I was there not long ago. Man, I never thought a major city in the USA could suck so hard. It was shocking.
I think every American should visit El Paso. I couldn't believe how stagnant it was- a city going nowhere and doing nothing. If that place won't motivate you to make something out of your life, nothing will. Why are people still there? |

Judged: 1 Military madness I suppose. I've been here a year and a half and the only problem I encounter is finding employment - I'm limited to base positions. At first, being here was exciting because it was so different from any place we'd been. It isn't bad, while at the same time, it isn't great (to me) In every corner of this nation, there is rudeness so there can't be any emphasis placed on any of El Paso's people - I find that when you smile, the world smiles back. Period. Overall, there is more pleasantness here than in the North. My Mom, my sons and my sister have visited, each had an enjoyable stay and some are returning (for the 3rd time). As circumstances are, I don't have to work, so remaining here is not a problem, however, I would have to move along if I were dependent on employment to survive. I do expect the education of my 3 kids will suffer a small setback once we leave here and that's my greatest concern at the moment. We're likely leaving by next year but I will always be interested in what's happening in the area as it grows and develops to accomodate the astonishing number of troops/families expected to arrive. |
Ah yes- Fort Bliss. I tell ya, if the military ever chose to leave EP, that town would become Third World overnight. It's just a welfare city. Yes, the people are nice. That's about all I could say positive about the place. Honestly. I think that place is like quicksand. People get stuck there, and the more they try to get out, the harder it sucks them in. I've seen it happen. Well, good luck to you. Wish you much success in leaving. |

The anticipated growth and the recent development in the area is nothing short of astonishing.
The presence of Military families is the sole contributor to the much needed diversity among the population. I agree with your position on the withdrawal of the Military. Frightening thought, isn't it? I couldn't stay, even if I were fluent in Spanish. I long for 4 Seasons...beaches...seafood... and more GREEN! Happy Spring! |

Judged: 2 1 1 Yeah, I read that the population is growing by 10k a year! Some military, but mostly new borns(and some of those are just illegals running into the US to give thie kids citizenship to pony up to the public troff of welfare dollars). So, people are poor and there is no real economy to speak of...so what do they do? Have a bunch of babies. WTF???????!!! Well, Travolta, I'm glad you will one day leave El Paso. You have chosen LIFE, and I applaud you for it. Days before you leave, have a big party. I did! And let us know- we'll have a party here for you in your honor. |

Judged: 1 1 1 You area racist and a pig. Can't accept anything that is different can you. El Paso has been around for a long time; has had many good years. The last ten have been challenging but El Paso will surprise most Texans in the next ten years as we grow and boom times are coming. You assertion we have so many births from Mexico is no anomaly. It is a Texas and Federal challenge; not just El Paso. You are a zero supremacist. You can only look at the world through your rose colored eyeballs. You will see the error of your way soon. |

Judged: 2 1 1 Entreprenuer Magazine lists El Paso as one of the top places for business activity and development. Fortune and Forbes magzines have recognized what is going on in the region, in particular El Paso. One of the top Real Estate developers in the nation is helping in redevelop downtown El Paso and bring new industry. He now makes El Paso his home and has set up three companies that will develop the real estate market-residential and commercial. El Paso residential valuations currently average $138,000 and according to most data reports show valuations reaching $178,000 by the end of 2007. That pust us ahead of most Texas communities and on par with the big cities! El Paso is on the move. Chicos Tacos? They may go regioinal; even Arlington! |

Judged: 1 1 1 Just a little fact- El Paso county has amongst the lowest wages in Texas. AND more people move away from El Paso county than any other in Texas. As for all the big talk of things one day booming in El Paso- it's just talk. They've been saying it for years. And the sad part about it is that the exploding population is due to the military (so it's government money), or the rapid birth rate. Nothing whatsoever to do with working people coming there for private business purposes. That means all the rising prices are simply artificialy inflated. In other words, people are going to need better paying jobs to afford the higher costs- and there aren't any. It is going to be a serious problem. Bottom line- if El Paso doesn't do something to lure Big Business there, you are going to have a disaster on your hands. Kind of like it is NOW, only worse. And if crying to the federal government for subsidized bail-out is Plan A (which it already is), the city better figure on a stronger Plan B. They'll never do it. What a Going Nowhere city... |

Judged: 1 The expansion and development is (obviously) to accomodate the increase of troops and their families. What they are NOT "planning for" is... the number of people that will come, fully prepared and intending to live/work here, only to discover that their skills and education cannot be utilized in a SPANISH SPEAKING community ...and then, they will LEAVE. All those empty houses will become nothing but adequate shelter for the homeless and secret nooks for druggies. Nothing wrong with your hopes and visions - I just see things a little differently, that's all. I'm having difficulty finding just ONE person that actually says "they like it here..." Sadly, it's a contributor to the breakdown of families - while a soldier might be required to remain here, the wife/kids say....ADIOS! |
|
Judged: 1 1 You said it better than I could. Once people in the military "do thier time", it's Adios El Paso. Even if they wanted to stay (and I never met one that did), what businesses exist there to utilize thier talents and pays enough to support thier families? They aren't there. Boy, El Paso is one day going to wake up to a harsh reality...and a very rude awakening. I feel badly for these deluded souls who actually think EP is becoming progressive, when in reality, they are cattle being fed for a financial slaughter. |

Judged: 2 2 1 The Pentagon has approved the Headquaters of the Future Combatitive Systems to be located here in El Paso. That will translate into over 4,000 engineering, high tech jobs with the development of a high tech park which will also see the arrival of two military defense contractors. All future weaponry for the Armed Forces will be developed here in the region for the next fifty years. ADP has set up a regional office with more than 2,000 jobs and more coming. They have told everyone this is a great place to do business. Our new Medical School, the first in the USA in over 25 years, will bring a new Children's Hospital, two pharmacuetical companies coming doing research, and a Medical Centers of the Americas complex to rival any exisiting center. This is the largest border community in the world with manufacturing capabilities that rival even the DFW area. Check out the USA Chamber website. It highlights what is going here. It is for real! English is the language spoken by most residents who live here. Many speak Spanish because they are recent arrivals or are from Mexico where Spanish is the national language. Bilingual capabilites rank El Paso as tops in that ability which is fueling many companies to locate here. Many military retire here. We have Colonels, Generals, and many other ranks who stay and help make a differnce. The MWR on Post is a cooperative of military and locals. There is a true partnership. Ft. Bliss will become the premier Army base. El Paso ranks second in international trade and that is what is pushing the private sector. It has for many years. Our biggest industry became a casualty, the garment industry, when the NAFTA was implemented. That occured in the mid 90's and contributed to the exodus of many. But El Paso perservered and will regain its position as a "Center" for many things. Yes, Renegade snd Travolta are just two minions who are to be ignored and pitied. Please ignore them. |
