We are retired and possibly looking to relocate there. We are nterested in knowing what it costs to live in TorC area, ie. housing costs for renting or buying, utilities, and real estate taxes. Also, is high speed internet service available? Is the town's water system a problem? We saw that annual rainfall is around 10" a year. If you live out of the city limits, is it difficult to find water and how far down do you have to drill to reach it? Thanks for any useful information that you have.

Depends on what you want. You can rent a crusty old trailer for as cheap as $250 a month or you can rent a nice little house for about $500-$650. If you want to buy you can spend anywhere from $75,000 for a trailer on a little lot or $500,000 for a nice big house by the lake. Not sure about the water. Im in Elephant Butte on a well and it seems to work great. I dont live in town and I get DSL from windstream so I dont think thats a problem.

For the available resources, T or C is not your best choice. Look at Silver City for yoga, a mature, new age group, several open religious groups such as Friends, Universalists, Unitarians, Islam Sacred Dance Group, Buddhist practices.

T or C is just not living what it potential could be. The water in downtown is a serious problem. Poor infrastructure, no level building because T or C was built on a marsh, and the hot water is only a few feet below surface (shallow aquifer - and known to be contaminated from a 1960s petro spill).

Sid Bryan, Sea Properties started buying up most of downtown, and sells properties all around town. Real estate prices have quadrupled since Sid came to town - distinctly gay, art bias, bright Palm Springs colors despite what other people want.

Drilling outside of T or C isn't usually a problem. The whole area sits on the Rio Grande aquifer.

What T or C HAS that Silver, Hillsboro, Las Cruces, Deming, Mimbres and surrounding don't have is A LOT of misguided, psychotic, immoral people - some in business, and many connected with the arts groups, so-called spa businesses and "in-group" social scene. If you're moving to find "community", "yoga", "more mature souls", try Silver, not TRC. You'll be sorry you bought into T or C. Most people who "invest", pull out within five years because the "locals" have some pretty poor habits. Lots of people on drugs, alcohol. Viet Nam Vets, broken new age souls.

Thanks for the input on both responses. Your response, Notyoga, is the type of information that is lacking but is most important. T or C doesn't seem to be the place we are looking for. Will look at Silver City though.

And how 'bout T or C's only way to seemingly make money: raise the utility rates! They're way off compared to surrounding small towns. The streets are poor, cops are corrupt, and small cliques run everything.

Recently, T or C passed another tax hike for some really stupid cause: Spaceport America - a largely Las Cruces and Alamogordo based project that will mostly utilize government and private contract aeronautical tests, not the commercial space rides promoted to the public. Now T or C's tax rate is 7.50%, higher than every surrounding town!

Every decade or so, T or C looks like a town that will "come of age", but something corrupt happens to keep it in its own hell-hole again and again.

I live in T or C and love it. I'm not an investor, psychotic, misguided or immoral. T or C, like so much of the southwest, has it's share of walking wounded. Perhaps less than Santa Fe. But I moved here and found great friends and a supportive circle. However, I didn't come looking for a town to heal me or the "next big thing".

It's a great place to be creative and pursue your own endeavors because there is not a whole lot of things going on. Unless you make it so.

It's also the kinda place where you have front row seats to funny small town strangeness. Unfortunately this forum has come the represent the worst of our small town strangeness. If you really wanted to get a feel for it you have to visit. People love it or hate it here and that's how it goes.

Regarding water- I live downtown and have not had a lick of trouble with water. Well, the exception being a leaky roof and I fixed that. But our hot mineral springs are divine and you can take a dip for $3 to $25! There are all kinds of bathhouses and I love them all. The water is actually the main attraction here, IMHO, and then the incredible vistas. And then the turkey vultures. But I prattle on.

Some folks complain about utilities, but they are literally half the cost of the city I moved here from.

Come see for yourself. Maybe it's for you, maybe it isn't.

I love it here. T or C is, without doubt, one of the greatest places I've lived or visited. It's nearly impossible for me to imagine anyone not liking it, but even more perplexing to figure out why the two or three who don't like it (and continuously post here under different names) stick around. The best I can figure is that they thrive on discord and will attempt to sow it wherever they live. The beauty of T or C is that nearly the entire town laughs at their antics just as though they were silly children. Of course the 10k they cost the city wasn't all that funny, but nobody is hateful toward them. People are good hearted in T or C.

You forgot we have more child molesters here per capita than any other city in NM. And that the corrupt police force lets us roam as we please

Yoga4me,
It may look like the information about T or C vs Silver City is objective, but if you look a bit closer, you'll see it isn't. There is no "in crowd" that excludes new-comers. People who feel excluded typically have alienated themselves with attitudes which we can see reflected in some of these posts. That said, Silver City and T or C are both wonderful places. You'd be wise to check them both out personally rather than rely on potentially biased and/or blatantly false information you receive here. I hope you find your ideal place.

It seems like the C.A.V.E. people have attained access to a computer!(C.A.V.E. Citizens Against Vertually Everything.) TorC is a fine place to be. Especially in this time in history. Mayberry-maybe!
Wonderful-absolutely...
If you don't come it will be your loss. Life doesn't get much better. Climate, amenities, social circles (choice of), culture, recreation, and most of all-freedom of choice. Something that is disappearing quick elsewhere. Enjoy.

And yet the rants and raves on these forums have absolutely no relation to real life.

Still happy.

Art, what a great acronym!
Glad2BNTrC, for most of us... unfortunately, rants and raves are real life to a few. Some say they have no life, but the sad fact is that their life IS what they see and live -- ranting and raving, unhappy and so terribly frustrated. Hopefully they'll work through it this life and not die in that state of mind. Whether one believes in reincarnation or heaven/hell, not coming out of that ranting/raving view of life is a terrible way to live and horrible to carry to the end of one's life. They're young though, so there's time for them to figure it out.
It's nice see sane, optimistic, and happy people posting and countering their nonsense. Thanks.

Alamogordos tax rate is also 7.5% and we will see none of the spaceport monies. We voted NO to the spaceport here in Alamo as it is based across the mountain range from us and we all thought it stupid to put monies into something we will see no revenues from.

Stupid is right. People in T or C are so caught up in the swell to please their friends, and appear as if something "big" is about to happen to the town that they had no understanding of how a future tax would impact economics in the town. Ever seen a tax repealed after its "use" was gained?

Spacepork was/is just that. T or Cers really don't have a clue. They've wasted so much money using grants and taxes it's rediculous - and still look at the place! No real planning - all special interest, and short-lived. Streets - very poor! Even a one inch rain floods the place. Utilities are some of the highest around. Ever watch the trash detail? They pick up trash EVERY day downtown, including Sundays and holidays. Getting paid time-and-a-half for driving downtown to look inside mostly empty trash dumpsters, I guess, may be worth getting out of bed for to be paid nearly $30. an hour.

Nobody's monitoring ANY of these people! The City Manager's job has the auhority, but remember T or C didn't even review his background very closely before taking this job - he was convicted of bribery in CA!
