That is great that someone that age was able to get a position like that in a school district, but lets not forget that many youth in that age range does change and alot! Im not saying that she is not mature but there are many young people in that age range that are mature. She has not finished her college degree. How can she get that position without a degree when the school districts are so engaging in that subject. They are strict in that matter and they demand alot more because its education we are talking about.
I just dont see a balance.

With all due respect, a degree is not a prerequisite for placement on a school board. If you will survey current board members in all area school districts, you will find that approximately 60% do not have college degrees. Also, take a look at City Council and County Commissioners. I, for one, am very very proud of the fact that this 18 year old has been named to the board. Who on that board would have more recent experience with the school district, especially as an insider. This former student has the opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of the students in that district. You know, we tell our students to work hard, to study hard, and to be contributing members of society. This young lady has done this. Besides, she is a Political Science major. What better experience and education could she acquire than serving on a Board of Trustees. Let's not practice reverse age discrimination. To this new board member: I am very proud of you. Please continue to be an inspiration to all of our students. -- An educator

The school board at SISD is a joke. There is only one reason they hired her and that is to use her as a puppet. They are just going to pull the strings to do their bidding. What experience does she really have? None. She is a political science major, she attended SISD, she attends UTEP, so what. There are better qualified people out there than her. I have been living in El Paso for the past six years, and the way things are run in this city compared to other cities,WHAT A JOKE! Makes me wonder about the rest of the board, very poor decision on their part. That explains many troubling things about the school district eg, students not learning basic English, math, writing and not to mention hiring teachers who do not know basic English, math, and writing. My tax money is being flushed down the drain, and paying the salaries of individuals with poor judgment.

She sounds like a wonderful young lady. Much like many of the kids I know and mentor in business. How can she help exactly? Your quote:"Besides, she is a Political Scienc major?" What is that all about? Why do we have to concern ourselves in SISD with advancing the career of one person in her political aspirations? SISD has monumental challenges on the horizen requiring maturity and experience. What can a political science major, who is barely out of high school, do about rising taxes, increasing budgets, and extraordinary demands of a growing population? What sense is there to any of this? Why do people keep saying silly things like "she'll make a difference? What difference? She's going to do exactly what she's told to do. This is not a venue for individualism or achievements. This is apparently a resume-builder. It's clear to many of us who have discussed it that this appointment is a favor of some sort to give this young lady a leg up in her chosen field of endeavor. It worries us as property owners that we're involved in some sort of lab testing. Why don't we be fair to our whole community of kids? Why don't we just appoint a whole board of teenagers and call them SISD's junior board of trustees? I can nominate five or ten Ms Loyas without hesitation.

Everyone in the state of Texas is laughing about the board's criteria at selecting a board member... read the one about the 7 yr old asking to be a SISD board member because the position comes for a happy meal -
the issue is not whether she is a wonderful young lady or not, nor whether good for her or not the issue here is the best interest of the students - It seems the board decided to choose her as a political move, not thinking about the best interest of the students... really embarrasing school board - hope next year all of them get replaced with more responsible, stable and honest people

I graduated from Americas High School, along with Miss Tanya Loya. Many of you may have doubts and may question the potential of Ms. Loya, but to ease your doubts, I would like to say that at her tender age she is an extraordinary young lady! She is a very dedicated and hard worker. She will serve as a voice for our Socorro Independent School District and she will do an outstanding job!

Well, I'm glad to hear that she wasn't kicked off of student council for cheating. She was just on the news saying it was a "misunderstanding" between her and a teacher...but she was still kicked off of student council!

I'm sure both of you would do a great job at any McDonalds, along with the rest of the SISD Board

You're wrong. We don't have questions about her potential. She probably has great potential. Most kids have great potential. We have problems with the choice. There were several people interested in that position with far more expertise than she has. This is not school. You don't get it! We don't NEED a voice for SISD! That's ridiculous. We're not sending her somewhere to represent us. She's sitting on our own board. Everyone on that board represents SISD. It doesn't matter what you think. It only matters what we in the district think...our children...our taxes.

An amazing thing has occurred for once an individual of her caliber has been recognized for her insight and not her political connections. Granted she is very young, however, that should not be an impeding manner, after all I too at a very young age made a conscious decision to fight for my country, yet nobody opposed when I went to fight at the tender age of 18. So how is this any different? Are we then to say that an individual can risk his/her life at such a young age but is not qualified to represent the best interest of their community? I whole-heartedly believe in her capacity. She is one of the leading components that will turn this city around. Good Job Tanya make us all proud!

Congratulations to a very intelligent young lady! There is no doubt a rising star given all of her accomplishments at such a young age!

However, as for the board members that approved this appointment - QUE IDIOTAS! Demonstration of poor judgement on this appointment validates they have no clue on what it takes to run a school district.

This is not a student council position and shame on the board for trying to be cute with appointing a young person to a position that requires experience and maturity - remember this board is responsible for millions and millions of tax payer funds. How can a young person contribute without any business experience?

Perhaps an internship would be a better approach. To have someone with zero experience attempt to contribute over the next few months is nothing more than an exercise in futility.

This board has again demonstrated very poor judgement. Enough is enough. This is no different than allowing a junkie to manage a pharmacy.

I am very much in favor of the state taking over!

Oh, I long for the days when Mr. Sybert was superintendent. Teachers could teach, students wanted to learn, parents wanted an education for their kids, and all was right with the world.

I agree with Dora Oaxaca (parent in the article and maybe a former student of mine from SHS). I'm glad the board selected a young, former student. Who better to know the needs of the students which is what the business of the board should be.

I remember another student at SHS who was bright and outgoing. I knew she would go far. I thought she'd be an astronaut one day, but instead she decided to come home and serve in the district where she grew up--thanks, Karen!!

There are plenty of "experts" in the district whose job it is to advise the board on things like the budget. Common sense and a heart for kids are what the board members need to make the decisions ahead. Let her prove herself!
