Bus ordinance: Don't legislate common courtesy

City Council really screwed this decision up. You cannot legislate kindness, discipline, morality, or courtesy from the bench of government. Big brother and big government is already too involved in every aspect of our lives. Next thing they will be telling us we can go to the bathroom only between the hours of 1-2am in the morning. Big government has failed too deliver too many times. Big government mismanages numerous programs on a national level. The more big government gets involved in our lives, the worse things get. Instead of tackling common sense matters, City Council should be working on reducing taxes and traffic congestion which is worsening with each passing minute in El Paso. They should be getting rid of the storm drain illegal tax. They should be resolving the badly needed Airway extension. They should be working on how to invest in solar power, wind power, windmill turbine electricity and other technologies to reduce our thirst on foriegn oil. Gee, maybe they can offer tax breaks to those of us who buy solar technology and buy fuel efficient hybrid cars. Now that would be a worthwhile venture to prusue instead of making people get up for elderly and disabled individuals! They should be working on an regional light rail system connecting major traffic arteries and the cities of Juarez, Las Cruses, El Paso, Santa Teresa, Fabens, Clint, San Elizario, and Anthony. Maybe they form a joint venture with regioanl governments to secure federal funding for a regional light rail system so they could reduce the strain on our overcrowded highways and streets and save thousands of barrels of oil in the process? Maybe they coluld work on reducing city government and the city's humongous budget? Maybe they could work on having city council meetings during hours when most of us do not work? Apparently our City Council does not have enough valid projects to work on, Maybe we need a new city council?

um a LOT of people lack common courtesy.. and simple education and manners. i dont mean book smarts i mean the kind of education to just behave yourself properly in public.
It shows that many people have no idea how to behave - such as giving a seat to an old lady. To bad we have to be told to do so, instead of remembering what our parents taught us but there are a lot of rude people out there in the world.

Leave it to the pendejos at city hall to come up with these pendejadas. Because really, how can this be enforced if everyone pays to ride the bus. And don't the disabled and handicapped get specials buses anyways.
Can the regular Joe now take a ride on those "special" buses now and sit side by side with the diabled Joe. Outrageous BUNCH OF PENDEJOS. There is no way someone should be able to tell another person let me have you seat when the all pay. How about we lower the bus rates and everybody gets the old fart(pedo) rate and then maybe people will move and give up their seats then? Get rid of that monkey council and let Joyce run the show, that'll save taxpayers about 1 million on not having those pendejos and their staff on the payroll. |

It is obvious that the people against this legislation do not ride the bus. All busses have an area by the door and where a walker or wheelchair can fit because the seats fold up or so that people who who have vision or hearing limitations can be advised by the driver that they have reached their stops
I have witnessed incidents in which people have refused to reliquish those seats to the handicapped or elderly and they were mostly middle aged people with children who were undisciplined. More courtesy is shown by the gang members and homeless than by people who think they should not have to move for anyone. When the handicapped person is near the door the driver can assist them off and on the bus safely but in at least one incident the mother and child in those seats refused to move and made such a fuss that the driver could not move the bus and delayed many people in making their connection to their transfers. It is a sad commentary on El Paso that this sort of ordinance has to be passed but I have experienced more rudeness and arrogance here than at any place I have ever lived which is many around the world. Whether it is refusing a seat to the elderly or disabled or shoving in line at stores or even getting in the express line with a cart full of stuff and pretending you cannot read the "15 or less sign" or even tossing your garbage and trash out the car window on the road or in a parking lot. El Paso is the rudest place in the world. |

Apparently there are people out there who aren't so considerate as yourself. While you may be delayed if the police are called in such a situation, such delay doesn't compare to the wait for the elderly or disabled person who has to wait for the next bus to come without such ordinance. Use common sense as well as common courtesy.

It seems to me that a lot of you missed the part that says the areas are designated for the elderly and disabled. It's not just about showing some common courtesy. And skeptic you are pretty much right about El Paso people, I am born and raised in El Paso and I love my city but there are way too many rude jackas**s here.
The ordinance provides an enforcement mechanism for those jacks who would disregard the designated areas. Before, although there was a designated area, there was no consequence for ignoring it. Now it is the equivalent of paying a fine for parking in a handicapped space. Without the ticket, people would park in those spaces too. Get used to it and deal with it. Have some perspective and some empathy. They have far more to contend with than your minor inconvenience.
And there is your prime example(el rastillo)about not only not having common courtesy but also ignorant.
People still ride the bus.

I want to know what incident started this BS because i ride the bus 2 or 3 times a week and the front seats are usually (80% of the time) empty for those oldsters. I think some old non tax paying pedo from juarez started this whole mess. Probably on his way to get his free lonestar and WIC or to Thomason.
I swear this city does more for the nonTAXPAYERs than it does for good honest hard working taxpayers. People should start moving to Sunland Park or Horizon, get out of HELL PASO |

Its the youth of today for them it's all about me,me,me. Who cares about everybody else. I've ridden the bus before and I've witnessed altercations between passengers in regards to passengers not giving up their seat. Once these two young females were sitting in the front seats and they refused to give up their seats leaving an elderly individual to considerately give up his. A verbal altercation ensued afterwards. There are a lot of inconsiderate youths riding the bus!
