As a child I attended Zavala Elementary. It was 98% hispanic then and many students spoke little english. In 1956, I was the Captain of the Patrol Boys (crossing Guards). I had the good fortune to have very good teachers such as Mr. Ralph Iturralde who provided me with an excellant role model and encouraged me in many ways. I still have many wonderful memories of those days including childhood crushes (Jenny Cortez). I carved our initials on a tree outside the school. I lived on Finley St. I now live in Michigan and visit El Paso whenever I can. I always drive by the school. Although far removed by the years, it brings saddness to me to learn that this school is being considered for closure.
