a woman with his car AND telling the police officer he HAD been drinking alcohol? The Herald Newspaper is completely corrupt, AND is so thick in it that some people believe what they report...HA! They USE their newspaper to promote a strange version of reality - and to protect "certain" people.

Newcomers beware. The sleezy, yet people-pleasing appearing crowd, is only out for one thing: doing it THEIR way (under the radar and capitalizing to make money).

And your way would be prosecuting someone for fleeing from being beat up and driving directly to the police station with the injured person, deciding Jaime is guilty until proven innocent, and perverting the entire foundation of our country. Your take on things works well in a dictatorship.

Wow. Do you think that was necessary? Not really very subtle. You absolutely just lowered yourself to the second grade name-calling and obscenity hurling trolls of this forum with your homophobia. It's repulsive and your argument is nullified because of your demonstrated ignorance.

Nothing good comes from hate.

I've been perusing this forum for a week or so now. Since I'll be moving to TorC soon, I wanted to get a feel for the place, the people.

Here's what I've noticed:
1. The gas prices are somewhat inflated there, but it seems that some people have forgotten that TorC is in the middle of nowhere, and that it might cost a considerable amount more to ship gas there from whatever refinery it comes from. And besides, even if there is some sort of price-fixing, or monopolization, going on, it's not a big drive to Elephant Butte.

Do people really think that TorC is the only place where business moguls manipulate prices and throttle the competition, so that their profit margins soar? Have you read the news lately? Looked at the profit margins of all the major oil companies the last few years? Kept up with what has been happening on Wall Street? Have you ever heard of Microsoft or Bill Gates?

2. Concerning the possibility of corruption in the TorC government: welcome to small-town America. Well actually, welcome to American in general. Again, have you not read any of the news the last few years about our wonderful representatives in DC? The deals and bribes with the lobbyists - who represent all the major corporations - the incessant pocket lining, the double-talk, bi-partisan log-jams, the ever-increasing taxes despite little or no increase in services. Corruption? It's the American way.(Well really, it's the human way).

3. Concerning all the conspiracy theorists, haters, and bad-mouthers on here who talk about TorC as if it is the end of the line, the repository of all that is burned-out and twisted. You guys sound like a broken record I've heard a thousand times before. You really need to get out more - hmm, maybe go somewhere like ABQ or PHX or any other urban area, especially on the east coast - and then compare notes with us about how shady and crappy TorC is compared to those places.

I'm not saying there aren't shady, unstable or questionable elements in TorC; but where in the USA are there not such elements? Perhaps a multi-million dollar gated community somewhere. But I shiver to think of the artificial excuse for life that goes on at such places.

Summary: some people have way too much time and acridity on their hands. Okay, if you are entertaining yourself via this forum and negative rants, that's fine. But maybe it would be healthy to get another hobby also. You could volunteer in some local capacity, in an effort to improve the community you live in, rather than whining about it all day.

Of course, you can always move away from the hellishness of TorC, and go to whatever utopia you think there is elsewhere on the planet.

Just a suggestion.

Eh, your vitriolic response is no surprise at all. I haven't moved yet, and the more I read here on this lovely forum, the less I want to be there.

Sounds like it would be like moving to a graveyard right next to a mental ward for elementary school children.

The only thing I can't figure is why you people, whoever the hell you are, would want to make your town look so ridiculous by incessantly spewing such crap on the internet for the whole world to see? You might as well put a gun on your mouth and pull the trigger,(figuratively, of course).

As a frequent visitor, I've stayed for several weeks a year in TorC/EB for 10 years now. I keep asking people this question and no one seems to have an answer.
WHY, WHY, WHY are the wages so low in Sierra County, yet the cost of living is so high? SOMEONE is keeping all that money!
The state I live in has high income taxes and property taxes, but there is no sales tax on clothing, food or services. The wages more than compensate. A cop here makes $40K to $50K a year. An office manager starts at least $35K. But the weather sucks.
The tax you people call "gross receipts" is nothing more than highway robbery. Are you kidding me? Tax on the commission you pay to sell your house? There is so much corruption there it's criminal. Yet, they only pay their police officers 10 bucks an hour? I can go to McDonalds in other states and make that much! Groceries, gas, supplies, and everything you need to live are much higher in TorC and EB. I don't get it. How can the people who work there afford it? Talk about keeping your people oppressed! Then they run to the government for assistance! Is that why there are so many poor people? It really is like Mexico...the rich and the poor. Other than incredible views and beautiful weather, not much else enchanting about it. Has a very sinister feel to it, esp. in TorC. I think that's why the cops are so brutal there. Give people tickets for going 2 mph over the limit, license plate lights, other petty crap. Way too many cops for such a small population. Last time I was there, I counted 3 squad cars in a 4 block area. Have less of them and pay them more, and maybe they won't be such jerks to tourists. Or maybe that's how they afford to live there! Instead of paying a decent living wage, just entrap drivers and squeeze $$ out of them! Will someone, please explain it to me!

But our hot mineral springs are divine and you can take a dip for $3 to $25! There are all kinds of bathhouses and I love them all. Thanks for your posting. I am looking to head down that way after the first of the year from MN/IA area. Having visited the town a couple times over the past 5 years I agree with your description and look forward to having an extended stay in the eclectic and interesting community.
