Daily lessons in SPANISH, what is wrong with this picture. To bad ENGLISH isn't taught. We wonder why America is slowly becoming a third world country.
I wonder how much local tax dollars of the diverted 12% from Thomason Hospital it is costing the local tax payer. You can rest assured that this so called Medical Center will bleed the El Paso tax payer since the so called progressives (liberals) in this town tax us to death. |

Looks like you could use the English lessons...

You idiot, most of these people are not from El Paso and do not have any knowledge in Spanish. THEREFORE, dimwit, they must get their feet wet in order to understand their patient sufficiently enough to provide care.
The medical center is a staple of any large city, dallas, houston, san antonio, Los Angeles, Miami - the list goes on and on. It creates jobs, brings the best and brightest from out of town here, keeps the brightest (maybe not in this class) from El Paso here and improves healthcare for the city which has the 2nd worst doctor to patient ratio in the country! Before you go off and talk about things you don't know about, research the issues and facts before you go open your stupid mouth making claims about healthcare being for 'bleeding hearts'- its an issue for all of us. On another note, these students aren't the best has to offer though - by a long shot. Without this school and personal connections (ie. your dad being a doctor friend with most of the faculty, working for a doctor on the admissions committee), they wouldn't be here. UTEP has way better students than this, hopefully next year, the school will target them and not the leftovers the other schools didn't want. Dr. Hochuli GOP Donor since 1978 |

Spanish lessons for all students will benefit everyone. Before saying these students are leftovers lets give everyone a chance to prove themselves. Lets not judge them immediately. As for Texas Tech targeting on UTEP for students, you would think they would have looked at local students first, but, no surprise that Texas Tech "competes" with UTEP. Texas Tech is "LUBBOCK". UTEP should have been on the ball and started the medical school long before. UTEP "IS" El Paso. But - history has proven to us that UTEP and the City of El Paso keep making the wrong decisions or no decisions at all to "run" towards the future. El Paso lost the medical school to Lubbock and the pharmaceutical school.
Texas Tech (Lubbock) works hand in hand with Thomason Hospital (El Paso). And "WE" pay the taxes to keep this going! Ironic isn't it? |

I know they are leftovers because I interviewed some of them at the institution where I practice. These students had no choices - ask them. Maybe 1 matched to another medical school... maybe. Good kids, but being a good person doesn't mean you are mentally fit or capable to be a physician. We'll see in 4 years, when the El Paso students are only 2. UTEP has tons better kids than these - these are not the cream of the crop.
El Paso never lost the med school to anyone, Texas Tech is an already proven entity in medicine and in professional education. If El Paso had decided to go with a UT Health Science Center at El Paso theme, it would have taken much longer, but since Tech was the proverbial 'co-signer', things were done much faster and easier (if you can say that). Without Tech ascribing its name to the school, you could have bet that the money that would've gone to build the El Paso school would have gone to rebuild UTMB after Ike. Thank Tech, don't wag your finger at them. |

Woah! Chill out, Doc! Get over yourself for a minute. Besides, someone just handed you your head a couple of posts before mine. It is clear to all that you have no "patience." You must also not have many "patients;" seeing that you have so much time for posting. I see you say you donate to the GOP. Don't worry, in a few weeks the Anointed One will take over your business and you will punch a clock for minimum wage. Enjoy! |

Dr. Hochuli, I would like to thank you for your interest in my fellow classmates, the city of El Paso, and me. However, I would also ask that you allow us the opportunity to begin the first day of class before assuming that we are "less deserving".
Furthermore, because you had the opportunity to interview some of my classmates does not mean that you know them, nor what they are capable of. Many of us had choices, we chose El Paso because we believe in this faculty and this program. Again, I thank you for your interest and wish you continued success in the future. God Bless, Class of 2013 |

Does anyone know how many students were accepted from NM (if any)?

1 Such prose and fluidity, I like that. If I may ask, are you from out of El Paso? If so, how many of your friends that were deserving didn't get in to medical school? I knew some when I went to school - great MCAT, grades - but no acceptances. The students chosen from El Paso's university, UTEP, are not the best from their own class. Those are the students I refer to as being 'not the cream of the crop'. Those that came from out of El Paso - ARE the cream of the crop. Thats why they threw a full-ride your way! You all are amazing, as are a select few that are from UTEP. I apologize for being so crass, but there are some in your class from El Paso who didn't get in based on merit. Trust me on this young man/woman, the more you find out about these students, the more you'll resent the fact that your deserving friends didn't get in yet these people with connections to the EP faculty did. More often than not, those that don't belong in med school will be weeded out. In your case, expect that these few will be the ones I'm referring to. Ask them their MCATs, GPAs.. then ask if they knew anybody from the faculty/admissions committee BEFORE they got into med school. The answer will enlighten you to whom I speak of. Ask them if they had any other offers - they didn't. I know for a fact that 4 of the El Paso students didn't even get an invite to my institution. The institution where I work at can't accept everyone, but I pushed to get some UTEP kids in that were amazing. They really were, but then it angers me to see these undeserving kids from El Paso with personal connections that got in via under the table deals AND/OR 'family' favors. Godspeed future doc - stay humble and stay thirsty for knowledge. |

Dr. Hochuli,
Misunderstandings are inevitable, particularly when conversations are confined to a box. Therefore, allow me to share in the blame for that misunderstanding. I do see the point you make. I am, in fact, not from El Paso and I will not speak on behalf of anyone who is with the hope that they will return the same respect when I should need to speak for myself. Likewise, I am not a soothsayer and have no desire to change professions now. I can only hope that ALL of us will rise to the occasion when called upon to do so. And I will do all I can to help those who should need it along the way. This is my family now and, until my judgment convinces me otherwise, I will stand by them. Always, humble and thirsty. |

1 Considering the rather harsh words of your initial foray on this topic, this seems to be very unusual advice. What is this, do as I say?" |

To Dr. Hochuli,
Actually, I feel so good about not going to your institution and be one of your students. I'm really wondering how you could get into medical school at the very beginning. Did you get in because of some connections? Maybe you're smart (I'm doubt about that), but you just don't deserve being a doctor because you're so mean, and arrogant. Oh well, good luck with whatever you're up to. By the way, good luck to your institution, too. I cannot imagine how can a person like you pick the best possible students for your institution. Maybe we're gonna have more doctors like you. So bad!!! |

Let me say--I do agree with the posts that say that the new medical school has NOT!!! brought in the cream of the crop and gave postions to ENTITLED students (some not all--whether it be race, or who they know). I guarantee that this school will make it possible, no matter what these students do or don't do--to make the school and the donors and El Paso look good-have everyone pass, succeed and become the doctors that each one wants to be. I do agree that there is entitlement here and our best applicants, students etc... have not been given a fair opportunity here. PS--This is why our country is going down the toilet.
